1440p, but looks like a good buy?

    Dat brightness.

37W power consumption on a 32" 1440p monitor is why it's clamped at 250 nits, which is fine for everything but direct sunlight…

Most people would have the thing set at 100-130 nits, maybe 150-160 if they don't have any blinds down. This isn't meant for specular highlights in HDR.

      • Yeah I don't understand the whole wanting 600nits thing, would burn your eyes overtime surely? I had a monitor with similar brightness to this one and had it turned down. I suppose if you're in direct sunlight it might be needed.

It's more about hitting at least the HDR600 standard for an LCD, which generally means it's got some kind of local dimming and decent DCI-P3 coverage, with solid black levels.

Even then, that's 600 nits peak brightness in specular highlights, not 600 across the panel. In real use a HDR 600 panel running in its SDR mode will be tend to be about 400 nits at max brightness (assuming they even let you fully drive the local dimming system), and that's probably going to get clamped at that figure or lower going forward to align with energy efficiency legislation that's coming into effect for the EU and USA (probably more countries and regions by now).

People say latch onto a fraction of that information and scream about 600 nits, but until we're making some serious strides in either efficiency or subpixel technology, I'm afraid their dream outdoor gaming setup is on hold.

  • Is this good? Thinking of getting a screen for my new gaming laptop. 14" doesn't really cut it.

    • It seems good, I would just take into consideration that it isn't curved and 32" feels huge. Also lower brightness but realistically you'll have the brightness turned down unless in direct sunlight.

      • What's so good about curved, does it fit your peripheral vision better?

        • Yeah I personally owned this monitor with 1500r curve (https://www.centrecom.com.au/msi-g32cq4-e2-32-170hz-1ms-hdr-…) and i would often forget it's curved from where I was sitting. I think with flat monitors viewing angles is usually the issue but it shouldn't be with IPS, you might just need to sit further back for it. Curved also helps with immersion. Flat has benefits too it would just be preference.
