Can we get an example price for the 15,16,17,18 etc

    • +13

      Michelin Primacy 4 215/60R16 is $179 a tyre (incl. fitting) x 4 = $796 -$100 for normal discount and -$200 for Exec = $496 for a set ($124 per tyre incl. fitting)

      Michelin Pilot Sport 5 245/45R18 is $286 a tyre (incl. fitting) x 4 = $1144 -$150 for normal discount and -$200 for Exec = $794 for a set ($198.50 per tyre incl. fitting)

If you need more you can always use the website https://www.costco.com.au/.

  • What happens to your remaining membership

    • +4

You pay pro-rata for the upgrade eg, Your membership ends in May(3 months) you'd pay $16.25 to upgrade

    • +1

Remember taking screenshot of the membership before upgrading. I was informed of the same thing that the upgrade will be prorated when costco member offered the upgrade at checkout.
However, when i logged back into the app after the upgrade, i found my membership expiry date had shortened. I did not lose much, from around 15 Aug to 31 July. So roughly two weeks.
As i did not have any evidence i just moved on, but it was quiet disappointing.

      • +1

Just as an FYI memberships always expire at the end of a month, Is it possible you're looking at the rewards tab and it's showing the day your cashback is available which is 10 days before expiry eg. the 22nd of July?

  • +3

Still a fair bit more than what I paid at JAX for PS4s during their promotion.

  • So for the cheaoest tyres, that might be 1.7 to 2 tyres free

  • bridgestone tyres also have a similar discount (buy 4, get discount). Not sure about the executive member pricing though not sure how to check if they have it.

Bridgestone 195/65R15 91V Ecopia EP300 price 146 per tyre with a discount of $36.50 per tyre for buying 4. with the tyre fit and balance it's 497.97

Edit: it's just the michelin tyres, nothing on bridgestone

  • -3

With respect this doesn't seem like a great deal.

  • +1

I’ll buy your tyres for you, this exec membership is pretty useless

    • I agree. Nothing too special for exec members. Waste of money. 2% and spend $3k. Means more money for Costco

    • +1

I would say if you are on Oz bargain the whole membership is pretty useless and for occasional stuff you don't get at other places there are ways around it

    • +1

I've done lots of research into this. Truth is that Michelin tyres are hands down the best, but that is only considering low profile sports use as per my specific use case

      • +1

Truth is that Michelin tyres are hands down the best

        Totally agree.

After 1.5 years of having them, I would get the Pilot Sports again.
I don't have low profile sports use, but its performance in the rain
        and around corners, is fantastic.

However, the grippiness of the tyres has downside,
ie. the rubber is softer, so it can be punctured more easily,
but with run-flats, you get a little piece of mind.

    • +8

Braindead comment. Stickier, higher performing tyres are always going to last less than shitty eco tyres. Would you rather save a bit of money and use some shitty chinese ling longs, hydro plane and crash on the freeway, or buy a quality tyre from a reputable manufacturer?

      • -3

buy a quality tyre from a reputable manufacturer?

They all come from china, dont they?

        and crash on the freeway,

Never heard of anyone crashing on a freeway from chinese tyres.

        • +9

          Enjoy your ling longs.

          • +2

@brifog: Still waiting on that story of the guy who crashed his car on the freeway due to ling longs

            • +6

@easternculture: I would say more on a corner. And particularly in the wet.

I've had 2 cars that I bought that had cheap chinese tyres on. Old rodeo ute - could hardly get up the hill in the wet. Changed to good chinese tyres and massive difference (lauken - sure they're made in china but chalk/cheese)

My son's Peugeot 208gti had some cheap chinese tyres. Handling was crap compared to mine. Changed to some Michelin PS5 - totally different car.

If you think all tyres are the same then good luck to you. They are all much the same in a straight line but braking and cornering, particularly in the wet is what you pay the $$$ for.

              • -3

@tonydav: Well apparently pirelli rates at the bottom of premium tyres according to a few reviews i watched, so these chinese ones (apprently the better ones) might be on par lol

ZC Rubber (Zhongce Rubber Group Co. Ltd.), China's leading tire maker, is ranked Top 8 in 2022 global tire companies released by Tire Business, up one notch from a year earlier. ZC Rubber witnessed rapid growth in 2021

                • @easternculture: Knock yourself out ec:

Out of interest what brand and spec was the Chinese tyre you found so wonderful and what was the Pirelli? The Japanese brake pads and rotors on my V6 Jackaroo lasted more than 150,000km. Rotors were skimmed when the new pads went on, and not because they needed it.

