Aren't they free from the council? Maintenance/warranty included.

    • +4

No, you pay for the green bin in your rates. at least in BCC, it is that way

      • +35

You pay for the removal of waste in your rates, the council loans you the bin in that rate, the bin belongs to the council and they repair/replace lost/stolen/damanged bins.

At least that is how I understand it in every state I've lived in.

        • Same understanding. Unless you need more than one and council charges extra for that, and this might be cheaper.

          • +1

@cheaponos: Yes they do charge per bin- a monthly rate. I don't know if they will empty the unmarked bins (in my council area all the bins have the council logo).

            • +2

@reactor-au: A lot of councils have RFID in the bins they supply, so that's another way that they can check that the wheelie bin that's emptied into the truck matches the serial number of the bin for that address.

                  • +37

                    @frugalferret: wow that sucks.

When I have a lot of green waste, like after a storm or windy day,
I always put my bin on the other side of the road again after the truck has emptied it on my side.
It takes at least 30 mins for it to come back, enough time for me to refill my bin.

                    • +1

@TanedaR: How did I not think about this before…

                      • @ShouldIBuyIt: …because you care about your neighbour's getting upset at you!

                        • @whyisave: Why would they get upset?

                          • @cv05: If you are not on good terms with your neighbours,
many neighbours are just territorial in nature.

                    • +1

@TanedaR: Yup - done that more than once. Also get the in laws bin and fill both up at my place twice, then fill them both up again and take them to the in laws. So I get 6 empties in a week. 2 at mine, 2 across the road and 2 at the in laws. Mind you they get heavy lifting into the back of the ute when they are full.

                      • +1

@freesteakknives: How are you producing so much waste? I'd put my bin out once per six weeks if it wasn't for the smell.

                    • @TanedaR: That's pretty clever idea, not sure I could now the grass that quick though 😂

                    • @TanedaR: I used to be able to do that, except I only had less than 5 min before the truck came back up the opposite side.

Now I live at the end of a cul-de-sac and not possible anymore :-(

              • @frugalferret: :O they do??

          • @cheaponos: Cheaper, but they will not empty it. Or at least if they catch you, they will charge you.

        • +1

The cost of the service is for bin production and collection costs.

Not sure if they give a used bin to the next owner?

          • +3

@Bii: I've never heard of people taking the bins with when moving house.

Whenever I've ordered another bin or replacement, I've always received a new one (or maybe just looks new, I wouldn't care either way).

      • +3

Not sure why your comment is being negged. You are spot on for BCC, you pay to rent the bin and have it emptied. It is not included in your rates but rather added to your rates.

    • +9

Free on bin day if you're fast enough too

    • +1

Exactly my point, council do provide them and I assume you cannot use these 'personal' bins else the driver doesn't pick this up, not sure how true is this

      • +5

When I was in a share house we just put an additional bin out the front that didn't come with the rental and they emptied it every time.

        • +1

My place has two green bins, we put the other down the road a bit so it looks like it belongs to another house when they pick them up.

          • +1

@AustriaBargain: No need to do this, you can have two of the same type at the same house. I asked BCC on the phone and they said it's fine. I have two yellows after I ordered a second one, I put them side by side kerbside sometimes and they both get emptied.

      • +2

Yeah apparently you do not pay for a new bin, you pay for a new or upgraded "service".

Although let's be real, I am 99.9% sure the ones driving the truck a) don't give a shit and b) don't know which houses have extra services and not. If council see it or one of your neighbours dob you in though, I can see how that could land you in hot water.

        • +1

How would they ever prove it but, just cause you decide to leave your personal bin out on bin day doesn't mean you had the intention of it being picked up. Australian law is guilty until proven innocent though so maybe you're right.

          • @lookingforadeal7: RFID in bins is becoming a real thing

            • @DarwinBoy: First time I'm hearing of this. How are the RFID tags installed and if an RFID tag is missing/damaged, does the truck still take the rubbish?

              • @Widget: "What happens if you damage or remove the RFID tag?
Our drivers will not be able to verify that the bin belongs at your address and it will not be emptied."

From the Horsham link provided by @frugalferret

                • @DarwinBoy: Thanks for the link. Quite concerning, seems most people don't like it. Only a matter of time before charged by weight :/.

                  • @Widget: Could be. They will certainly gain a lot of information from it, hopefully useful. But i wouldnt be surprised if it means that some people get personalised letters for been overweight.

                • +1

@DarwinBoy: seems like the simplest solution is just to put all your rubbish in a neighbour's bin

                  • @c64: Rfid cant stop that so your right there.

    • $50/year in my council.

    • Adelaide hills it's $80 for the bin

    • Depends on the council. Where I live you buy it yourself - and then some bogan steals it.

  • +15

thanks! i've already got duct tape and zip ties. this should come in handy

    • +1

Cheapo chest freezers are all the rage for that.

      • How do you get water out of them?
Is there a drain valve included ?

        • I believe so. From what i know water changes are not often. I know a guy been doing it for a few yrs, works well for a basic setup.

    • +2

Only if you're small. I tried to hop in one at Bunnings and couldn't quite fit. 5'11 and 85kg

  • Apparently it's trendy to wheel your luggage around in wheelie bins in America.. no joke.

  • +3

I think it's not easy to transfer rubbish from this bin to the council bin?

  • +3

100L ones are great for cans and bottles for recycling

    • Roughly how many do the 100L hold?

