$150 take it or leave it Sony.

    • +2

3-5 years from now. Save that money.

  • +3

Let me know when an OLED version comes out

    • +3

The screen is actually phenomenal. I'm normally a person who is OLED or nothing, but the portal screen is comparable to the switch OLED. It's that good.

      • Yeah agreed; very nice for an LCD

  • $150 plus back buttons. As someone who suffers from cts, back buttons helps in gaming.

  • +10

To anyone, just go out and buy a tablet/phone, a controller phone clip and a controller. This is no different than the Remote Play app and DigitalFoundry tested the latency and quality differences vs the Remote Play app and found there was no difference.

    • +6

There is a different between this and unofficial apps…it's worse.

PSPlay is way better on Android and Chiaki is way better on Steam Deck.

      • ugh wish id known that before i bought the portal

        • Tried it. Its pretty hard to get working doesn't seem to work for remote play away from the home.

The PS Portal is really easy to use.

    • +3

Because the remote play app and portal use the same crappy setup. If you're playing on mobile as the above said, buy the app PSPlay and you'll see how much better it is. It's not even close.

Don't know why they don't just hire the creator and implement all his shit, big businesses I guess

      • +2

I had no idea there was a 3rd party app that let you do this.

I went and bought it and it really is miles faster than the crappy Sony app wtf lol

        • +1

          Yep, it's night and day

    • nah

  • +5

Just a heads up, the portal has 1/2 a second of audio delay when compared to the source, yet the video is basically 1:1. This is a best case cokkdcfij scenario.

Weirdly enough this does not happen with the PSPlay app on mobile and it's 1:1 with the TV, I'll probably return mine due to this and just use an OLED steam deck moving forward for remote play.

    • That's weird. What about audio viia the 3.5mm audio jack?

      • Same thing with headphones.

    • +2

Really? That would drive me up the wall lmao

I haven’t watched any reviews, had any mentioned such a wild audio delay too?

      • It's noticeable when having it next to the source with both sounds on, most people probably wouldn't even know it's there because they can't even tell (like how sooo many people can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps)

Issue for me personally, is now that I know it's there it's going to eat at me like bad lip syncing on dubbed movies haha

        • I can't believe people don't notice.

I've stopped watching entire series because the dub was off by a quarter or half second

        • Lets be real, only crazy ppl can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 FPS!

    • +1

I would suggest your setup has this delay and not the device itself.

I'm pretty sure any performance issues are based on the network of the user that the PS5 is on and also what network the Portal is on.

      • +2

As I said, this is exclusive to the Portal. Perfectly fine on the PSPlay app. Even tried it on my laptop and it's fine, so it's not a setup issue. I'm also a network administrator so I've forwarded every port remote play even touches.

It's a limitation of the device, or the protocol used. If they allowed the bitrate to be changed, it may fix it but I doubt they ever will.

        • +2

I would have thought this would be widely reported in every review?

Hope it's fixable via updates. I'm looking to get this at some stage so hopefully they fine tune it.

          • +2

@robbiey: Most people won't care, and most review are paid so is what it is.

I haven't seen a single one side by side with sound on to compare, as when people think of input lag, they think of video.

            • @naedtrax: Is the lag across all audio do you know?

As in have you tried 3.5mm jack or even a Pulse Headset? I have the Pulse Explore earbuds, would be interested in seeing if that makes any difference.

              • @robbiey: Lag is through the jack aswell, I don't have the explores anymore as I returned them as they didn't fit my ears at all unfortunately.

I don't see it changing the audio unfortunately, again I'm sure most people can deal with this delay, but it is there

  • This is like the wii u right?

    • -4

      Long story short, basically.

      • Nope. It's not.

    • +4

No, the Wii U broadcasts it's own signal to the handheld and didn't require a router or internet connection.

Absolutely unforgivable Sony didn't do the same.

      • Also the Wii U actually plays games either physically and digitally. This is purely streaming. Which is spotty at best.

        • No different to the PS5 having digital or physical but it needs wifi and internet which is (profanity) disgraceful in 2024 given the WiiU did this better a decade ago.

    • If you mean playing your games at home without a TV, then yes it is the same. It's not as good as the Wii U did it as it doesn't have custom hardware so it's reliant of the quality of your home Wi-Fi.

  • +2

I've been looking at the Backbone one and waiting for it to go back down to $120. Still seems a better option than these.

    • Few on gumtree for half that.

      • They will be the 1st version, 2nd revised edition only came out a few months ago.

  • RRP $329

    • +2

Yep, typical Gamesmen scum jack the price everytime there's an eBay promo code.

  • I'll stick with me Legion Go with soon to be released PSPlay for Windows.

    • My old phones work great. No need to buy an expensive handheld

      • +1

If it suits you for sure. I was using my Z Fold 4/5 but I wanted a bigger screen.

        • +1

Yea true. I just use TVs

          • @onlinepred: Same, but I wanted a better and more immersive experience.

  • +2

Other than old Sony proprietary shenanigans, no reason this shouldn't support standard Bluetooth headphones. I suspect they must be digging very deep in the old parts bin for this to have WiFi 5 when the rest of the market is transitioning from WiFi 6 to 6E and 7.

    • It's the "no bluetooth audio for Switch" all over again.

  • PS Portal

Best way to sum it up is either you hate or love it.

I love it, previously travelled with an iPad/Controller/Backbone One, so this just makes it simplier.

Relies heavily on network and now the kids can have the main TV full time while I game anywhere in/out the house. (Mainly play single player games)

  • Regardingthe alternative of just using a phone and the app, do the ps5 controller and Android devices pair flawlessly for renote play or is it still an issue?

  • +1

Cheaper with 10% off at BigW with Reward Code

  • +1

You’re better off saving $100-200 more & buy 64GB steam deck LCD model or even score 256GB model. With Chiaki or Chiaki4Deck you’ll get superior performance, better bitrate stream controls, resolution adjustments, custom key bindings, and you’re not constrained to PS only ecosystem.

    • -1

Where are you buying a steam deck for $120?

      • Think they meant 100-200 dollars more than this deal.

        • Makes sense. $100-$200 isn’t a small…

    • I agree Steam Deck can do the same thing and much more.

  • I have a S23 Ultra and razor plugin backbone thing. The issue I find is that the phone screen is just a bit small for on screen text. Particularly noticeable on single player adventure games with lots of quest info. I hoping the bigger portal screen will make that easier.

Also kind of worried about performance. As people of said the unofficial PSPlay app is so much better than Sony's. Even still, with my Ps5 plugged into lan and my phone pretty much under a ceiling unifi AP I still get streaming artefacts which seem to increase with game session. Will this work flawlessly?

  • +1

I have this. I like it, but cannot recommend it to anyone as it is a single purpose device.

I might return it and get a Meta Quest 3 instead as it may offer better experience for remote play than this. if anyone else tried this, please let me know as Im very interested in the whole MixedReality thing.

  • so apart from a built in screen, whats the differance between this and a backbone? at least backbone is $120 slot your phone in and bam, remote play over my data.

    • This feels like a really quality product. the controls are the same as the dual sense. Full feedback triggers. Screen is huge. Whole thing is solid. You can hold it from on side one handed and the whole thing still feels incredibly solid. No flimsiness