                  • -2

@Igaf: I didnt find anything wonderful. Just saying i have doubts with branded tyres and like anything else, some branded tyres are made budget too and could possibly be on par with some chinese tyres or ling longs as someone would like to call them, offcourse excluding high performance premium tyres.

So YMMV, marketing is a big thing and unfortunatly many people fall into the marketing trap. So im back to chinese tyres from reputable manufacturers for now.

But i still have the back tyres fitted with the Pirelli's and have contacted mycar regarding the front ones (with esafety report) and they agree that it may have been a manufacturer defect as they said they should last longer , plus no evidence of erratic driving because the back tyres are fine . So just in the process of waiting on a resolution whether refund for front tyres or replacement.

The Japanese brake pads and rotors on my V6 Jackaroo lasted more than 150,000km

Really depends. Was it brand new car under the 5 year rule that it doesnt need a pink slip because our other car never had the brake pads changed until it hit 6 years old and travelled over 140000km and the pads were pretty much non existant.

I usually have mine changed every 2 years , if im too lazy then i stretch it to about 3 years (which is the general consensus ) but thats the max regardless of what the mechanic says.

                    • +2

@easternculture: Any reason why you won't specify the two tyres ec? The links I posted were thousands of reviews which don't appear to accord with yiour generalisations, nothing to do with marketing.

Every brand can have occasional (rare) quality issues, esp since tyres (and cars) are now made in factories around the world rather than in the country/region of the company origin as they generally once were. That is, the same tyre brand and spec can be made in entirely different places. From memory many of ours are sourced from Asian-Pacific regions, for obvious reasons, whereas if you live in Africa, or USA, or Europe the same tyre will likely be made elsewhere.

China makes some excellent products, they also make a whole lot of garbage, and everything in between. Tyres are no exception. Your generalising about known brand tyres and your own cherry picked experience should be taken with a grain of salt imo.

BUT - every brand usually has a range of tyres with varying qualities, so relying on brand reputation alone isn't a clever way of selecting suitable tyres.

Early days for most Chinese brand tyres. When they and their manufacturers have proven themselves in our/similar conditions and have consumer reviews to back that up along with good support, I'll be happy to consider them. Hopefully that time isn't far off.

They are all much the same in a straight line but braking and cornering, particularly in the wet is what you pay the $$$ for.

You should always keep a safe distance regardless of what tyres you have. Same thing in wet weather and turning corners, you are meant to slow down to a safe speed, not turn corners like a lunatic and go over speed limit/tailgate on wet roads like an idiot.

Road rules and legistlation are there for a reason, to prevent accidents.

                • +1

                  @easternculture:

You should always keep a safe distance regardless of what tyres you have

The safe distance is directly related to the traction available from your tyres. i.e. what tyres you have. If you buy crap tyres you will need to keep a larger distance.

chinese tyres or ling longs as someone would like to call them

Linglong is an actual brand of Chinese tyres sold in Australia.

The safe distance is directly related to the traction available from your tyres

Not necessarily. As the tyre wears, the traction changes. So unless you have an AI that calculates the traction, that is not possible unfortunatly.

                    • @easternculture:

Not necessarily. As the tyre wears, the traction changes.

As I said, "directly related to the traction available from your tyres".

Tyres also have differing traction when brand new.

You stick to your linglongs, and I will stick with Michelin.

    • +3

Nothing wrong with cheap anything if you're happy. For me personally, tyres are not something I judge by longevity as they're the most important temporary part of any vehicle.

    • +3

Durability shouldn't be your number 1 priority with tyres.
Wet braking and wet handling are most important as that is when accidents are more likely to happen. Then Dry braking and dry handling.

I've had Chinese tyres that lasted 40,000kms+ but the wet grip was shocking and unsafe, aqua planed many times even in slow corners.
Not all Chinese brands or even reputable brands are made equal but if your tyre is super hard and not wearing out, it's probably not very grippy.

  • Are you sure it's an added discount? Do you know ifs it at the Auburn store?

    • +2

      I'm sure yes, Australia-wide.

      • Cheers. Last question, do I need to pre book or can they do on the day?

        • Almost always you’ll need to make a booking, unless they are quiet and you have a common car so they have a tyres in stock, Depends on the store.

          • +1

@YourImag1nat1on: Does purchasing online automatically make a booking?
Do I actually have to go into the store to make a booking and include the executive membership discount?

