They're salivating at the mouths because of this product.

      100,000 units already sold out

Just an FYI before you loaded individuals smash the buy button

    https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-vision/apple-vision-pro

When you buy directly from Apple you're asked to use your iPhone or iPad to 3d scan your face so that you can get a better fit (get measured for your Light Seal and head bands.

And for people who need prescription lenses, those are also custom order and your vision pro would come with Zeiss Optical inserts.

You most likely won't be getting this service from Kogan.

    • +5

Yes. Surprised Kogan don’t let you choose the Light Seal sizes

    • +2

Very good protip! Thanks Scrimshaw. I'm not looking to buy one of these, but this would be very handy information for folks interested in the Apple headset.

      • I mean, if you buying something this expensive and you don't do enough research to realize that, it's on them lol.

    • I suspect Apple would include a range of seal types/sizes in the box and the software will recommend a specific set for you after you scan your face. But who knows. Unboxing videos would arrive on youtube in a few days time. Can't wait for those to bring us more clarity.

    • +1

Wonder what else they are doing with that face/head data? Hmmm

    • +7

Interesting. Given this deal is like $1200AUD more expensive than buying from Apple US could be worth considering flying over there to buy it that way lol.

    • yes, very stupid for anyone to buy this from Kogan. It's not supported here yet by Apple

    • "You most likely won't be getting this service from Kogan."

this is what I was thinking to comment after I was done scrolling through the rest of the comments.

if you are serious about this. why would you buy it from kogan of all places instead of apple. and some comments suggest this is actually more expensive than at apple.

      • and some comments suggest this is actually more expensive than at apple.

Of course it is. Kogan is grey importing and reselling, they'll obviously mark it up to profit.

        • I thought it was because of short supply (reported in US) but good to know anyway.

  • +4

Thanks OP bought 17 for my family and friends

    Very expensive intelligence test.

    • +2

your brain = gross wrinkles = bumpy weird = ugly = sad

my brain = smooth = no wrinkles = cute = no think = no sad

  • +8

Will only buy if apple logo sticker is included

    • the unboxing videos are out so you can find out

  • +8

Kogan only making a small-ish profit on these.

    $AUD6349 = $USD4200.

Base model sells for $3499. Assume 8% sales tax = $280. Most resellers are paying at least $150 above full retail (including covering sales tax). Resellers would put another $150 on top of this price to Kogan, so Kogan is buying them for about $4079 and selling them in Australia for $4200. They will eat a fair bit on shipping (boxes are huge). Not an outrageous mark up, really.

    • More surprising is how Kogan managed to get these. I thought Apple only sold these direct to consumer, with such restricted quantities. Did Kogan have a team clicking away from launch to buy them for the company? Wouldn't surprise me given how the company started.

      • +3

There are established buying groups (ie resellers) that Kogan could get them from. Very lucrative business in the US. They basically aggregate sales of items from individual buyers and onsell them to foreign market suppliers like Kogan.

      • ngl wouldn't be surprised if this was the $500 alibaba version. (yea they already cloned it with crappy internals)

pretty sure kogan has sold knock offs before such as apple/samsung earpods and cables etc. usually resulted in a refund.

In what metaverse is this a bargain?

    • "metaverse"

why did you use that as if it's a real word in the dictionary. 😂

edit oh sorry forgot urbandictionary is now the official dictionary.

      • +1

It was tongue in cheek. I’m sorry I had to explain this to you.

        • actually I thought they mentioned meta because they wanted to say "meta makes better vr headsets that are much cheaper".
I use the word meta but not as in the company so it just stands out to me when people say the word metaverse.

to be honest if anyone uses the term "metaverse" as a word I instantly think they are one of those types who "documents" things. you know like "I am recording this video just to document this" and post it on their non existent youtube channel for the future people to see in utopia lol.

    Cost of making this: $634.9

    • +20

      • He charge $2 for labour so $636.9

    • +4

A capitalist, profit seeking company, trying to make a profit.

I am shocked to my core.

    • +1

The price & product is ridiculous to me. But I don't think your point has ever been true for latest tech.

