  • is a safe not a single point of failure for securing valuables/identity documents
hypothetically if i were a hypothetical alleged burglar the safe would be the thing to hypothetically steal theoretically

Coat it with coconut oil, no way they're carrying that bad boy even if they break the mounts.

Not if you have multiple decoy safes around the house

    • Spoken like a thief who stole a safe.

  • Would love to hear peoples reviews of this model. $230 gets you everything you need which is an awesome entry level point, would love to ditch the capsules!

    • Same here, Youtube had some ok reviews for it. We're looking for one for the office.

I have the delonghi Dedica, which is also a 15 bar thermoblock machine. I suspect the machines are probably very similar. Although it took a while, my dedica makes decent espresso now. The main thing to note is that the machine struggles to reach a suitably high temperature (an good analysis was done by a final year mechanical engineering student at Hackaday). The upshot of this is that it is harder to brew light to medium roasts, as these require high temperatures closer to 100 degrees. Considering this machine is a bit cheaper than the dedica, i think it's reasonable to assume it's going to have the same issue.

All this means is that if you brew using high quality freshly ground dark roasts only and run a preheating cycle, you can get decent coffee from these machines which tastes quite a bit better than the pods and easily beats mccafe and most coffee chains. You will definitely need a good grinder- get the Smart Grinder Pro ($250 at JB). You can keep this when you inevitably get a better espresso machine as it is a great grinder. You can fine-tune the grind by altering both the digital fineness and also an adjustable ring inside the burr assembly.

edit: I did some more research and apparently it's a dual boiler design. I think this means that it's superior to the thermoblock in terms of high temps! Certainly have at it and let us know haha. This does mean that initial warming each morning will be a 5 min thing, instead of instant with the thermoblock.

      • Lots of valuable info there thank you! Sounds like its a goer. Do you think the aldi grinder will do the trick for in the mean time? Will definitely upgrade as time goes on, we are coffee fanatics so its inevitable, but with so many things to pay for at the moment im only really looking cause its a whole kit for a smidge over 200 bucks - which personally is the best I have seen ever.

Thanks again for the insight, really appreciate it!

You are very welcome. The aldi grinder looks just like this one- you might as well save money and get this:

I have both a blade grinder, like the Kmart and Aldi one, and a burr grinder in the breville smart grinder pro. This was a whole saga because I initially thought the Dedica was broken- i simply couldn't get drinkable espresso out of it, no matter what I did. Well, it turns out that these cheap blade grinders simply cannot achieve a fine enough grind. I created a little video to show you- the first half demonstrates the grinds from the breville burr grinder. Coffee fanatics use 30mL of espresso in 30 seconds as a rule of thumb, and the extraction here follows that reasonably well (30mL in 20 - 25s). It tastes really balanced- basically I can't tell the bitter from the sour in it. It is good enough that you can drink it straight, no need of milk.

The second half shows coffee from a blade grinder. Note that I had it spinning for over a minute, and shook it the whole time. If you feel the grounds, they are at least 2x larger than the burr grinder. It is too coarse, and the flowrate is high and the pressure is low. Basically, you get thin and bitter espresso. You can probably drink it in an iced coffee, but it really isn't good enough, and it is way too much mucking around. You'd need to weigh your grounds each time, and also time the grinding every time to get a consistant fine grind (and even then it's not fine enough). Here's the video, complete with smooth jazz/house music :)
edit: video was private, just fixed it.

@naturaldecay: Thank you! Mate you need a badge or something, a true ozbargainer. Thank you again.

  • Date is wrong, goes on Sale Saturday, not Friday.

    • Sorry, thought it was set to the 24th. Looks like it's been fixed!

  • any reviews on the camera system?

  • Remember when this was $37 @ Amazon?

  • I bought this machine yesterday and some ground coffee from aldi… My espresso is very watery and weak. Would that be due to the ground coffee being to coarse? If so what would be the best supermarket ground coffee to buy?

    • More than likely yes, due to being too coarse. preground coffee is usually only good for filter/pourover/other methods. Espresso needs very finely ground coffee.

You could go to a cafe/specialist coffee roaster and get their preground for epsresso beans. I think airjo and a few others online also do it.

Not as good as grinding fresh, but that will cost more $$$

      • Ok mate thank you. Will grab a grinder… Would it be worth trying to further grind my bought ground coffee or just buy new beans?

        • Never tried it, it could work but personally I'd just buy new beans. Aldis beans are pretty decent and relatively cheap.

Make sure you buy a grinder that can go fine enough for espresso.