            • +2

@damion: Purchasing online you can select a preferred booking date, but it will most likely be booked out already (They have to also wait for the tyres to come in from the depot, online orders do no use in store stock)

The $200 off is in warehouse only, they might be willing to refund and resell you in store but YMMV, I would suggest you order in store

  • +2

An additional $19.99 inc GST fitting charge per tyre will be added to your basket at checkout.

    What on earth?

    • That is the american drip pricing view…. You never pay what you see.

  • Question about Costco Executive membership:

So it's an additional $65 a year and the membership desk can check your spending the last 12 months to see if it's worth it. I believe you can also see this in the Costco app.

So say for example you have just went through half a year of your membership, and it shows in the app that you could have potentially saved $65 already in cashback.

At this point I know that you have the option to upgrade to Executive by paying the pro rated amount for the remainder of the year (in this case half of $65 for the remaining 6 months). But by doing so do you get the $65 in cashback already earned in the first half of the year?

    • +1

No, Cashback is not retroactive, If it was everyone would just upgrade with 2 months to go for $10.83 and earn 2% on every purchase for the last almost 10 months.

  • +2

Oh and one more separate question about the tyres. So Costco does fitting but do they also do tyre alignment? If so how much do they charge for that?

    • +1

No wheel alignment, just tyre fitting and balancing.

      • +1

and filling and rotation as well I think periodically?

        • +1

Yes, Free Rotation and Balance every 10000km and free puncture repairs

          • +1

@YourImag1nat1on: Also how often can you fill with nitrogen for free?

            • +1

@ATTS: I suppose as often as you like, but it wouldn’t need to be checked very often with how stable the nitrogen is, maybe every 2-3 months.

              • @YourImag1nat1on: I see thanks

Oh thats right, nitrogen was more stable than o2

        • +1

You will have to book months in advance and they don't allow someone else other than the member to take the vehicle there.
Morrabin tyre cente employees are specifically trained to treat customers without courtesy. When you want to check the tyre pressure/refill you will be at their mercy.
Puncture repairs will be another issue eventhough it is free

          • +2

@Wiser: Last year, I had to wait for three hours to get the tires rotated. Even though it's free, I don't want to go through that again.

            • @Yoo05: Exactly.
Your time worth more than that.
Since I was going away I had to fight and escalate the issue for my son to get one tyre replaced, eventhough I orderded and paid in store.
To replace a tyre they will charge you the maximum possible price.

  • +1

still cheaper at even jax with not much searching for 245/40/21 and 275/35/21 costco $2882 less discount, + fitting vs $2343 fitted

    • Same tyres? What are these?

Last time I bought tyres I used the Costco price at Bridgestone Select and they pricematched the lower Costco price.

    • link ?

  • +1

Woah PS5's have gone up so much everywhere - last time I looked last year was under $1k fitted but tyres weren't quite worn out enough to change

    Now looks like $1200

      PS6 will have better graphics

  • I need some new All-terrain tyres for my Prado, any recommendation

    • I bought a combined highway/all terrain tyre for my prado. Best move i've done.

Its fantastic to drive on the highway now which is 95% of my driving. All terrain blocks in the middle, with highway tyre on the edge. So much less road noise, 1L less fuel consumption per 100km. Still goes well off road.

      • Yea im not doing much off-roading, I'll look into that.

        Thank you

    • +1

Look for the mycar sales on Pirellis, I picked up some SCORPION ALL TERRAIN PLUS (not the SCORPION ATR those are the more SUV road tyre) and they've been great, nice and quiet compared to BFG AT2's, much better in the wet, as capable off-road if not more. They're on a FJ Cruiser.

    • Also have a Prado Kakadu, 18" rims. I researched for months before landing on 3 - Toyo Open Country III (very expensive), Yokohama G015, and Falken Wildpeak AT3W. Yoko and Falken have regular buy 3 get 1 free promos. Both usually twice a year, next Yoko one due around Easter.

Ended up buying the 265/60R18 119S Geolandar G015 (LT version) at BJ TMarts for 25% off all 5 tyres. LT has thicker tread, stronger sidewalls. $351/tyre (~$470 normal price).

See some comments and links on this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/817623
TireRack, com (linked in that deal discussion) has very good research info, incl tests against other tyres in some cases.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14672068/redir

      • Oh cheers

        • When I wrote thicker tread, I meant deeper tread in case it wasn't clear. Found a site with tread depth and weight info (only select tyres), I'll see if I bookmarked it or can find it and post link here.