Fellas I knew 20yrs ago would buy and disassemble mad stuff, to find the hardware/chips inside cost WAY more than the total product. Always a loss-leader, waiting for everyone to ride the wave, and the profits finally arrive.

    • +2

With R&D costs there is no way the unit cost is $600 (yet).

    • Yep, and that’s just for the OLED screens.

    • +1

For the physical materials perhaps, but for the thousands of hours of R&D and software development, it certainly isn't an accurate price.

    • Witty.

It's far more advanced than that: 3min long video by Apple Explained Why Apple Vision Pro is so expensive

  • Can I watch Netflix on it?

    • +5

      Not on release.

      Maybe eventually.

      • +4

Yes you can. There’s no app though, so you’ll have to do it through Safari

        • +8

In web browsers, Netflix is max 720p, with low bitrate.

So I guess you could, but it wouldn't look as good as the worst TV or a decent phone.

So while it's technically theoretically possible, the real answer is no, you won't bother watching it in this, as it will suck, so wait until the dedicated app is out.

          • +7

@GandalfTheCheap: Sure, but the commenter’s question was “can I watch Netflix” - not “will I bother to watch Netflix”

          • +5

@GandalfTheCheap: That's not true, is it?

            In Safari, it's 4k. In Chrome, it's 1080p.

            720p for the rest.

            • +1

@Jinster: It's dependant on the OS as well, e.g. Ipad OS safari is limited to 1080p

        • What OS is it? iOS? Will you be able to jailbreak and sideload lol

    • Don't worry iTflix is releasing soon for this.

Heard me out people. Gen 1 of every tech will suck. History tells this again and again. Whoever buy this either has rocks in their heads or asses.

…. silently checked out regrettably with so much guilt..

    • +2

Though this Vision Pro may have better tech in it than the first few generations of Vision Amateur. Like the iPad Pro 2018, it's only this year that iPad Air will finally catch up to it.

  • +10
    • None of the necessary customisation of the lens and face piece, like you get when buying direct from Apple
    • US RRP is around 4200 AUD, not six and a half grand

    Interesting, but not a bargain.

    • +2

US RRP is $3.5k USD, which is about $5.3k AUD. And price in US usually does not include tax.

If you take the iPhone 15 Pro 256gb as an example, it's $1,099 USD and $2,049 AUD, or "86% more moneys".

Applying the same rate, the Vision Pro would cost here $6,525 AUD.
Not sure what's the actual RRP here, and 2-3% off is not a huge bargain, but it's technically a deal I guess? 🤷‍♂️

But I assume the actual discount is not the main reason for this post, but the fact that you can actually get it somewhere at the moment. Not that any sane person should.

    • US RRP = $3499 USD - today is $5300

    • +2

Add 3% foreign currency conversion fee, and 10% GST. It works out pretty close.

But it will lack the customisation (possibly) and there could be some geo-restrictions in its use since it's not released outside of USA.

I will be an early adopter of AVP personally, but I think this is too much risk if I can't hook it up to my Apple account (or something else going wrong).

Also, there was a time Apple released different hardware products in different geopolitical regions due to differing RF laws. I am not sure if that's still the case these days.

  • +13

You guys jest, but the technology in this is phenomenal.

    • -2

      eh

    • The tech is mostly existing stuff, but (as usual) the value is in the Apple design and usability.

I'm definitely interested once the lite version comes out with all the teething problems fixed in a year or two.

      • +4

Which other device can you use your eyes to select a menu option?

PS: I don't buy anything Apple, but the tech is quite impressive.

        • +7

This website has a fetish for bashing Apple, you'd think everyone is rocking a Samsung/Pixel and HP laptops.

          • +1

@tightm8: Other than a Samsung fanboi, most of the upset users probably pick up phones at the supermarket.

          • @tightm8:

This website has a fetish for bashing Apple

Yes it does but it's a loud minority as shown by the number of positive votes Apple deals usually get.

