  • Good find, only downside is the non-upgradable RAM :(

    • +4

While it is a shame, slim laptops haven't typically had upgradable RAM for well over half a decade now. Your only real option is the Framework laptop if that is important.

      • +1

There are enterprise laptops out there that are as upgradable and repairable as the Framework, minus the USB-C IO modules and the PCIe add-on port at the back of the 16 inch.

For $999 who cares, good find OP, even with 16GB

    • What are you planning to do on a thousand dollar laptop where you need more than 16 GB RAM?

  • -2

    Soldered DDR4 :/

    • +3

      What isn't these days

      • -1

Not really a reason to discount the OP's comment. God damn cabbages come with prepackaged natural packaging yet woolies and coles still wrap some in plastic and its ludicrous.

Same with soldered ram, a dimm slot is maybe 2mm thick, and probably 2 dollars to buy and assemble in bulk, extra dollar (extra PCB and SMDs required) for the cheapo ram sticks lenovo uses, charge 50 dollars more and bam sorted.

Anyways ramble over stop paying laptops with soldered parts so companies stop making them. For alternatives my lenovo L14 gen 2 (r5 5600u, 8gb, 256gb etc) refurb for 300 aud has everything replaceable except the CPU.

Companies need to stop making ewaste

Was looking at laptops around this price recently and that's a great deal.

I still think the aging MacBook Air M1 still is worth considering if you are OS agnostic, and aren't doing anything more than basic browsing, Netflix/YouTubing, workflow due to battery life and weight. Or even if you are. I have a PC desktop for gaming and tend prioritise light weight, battery and a more dumb dumb OS for my laptop-ing

    • +5

They are pretty good but an extra $300 to go from 8gb ram to 16gb is just insane.

Back in October 2020 I went from the 16gb my laptop came with to 64gb DDR4 and it cost me $252.

Just looked again on Amazon and you can get a 64gb ddr5 laptop memory kit for $270.

Apple intentionally overprice and limit the RAM on their laptops as a way to make them obsolete early, 8gb really isn't enough on a modern computer.

      • -2

I'm willing to accept that cost of ram in the m1 is a little more expensive due to it being a SOC, and not quite as straightforward as a popping in a SODIMM in a motherboard, but I agree that the cost of extra ram in Apple world is hard to swallow.

I was hesitant about getting the M1 back in 2022, because my 2014 MacBook Pro I was upgrading from also had 8gb. Seemed absurd to buy the same amount of ram config almost 10 years later.

But it comes down to use case. I have a PC desktop for computationally intensive tasks. The laptop is more a mobility machine. I do a bit of coding on it but not much more. And I hate fan noise! Yes, the m1 MacBook Air is thermally throttled due to lack of a fan. But I'm never really pushing it, even with 40 tabs open. For my use case it hasn't disappointed.

      • -3

you really don't need 16gb on the base m1 air, it's plenty powerful enough for 90% of folks day to day.

    • +3

I tried reading this on my Apple but got the rainbow wheel for 5 minutes because of the amazing 8gh ram in my system

      • -3

Why did you buy a 8gb system then?

Just sounds like another case of PEBKAC.

      • +1

        stop using chrome

  • I can see that the USB C supports Power Delivery 3, but is that power out, or in?

Can you charge this laptop itself via USB C ?

    • Did you read the description?

      • Right you are. I did but not down that low.

        "65W USB-C (3-pin) charger"

Screen on that one is not OLED

    • +7

$85 more for more storage and OLED is definitely a bargain. Also that $720 model was much inferior not the same at all

The specs look the same to me except 7530u vs 7520u. I dont think they are much diffrent.

16gb ram and 512gb ssd on both.

That one doesnt clarify if its Oled or IPS but all 3 of them were WUXGA resolution.

        • +2

4 core zen 2 vs 6 core zen 3 is definitely "much different"

the screen on the Ideapad is also 45% NTSC (66% SRGB) which doesn't sound terrible but those displays are super washed out and dull. Also only 300 nit

    • Screen is IPS and definately not as good as the listed one.

      14" WUXGA (1920 x 1200), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 45%NTSC, 300 nits, Narrow Bezel

Lenovo warranty if you buy try and get onsite warranty. I bought a lenovo slim 7 Pro X and There depot service is a joke took 5 weeks still no update for a warranty issue. Had to threaten consumer law to get an outcome now looking at refund which is a plus but the constant fight and no computer for 5 weeks is shite. Something to keep in mind with them.

    • +1

I have a thinkpad. They replaced my battery onsite before covid outside warranty. Its still going strong. The part that shipped with the laptop was made by Sanyo the replacement was by LG Chem. Part numbers were almost the same (one ending with 00 and the other 01). So it can be a hit and a miss.

      no.

      no OLED
      Older, more power hungry processor

      • +1

        Older? They are both Zen 3. It's also a higher res screen (2240 x 1400 vs 1920 x 1200)

        • excessively hi res though? 1200P is fiiiiiine for that screen size (perfect even)

        • +1

          it's a H processor vs U.

          U - 15w TDP
          H - 45w TDP

For a productivity laptop such as this, the U wins hands down for longer battery life.

is the 7840 worth hunting for?

Is there oled that is touchscreen for $999?

Looking for a general purpose laptop, this seems well but too bad no Thunderbolt to work with my TB dock 😕… so close…

    • +1

Just curious what advantage Thunderbolt has over the USB C ports that support power delivery on this model. I always thought that was what Thunderbolt was for.

  • That's a good student laptop overall, especially for this price. Centre com has a few good deal today, the lg ultra gear is very good deal as well.

  • -2

Does this model have a backlit keyboard ?

  • Does anyone know what the battery life would be like on this? I have been unable to find any reviews for this model