        • God I hate this site's archaic inabillty to save comments as you write. Just lost another detailed post.

Tyre spec website is this: https://tiresize.com/tires/Yokohama/Geolandar-AT-G015.htm

It shows for example that the 265/60R18 Yoko G015 119S has about 4mm extra tread depth and weighs 4kg more than the 110H version. Also has much bigger load and tyre pressure capacity due to sidewall strengthening. This may not be important to you but if you air down for beaches etc that extra strength is a big benefit.

Haven't learnt to use tables for Ozb yet but hopefully this will be readable, Easy to cut and paste from the website into your own spreadsheet.

@Igaf: thanks for this, appreciate it

            • @rsop: Glad to help. I bought my Kakadu second hand with very low k's (ticked over 50,000 kms as I drove it home) and retired my tyres on age not tread so had plenty of time to research, see what others were doing (incl checking out vehicles at sporting events as I walked past, lol), and watch the market for deals.

Everyone has different needs/preferences but the more user feedback the better. Used to be a Bridgestone Dueler fan (good all rounder but excelled at nothing). Their price jumped and their tread longevity dropped so I took them off my list of possibles.

  • Eventhough it is cheap the troubles come later
If you need to rotate the tyres you will have wait for months and member must take the vehicle there. No option to get it done through a friend or family member who is not on the membership. So weired
If your tyre is puntured it is supposed to be repaired free but the turnaround time may be weeks.
They wiil try their best to prove that the tyre is not repairable and will charge you hightest retail price to replace the tyre.Again long waits, multiple trips
From my experience the Moorabbin tyre centre employees are worst in dealing with the customers.
They treat you as if they are doing a favour
    No wheel alignment service available.
No option for non NITROGEN filling

    • +1

Why is the non-nitrogen unavailability a problem? Tipping up tyres with normal air is okay - it's 78% nitrogen anyway….

  • -3

People on Ozbargain shouldn't be going to Costco anyway, so there's no deal here.

  • Is $200 discount for existing executive members or new members who signed up this month?

    • I think for all exec member. I signed up last year and got my discount for the tyre.

      • Thanks.

  • +5

FWIW, Michelin Pilot Sport 5 235/35/19
    - Costco: $1251 (including Executive discount, but adding $65 for the Executive membership fee)
    - Jax: $1566
    - Tempe Tyres: $1420

But yes you’d also get the 2% cash back, around $28

yep, you're right. Makes it $1331. Still not as cheap, but still the cheapest.

    • thankyou for doing the comparative maths

  • I got one month left on my regular membership (expires end of Feb). Does it mean I should upgrade to exec (prorated to about $5.5?) to get an additional $100 saving?

    • +1

You have to have a minimum of 2 months left to upgrade prorated, you’ll need to renew for $130 for the year, and then you’ll get the $200 savings

How is the Michelin 225/55R18 98V PRIMACY SUV +225/55R18 98V

    • Should be more than 1.5mm , otherwise you fail esafety check

  • Got 4 Michelin tires installed today. Went for executive membership as it provided additional $200 off. Paid $774 for 4 including fitting. Reasonably good deal.

    • +1

What size and model did you get?
      Enjoy the new tyres!

      • Primacy, 235/55R18.

        • +1

Looks like an excellent deal. 4 premium 18 inch tyres for under $200 each!

    • PRIMACY 235/55R18 = $304 each so with fitting it should be $325 x 4 - $150 - $200 = $950

How did you manage to get them for $774

      • Oh, I must have mixed up the size. Got 215/55R18. Those were around $281 each including fitting.

  • Which of the Michelin lines that Costco sells is equivalent to Turanza? Sorry I'be been buying Bridgestone and never used Michelin.

    • +1

Primacy 4 would be the most equivalent

      • Thank you, got Primacy 4.

  • Can someone confirm

That we can stack both the $100 for 17 inch or lower, off and also the $200 off for executive membership = 300$ off for a set of 4?

    • Yes. If you have an Executive Membership you will get an extra $200 in addition to the $100 Michelin promotion. This is in store at the Costco tyre centre.

      • I see thanks mate!

If we buy instore does the below apply aswell? Cheers in advance

An additional $19.99 inc GST fitting charge per tyre will be added to your basket at checkout

        • Yes. The store quoted prices will include fiiting and balancing, and will $20 more per tyre than the price you see online.