        • +6

Eye tracking has been around for a while, assuming you mean "Which other AR/VR device can you use your eyes to select a menu option?"

          https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/eye-control-basi…

I've had the first gen of these for about 7 years: https://gaming.tobii.com/product/eye-tracker-5/

          • @realist123: Humm, good point. Probably makes a lot of sense for accessibility as well.

Does that eye tracker device work as well as Apple's does in their advertisements?

I'm curious about the usages of this thing now, will have a look on youtube. Thanks!

          • +3

@realist123: Eye tracking in a 3D space is a totally different league. Apple has the patent on this technology.

Again, people can't see past the corny previews on YouTube and appreciate the sheer software and hardware engineering required to make something like this commercially viable.

I'm not a fan boy. I just appreciate good software.

        • +5

"Eye Control AF uses infrared LED's and sensors built into the camera's viewfinder optics to track where you are looking, enabling you to move focus points simply by looking at a new subject in a different part of the frame."

Exists since the 90's. Same tech different usage scenario (focusing the lense vs. selecting the menu).

        • +1

Samsung's Galaxy S 4 had many new features, including Smart Scroll with the eyes (2013).

      • +1

The tech is mostly existing stuff

Why was this downvoted? It's correct. From everything released so far, it's all standard VR headset components:

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Vision_Pro

It's the software, focus on comfort, different use cases, better design, better useability, more AR focus, etc that really sets this apart from other VR headsets in the $5000+ range

    • +1

The technology in an average phone is phenominal.
This would need to be unheard of to warrant the rediculous price. If it turns out to be meta quest 3 beefed up then the ecosysytem better be very good day 1.

    • Lol or just buy a PSVR2 in around march when ivry creates the pc driver.

Apple never innovates on tech they just wait and look at everyone elses failings in an area and then makes good software and use the refined hardware mainly from samsung.

PSVR2 has 90% of the stuff in this for $900 in Aus or around $660 if youre in Japan with the tax free and yes the PSVR2 has HDR

      Save yourself over 5k lol.

Sure I cant be a (profanity) with a battery that dies every 2 hours but id rather a similar experience and 5k in my pocket.

Apple is reaching hard as their running out of ideas cant keep flogging the same phone year after year and now eu after their bs 30% on everything tax.

      • Firstly, 6k for a vr headset is crazy, but not downvoting because OP posted this for fun, like the 25k GPU someone posted last year :D

PSVR2 has 90% of the stuff in this for $900

I have the original PSVR (the PS4 version). This seems to be a different kind of device.
ie, for productivity, I hooked my PSVR up to my desktop thinking I'd have an awesome developer environment. Nope, fuzzy/blurry.

Using it for gaming, several times I've tripped over the cables playing super hot, etc.

I haven't read about this Apple product, but I'm guessing you can use it on PT / away from your other hardware with it's built in battery, where as PSVR need the AC power plug.

Apple is reaching hard as their running out of ideas cant keep flogging the same phone year after year and now eu after their bs 30% on everything tax.

Yeah, a VR headset seems like a weird thing for them to be hyping up. And at 6k, it's going to be really niche. If it's not easy to port VR apps to, who is going to bother with such a small user base?

        • Like i said check in march for psvr2 pc driver from ivry on twitter.

In terms of hardware there isnt much diff to most vr headset other than slapping a macbook to their head in essence, ill give the props for the size and design of the unit but really what are ppl going to be doing on it apart from what can already be done on a phone?

Wont be able to video or photo edit on it which is the main productivity thing on mac outside coding.

The cable thing shouldnt really be an issue as you arent moving much if productive.

Targeting the wrong market really, thats why sony has shifted with their new headset to workplaces with cad etc.

But yeah 6k wow will this be the unfailable companies first big fail, i dont consider the wireless coil charger they made a big fail just a fail as not main product.

    • Is it $5,548 better than a $799 quest 3 though?

      • Not from all the reviews I have seen, early reviews are all saying that its comparable to quest in tech (so the only difference is the luxury feel). I own a quest 3 and its phenomenal for the price.

  • +2

    Ripper Bargain!!!

    • +1

      Its a steal!

      • I am sure some will try.
