  • This is just a dupe of this:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/78875

  • Not really a deal.. for $5 more, you can get the better "My Passport" drive from Amazon.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006Y5UV4A/

    • +2

For $5 less, I'd rather have local warranty. How much better is a Passport?

      • The Passport line has back up software and generally has a sleeker form factor. Other than that, no difference. Both lines from JB come with a local, 3 year warranty.

        • Well, I'm not into waiting an extra 2 weeks for delivery. Form factor doesn't affect performance. The backup software I will never use (I have 2 passports, never used it).

  • *Based on transfer rates as high as 5 Gb/s with USB 3.0 vs. 480 mb/s with USB 2.0. Performance may vary based on user's hardware and system configuration.

LOL you'll be getting about 30mb/s tops.

Also it's probably a fine deal as it is, though it does appear to be the AC adapter version. I have no doubt that with a little extra searching, or just waiting a week or two, you'd be able to get the same size storage, same brand but without external power required. I picked up the 1.5TB version for $150 not too long ago, and the same chunky +AC adapter one was 1.5TB for $99. Aus post had the 2TB passive one for $99 a few months ago as well I think.

    Ohh it seems they still have mine :D http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XM2196/seagate-expansion-por… (1.5TB - $149
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XM2189/seagate-go-flex-1-5tb… (1.5TB - $99)
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XM1405/seagate-expansion-2tb… (2TB - $139)
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XH9888/seagate-expansion-2tb… (2TB USB 2.0 - $109)

    So that's just one site

I thought not needing a power adapter to be a somewhat trivial feature, but now that I have crossed over to owning one, I have to say the convenience of one cable and not trying to find a spare socket to plug the freakin huge adapter into is amazing. The drive itself is much smaller too so makes the potable storage even more portable.

    • This model does not require an external power supply. A "Portable" HDD is one that does not require an external power supply.

    • LOL you'll be getting about 30mb/s tops.

I have the Passport version of this. You are dead right. USB 3.0 is nothing more than a marketing gimmick here, because the speed of that drive is 100% achievable with USB 2.0. You're paying extra for nothing really. It's still restricted by the speed of the drive, not the connection interface.

The Seagate version is a bit faster, but still withing USB 2.0 speeds.

  • I saw this Hitachi Touro Mobile MX3 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive on Groupon for $99 (from $199): http://www.groupon.com.au/deals/national-deal/Hitachi-Touro-… but didn't think it was a real deal (like almost all the stuff there these days) as i did a google search and first page was: http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/product.php?id=400845 inc post its the same price so not really a deal and here for $77 (not sure about post) http://greenboxit.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=9191_554_194… so half price i think not. Amazing to see that they have sold 734 (556 single + 89 2x deal) of these by saying its 50% when it isn't !

    • If you have an MSY near you, the 'Hitachi 2.5" Touro Mobile' is $67 for the 500gb and $89 for the 1TB.

I'm not sure if the Touro Mobile range is normally USB 3.0 but a good deal either way and this may be the same model as you mentioned.

  • OW appears to have this for $98.

Thinking of going into a JB store and seeing if they will beat it http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…
