Do not buy from Centercom unless you are okay with these:

  1. 15% return fee if you open the item and want a refund.
  2. They do not refund surcharge from credit card even if you return the item unopened and within the return window.
  3. Rude staff. Generally, they know nothing, and often falsely the product information. I went to assemble a budget PC with 16GB of ram, but they secretly gave me 32GB and charged me 32GB price.
  4. Make sure you walk out with the actual product… I want to buy the AORUS 500GB SSD with the copper heatsink, the stuff gave me the one without despite both costing the same price.

Why shouldn't they charge a 15% restocking fee, would you pay full price for a returned open product ?

    • Apple store is fine with opened/activated products.

    • amazon does, and it works

      • Except all the companies leaving amazon due to the bs fees they have to deal with due to the ever increasing fraudulent returns they're out of pocket for. Now you get to enjoy your revolving door of 30 chinese companies with 30 letter gibberish names being pinned on each page of results!

Yeah 15% return fee for opened items seems reasonable. Don't most other stores not accept returns for opened items?

  • 12400f seems pretty cheap how does it compare to AMD 5600?

    • It's better. But both platform right now is a dead end.

Nice seems good for budget build but I'm guessing the 14th gen for double the price probably gives more than double the performance?

        • +3

          Most likely not…

        • +3

Don't bother with 14400F. It's literally using the same chip as 12400F.

Usually, the flagship (i9, i7) 14th Gen have more L2 cache per P(performance)-core. They call this raptor cove architecture.

But 14400F have the same L2 cache as 12400F Alder lake. So they are identical chip, with 14400F clocked higher.

    • They both perform roughly the same but power consumption is better on the 12400f especially at lower loads.

Nice deal. Personally I think the extra $20 for the iGPU on the 14600K and $14 extra on the 12400 worth.

Why bother with any of the xx900k cpus when 7800x3d is faster, cheaper (even with more expensive mobos) and doesn't require as expensive of a cooling solution? The 12400f is great value though.

ah classic assumption that pc is just for gaming

      • -1

Because the vast majority of people here (and in general) aren't buying it for productivity reasons.

Even then, a current gen 8 core cpu is more than fast enough for things like editing or programming, it's not like people are encoding/compiling 24/7. A lot of media related productivity is gpu tied anyways so it makes no difference there too.

      so say the fanboy.

      • What fanboying, giving objective information to save people money on a forum that's specifically about saving money?

    • Depends on your use case. Gaming just go with 7800X3d. Gaming + anything else (streaming, productivity) then go 14900k.

Fun fact, 7800X3d is actually faster in Large language model inference due to its larger L3 cache. Benchmarks here: https://www.anandtech.com/show/21084/intel-core-i9-14900k-co…

In fact intel is actually getting smashed for machine learning, which is actually quite surprising to me.

      • Maybe someone who is more experienced can comment on this. I’m a data scientist and I’m confused…

I’m a current 14900K owner, and the heat is a real problem. I’m using Liquid Metal + ROG Ryujin ii 240mm, and still getting 100C in cinebench. Idel is 30C tho. Real world gaming Cyberpunk is 70-80C.

        No OC at all.

        • 360mm is the standard for i9's, 280mm minimum, a 240 will cool it but it's just not beefy enough in most cases.

        • No OC at all.

Assuming you are running stock settings, basically your Z690/Z790 motherboard is applying some form of OC by default that you need to turn off in your BIOS. How you do that depends on the motherboard you have. With an MSI board, there is a setting called Lite Load that you can easily lower: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mkAVITZoLY

Also, not sure why you're messing around with LM while only having a 240 AIO. Furthermore, there's probably nothing wrong with hitting the TjMax when running cinebench — It's standard behaviour and you're fine as long as your 14900k is hitting the expected score.

  • The majority of your points are negated by simply knowing what you're after and using eftpos

I'm using 13900k and thiking to get 7800x3D to less power usage and less noise. I mainly play game with window machine as I work only in Macbook.

Do you guys think this is good thinking?

  • can confirm re: rude staff - seems to be a common occurrence at the Sunshine Store

    • That's crappy, Adelaide CBD store has friendly staff (at least when I've been there)

    • Pretty lousy customer service at Nunawading too. Seems like a common theme across the whole organisation…

I got my i9 14900kf for 875 two months ago. Can I still get a refund on the price diff?
