WD Elements SE Portable Hard Drive 1TB $68, 2TB $88, 4TB $138, 5TB $216 + Delivery ($0 to Metro/ C&C/ in-Store) @ Officeworks

680

I was looking for a decent brand 1TB SSD/HDD as my secondary data back up and this one seems decent. The same model number is sold for $95 at the good guys, so that’s about 30% cheaper. WD is a decent brand as well. I have ordered one and free delivery ( I have one pass membership).

They have other storage options available too

1 TB - $68
2 TB- $88
4TB- $138
5TB - $216

Key specs.

Hard drive capacity 1 TB, HDD
Model number- WDBEPK0010BBK-WESN
This hard drive supports USB 3.0 connections, but is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 devices.
It has a built-in USB cable so you can connect to your computer right away.

    Not a SSD though.

    • OP is fixated in buying a portable storage drive and didn’t go through the product info.

Defo not an SSD and considering Samsung rugged 1TB SSD was sold around this price, I’d skip this deal.

Thanks guys for pointing out, I have updated the description and added HDD, personally I don’t worry much about SSD for long term storage. HDD is just fine for me for data storage. This is still 30% cheaper than good guys though

Pretty sure the equivalent capacity SSD is always more expensive

Nah, I got 1TB WD Green SSD for around $50 new

        • +1

Don’t think that’s common but potentially could get 1TB for less than than $68. I must admit the 1TB HDD is bad value
Very unlikely larger capacity will be better priced with SSDs

          • +1

@FireRunner: I just checked on camelcamelcamel to compare the prices and the SSD prices have increased quite alot

        • Where?

          • +1

@CyberMurning: It’s definitely not that price anymore. Can’t remember if it was umart, centrecom etc

      • 1-2TB 'offbrand but not too bad' SSDs can usually be found about this price or cheaper. 3+TB SDD costs go way up though.

I'm looking for 5TB SSD, any idea where I could find one for less than $216?

    • +4

      Wish I could find a 5TB SSD for $216

Same Price on Amazon, and not many good reviews!

    SSD >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HDD

SSD is impervious to being dropped off the table, which will be the biggest risk of data loss for a portable HDD.

At the same price point, there is zero reason to buy this.

my 18 year old 2tb external had was $120, they milking so hard lol

fugging sd cards now more expensive/gb than ssds, hilarious stuff

got a fanxiang 4tb ssd for $240 will HODL for 16tb come at me

  • Question on backups. Although I have several drives with backups of backups for photos/tax files/property docs etc. I've lost my data because they all failed/drives won't discover. What do people use for long term reliable backup?

    • +4

Keep at least 3 backups on a combination of different media ie. SSD/HDD/cloud/burned to disk. Read from your backups regularly to test and replace drives when they are getting on in their service life.

    • Cloud. Honestly, cloud backup for anything important with one of the big tech companies (Microsoft or Google) is the absolute safest backup system there is in terms of never losing it.

      • +1

        Yes, I agree.
Unfortunately it is more expensive :(

        Google:
        5 TB
        A$314.99 / year

        • Turkish apple Id. Currently 5tb/year is 2499 lira, around $126. I am on the 200gb/month for t339.99/year.
Also Microsoft family I pay t23.99/month $1.21/month. Using apple iTunes gift card to top up. Can do 1000lira now and lasts a while. Especially when Disney+ renews. Current renewal price is t649.99, ~$33.

@Mikael: If there's one thing I'm not going to do with my backups, it's violate terms of service from the get go. Yes it costs more to do it the right way, but it's worth it. Imagine having 5TB of your family photos, videos, and documents and then your account gets permanently closed for violating the terms of service. No thanks, not worth the risk.

@MrFunSocks: @MrFunSocks Also got Australian office. Backing my things up on NAS and most crucial using the Australian one. Do understand the risks and using that for other projects. I could use my NAS that got all my info and Turkish backup until/if it gets closed. If so just back up elsewhere.

HDDs are better than SSDs for cold storage though (long-term archival).

    • +3

They don't need to be powered periodically like solid state, but they can still be subject to failure.

    • Should i keep them in the fridge?

    • +2

Yep my HDD from 2012 that I used in highschool still works when I plug it in

    • +1

Oh I never knew this. Is this because SSD is using flash drive technology so they can fail more?

      • The SSD nand flash cells that holds your data loses charge over time. 10101101 becomes 00000000. Then you are Fxxxed. HDD takes longer, much longer.

        • Oh man, this whole digital archiving thing is so hard on my stupid brain.

    • This is a fact.

Be wary buying WD Portable drives.

In my experience they all have the USB controller as part of the main device, and are not shuckable in the same fashion as Seagates offerings. Means unless you have an identical USB controller to install, if/when it dies, the entire drive is dead. Not so with the Seagates which the ones I have used are shuckable and reusable, either in a generic portable caddy, or in your laptop/computer/raspberry pi etc.

Say what you want about their 3.5" drives, everyone seems to have a preferance, but WD 2.5" portables I'd steer clear of.

    • I've had this happen to a wd hdd. Lost thousands of curated movies. These are words of wisdom.

      • Always backup.

  • Remember when I got the 2tb in 2020, darn inflation!

  • Does inflation count if the manufacturing date was years ago? or is that just upping prices for additional profit?

  • Would this better a bet at a slightly lower price? (before gift cards etc)

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Toshiba-Canvio-Partner-Portable-Ex…

  • Anything bigger?
Looking for a couple 10tbs for my plex server.

  • I feel like it's always been this price at MSY before they got acquired by Umart…

have to utilize 10% off GC to make it a deal.

My WD dropped off the table and can't access the data anymore.

When I plug it to my desktop, I can see the portable hard drive in the disk management but can't access the data., not sure how to recover.

    • Depending on the drive, if you take the case apart you might be able to plug it in to a caddy and it might work, but if it's like many portable HDDs it won't have a regular sata connection. Only real hope then is to go to a professional who can swap out the broken parts, and hope there's no damage to the actual HDD.

  • Seems like the 4TB has gone back up to $189 :(

    • Looks like they've all gone back to their original prices.

  • where is the link for $68?

  • I got a 2TB WD Elements SE portable hard drive from OW for $69 last June - looks like back to $126 - https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/wd-2tb-ele… - so this $88 offer is the current 'deal'

but I never opened the box since I got a 1TB Samsung SSD for maybe $95 instead which I use for my weekly laptop backup

the SSD takes about 20 seconds to back up my laptop including 6GB of my email

I suspect the HD would take multiples of that time