      • +36

        100L worth

      • 100 litres of water or 100kg…

        • +1

It has to be distilled water. It makes a big difference.

      • I’d guess 100? Roughly, you can still pick them
Up and take them to the recycling places easily

      • +4

I have the 240L I use for storing cans, whenever I take the bag to the recycling place when it’s full it's about $30 worth. The bag fits on the back seat of my small sedan

        • +2

So, just about 1.5x full bins pays for this bin deal :-)

        • what bag fits in a 240 L bin?

          • +1

@mrvaluepack: I bought two packs from Bunnings at the time, they were the cheapest ones they sold and they are absolutely terrible they are incredibly thin and they tear and you need to stretch them to fit over even though they claimed to be 240l bags but then again they do the job for cans to the recycling place I just wouldn’t use them for garden clippings etc.

The supermarkets sell good quality ones but idk if it’s worth paying the extra

Edit: my Bunnings invoice from over a year ago says they were “glitz 240l bags”

          • @mrvaluepack: you can buy bin liners for specifically this size/purpose

    • and it's only $10 shipping while $50 for the large one

      • +1

Free with OnePass for the small one.

    • +1

I was thinking the same thing. I could use it to hold bags of cans/bottles and when I have filled 3 large bags, I can call a company to come and collect for free.

A similar service in our area is you can buy the blue bins ($109) and a company comes and exchanges for an empty bin, then pays you the 10c refunds.

      • How do they make a profit? Is it a charity?

        • +2

You actually pay more then 10c extra at the store you buy them for these days. Drinks went up say 20c each. 10c for you. 10c for the processor via the government

      • How do they know how much money to give you? Do they count the bottles/cans at your place?

    • Yep we took ours to return and earn last weekend. A full bin was about 20 bucks so 200 items.

  • +16

Pro tip. Buy one of these. Take the the lid off. Report to council about damaged bin, and they will put a new official lime green lid on and then use during regular green waste pickup saving $250+ per year for an additional bin as the garbo driver doesn't give a toss when collecting. Note - older green bins never had council logos on the bin itself just the council name on the lid

    • What if reporting lost bin? Council may have a way around this I guess

    • No way? So an Ev driver can pay $250 per year for an extra green bin waste?

    • YMMV on this. When I bought my house I had 4 bins. Red, yellow, green and one that the lid is the same colour as the bin. I had NFI what this 4th bin was for, but I saw other people using it in lieu of a red bin so I assumed I just had two red bins. (I guess somewhere along the line they changed from that old bin to red lids, and let people just keep the old one if they wanted?? I dunno, they aren't even the same size).

They collected both for a while then abruptly stopped emptying it. After two or three collections of them purposefully ignoring it I called up and was told I was not paying for 2 red bins. So I told them to come empty it and then take it away.

I can't imagine that if I suddenly had 2 green bins that it would go any differently.

      • +1

        which council?

        • Campbelltown

    • +1

Wouldn't the bin repairer be suss because it's a new bin with no council logo or sticker?

      • Could always take the lid off the old bin, put it on the new bin, and give the old bin without lid to the bin repairer.

Lotta work but hey … this is OzBargain :P

  • Quick question to those in BCC…my red bin has seen better days but I’ve heard that if you ask council to swap it for a new one they’ll give me a little one, not the 240L. Can anyone verify this? I’d be happy to use a small red bin if the council provided a green bin too but they don’t, so my grass clippings go in the red bin, therefore I need a big one.

I’f the pins are the same I’ll buy one of these and just swap the lids. Anyone tried this?

    • I know in around my area, red waste bins are mostly black/grey so couldn't use a green bin as a red waste bin as that would raise suspicions. But unless there is council bin nazis roaming the streets checking bins, the normal garbo driver isn't going to care what size your bin is

    • +3

Every Council does it different! Information may be on your Council's website. If not, phone and ask.

    • the will only upgrade the yellow bin for free

    • +2

No they replace like for like (they did with mine last year). If you opt in for the smaller bin, you save $120 a year in rates.

    • I've seen newer units in my street get very small 80 litre weekly red-top bins. We've got a 120l from over 15 years ago. Also seems the bi-weekly Yellow recycle bin is smaller for newer units as well. Our block of units seem much bigger.

  • +13

I’ve Wheelie Bin looking for one of these!

  • +6

Just like Hulk, it only comes in green.

    Ewww.

  • Hulk comes colours other than green.

  • +1

I'm in BCC and pay rates for the small general waste bin service but bought myself the large 240ltr bin from Bunnings.
Don't think the Garbo driver cares that my bin has a green lid and everyone else has red lids.
I thinks it's over $100 cheaper per year when you choose the smaller 140ltr bin service.

    • Im in bcc and my bin is still green lid and thats after they replaced it. Weird

    • Our garbos care I have a generic large one I put gardening stuff in and they won't empty it …only the respective coloured bins will get emptied, ive now removed the lid so they can't tell and so far it's the only way our garbos will empty them… Anyway not sure how useful these Bunnings are but not so much for our place 🙂

    • We still use a council bin with a black lid. Same colour as the bins body.

    • +1

My rental property which is in BCC has a general waste bin so old that it pre-dates the use of red lid bins for general waste. The truck drivers just pick it up without question.
So I agree, the Garbo doesn't care or question it, they just empty it.

  • +10

I use these for storage, can leave inside or outside. Good for garden tools, camping equipment, pool gear, sports gear. Weather proof, pest proof, portable. Prefer the colored ones when on sale though.
