Thanks. Tired of my espresso machine, gonna switch to this.

    • +1

Me too, was looking at getting rid of my Jura and grabbing this BPB or a Moccamaster, only problem is it seems coffee machines are hard to offload unless you wanna sell them for next to nothing on Facebook

      • +1

        Meet the market

      • Your cost savings will still be worthwhile if you switch to a BPB or MM (I have an MM) over the long run!

    • Can confirm it's well worth the switch!

    • I absolutely love drinking filter coffee! So much nicer than home espresso (and vastly lower cost of entry than decent quality espresso at home).

I recommend getting onto a fortnightly or monthly filter bean subscription - it's very cost-effective compared to buying beans from your local cafe. I personally get 1.75kg of filter beans delivered every month from Marvell St Roasters in Byron (I switched from fortnightly to monthly delivery so I'd save that second postage fee).

Then get yourself a decent burr grinder (I personally love the Fellow Ode 2 grinder, and you can usually find them on Marketplace for a decent price if you're patient). Preferably a filter grinder with ghost burrs (upright burrs rather than horizontal, which means you have less grounds stuck in the machine between brews) but any moderate grinder will do.

Whatever you do, don't rely on going to a cafe, buying a 250gm bag, and having them grind it for you. Your filter coffee experience will be much more sad and you'll think it wasn't worth it…

same price in Breville website and you get 2 free coffee beans (whole or grounded). Longer delivery time though.

Only 2 beans? Not sure you'll get much out of that… ;-)

      • Lol

      • +2

Are they above or below the frank?

    • +2

you'll get the beans if you purchase from amazon too. you just have to upload your proof of purchase.

Oh yeah - Sign up for a new Breville account for an extra 10% off.

    • Amazon listing says

Receive 6 free bags of coffee plus a Shake & Take with the Oracle Jet or Oracle Touch. Enjoy up to 4 free bags with any other machine. T&Cs apply.

  • +5

That's a very expensive drip coffee maker.

    • +7

It seems not long ago they were $40 everywhere. But drip machines went out of fashion, so I guess less economy of scale.
They are very simple devices, hard to go wrong.
Except on this model, somebody added a computer and make a massive list of extra useless features that could be added in software.

    • At this price, I'd just spring for a Moccamaster as it's a more simple but is BIFL-level reliability.

  • +1

That's super expensive for this kind of coffee machine…

  • +1

Aroma Style is a third of the price. Does this make coffee three times better?

EDIT: After a bit of research this seems like a badly designed product - you can't clean the carafe lid easily so old coffee gunk stays there and adds a bit more flavour to your daily brew. https://www.reddit.com/r/Coffee/comments/m00kcm/psa_breville…

    • The carafe lid is so bad I just straight up stopped using the thermal carafe and use a chemex type carafe instead.

I will say, it's easy to clean, but just takes a while. Under the tap, flow water through, invert, and shake up and down. Then everyone and again clean it with cafetto.

No idea how it got past breville design.

  • +2

is this brevilles version of the moccamaster?

    • Yep but arguably better

      • +1

I disagree. Whether it's this BPB, Bonavita or Moccamaster, you'll certainly get great filter coffee. But while the Breville might be e-waste in 10 years, the Moccamaster could outlive us. The Moccamaster build quality is no joke.

        • +2

Moccaster fan but the quality statement is on point. Made in NL, solid. I’ve seen them used (abused) in workplaces over many years and they seem to never give up. I’d say part of this is they’re very simple electrically, nothing fancy. That’s also the downside of them, there’s almost no adjustability to suit the bean so you kinda of have to hope you can get it right with the grind alone.

They’re very expensive here in Australia though, a lot of marketing to sell them for $400+

        • +1

And if you need them serviced after 7-10 years of constant work… their servicing prices are very reasonable.

Had this. Not a fan. First one a button stopped working to auto turn on the machine. Got a replacement under warranty. Second one wouldn't get hot enough. The thermal carafe is very chunky and a pain to clean. Got a refund, bought a cheap coffee maker and happy. Wouldn't recommend.
Coffee quality wasn't any better than I get now. Lots of options to tweak, but not enough benefit to justify price with all the other issues.

    • Had one too and could never get decent coffee out of it, sold it and went back to just manual pourover. Probably just user error though.

  • weeks ago, $3x.xx Breville American coffee dripping pot machine on catch.com.au, someone post it here.

    Any difference among them?

    • -1
    • Far more control with the precision brewer.

Can control the temperature of the water which is important depending on the bean. You can also control the bloom time and the flow rate.

Probably the biggest selling point (which I don't think it's been renewed), is that it has a SCA gold cup standard. Push the button and get a good cup.

It can also do coldbrew (not my thing, but I know some people love it)

I've had this machine for the past 4(?) years.
    Still going strong.
If the slight amount of extra effort (not much) needed to clean is the thing that bothers you about this machine then stick to pods.
I love the thermal carafe, beats what a hot plate does to coffee any day.

  • +1

I guess it is an alternative if you find manual pour over too hard. I just started doing it several months ago and don't think it is very hard to master.
If you need to brew multiple cups simultaneously - then I guess it may be beneficial. Normal drippers like v60 are usually smaller.

    • Other benefit is setting it up the night before and using the auto start. Means with a busy work morning, making coffee is one less thing I don't have to do. Its a batch brewer so much easier than pourover if you have people over.

I use this during the work week, and a v60 on the weekend.

  • Pepperidge farm remembers when this model was released in 2019 for $199.

  • What I appreciate about this machine is that the carafe is isolated, ensuring that the coffee stays hot for several hours without posing a fire hazard.

  • +1

Bought my moccamaster in 2020. I've used it most days since and very good build quality. It's the kind of rare thing that you just buy one of and it lasts for ever. I wouldn't put anything Breville in the same category.

It was $325 back then https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/566519

    • That was a good price! I bought mine back in 2018 or so on a subscription plan with St Ali - it worked out that if you did the subscription for the year, you'd pay ~$250 for the MM itself, plus the cost of the beans which I was going to buy anyway.

After the 12 months, I cancelled my subscription and went with a slightly cheaper, higher quality roaster (Marvell St Roasters in Byron) for a beans subscription and now I'm making money!

      The MM is a workhorse!

  • +2

This was James Hoffman's go-to home machine for a while, I don't know if it still is, but it's fair to say it probably makes decent coffee. For this style of coffee it's either the Moccamaster or this one for me, I can't make up my mind. This one is now substantially cheaper, but the Dutch industrial design of the Moccamaster is stunning imho, whether you go the hotplate or carafe model.
After years of working in a company with 80% Italian staff and its own espresso machine in the lunchroom, I got tired of it and have enjoyed mostly french press and aeropress since. I have just added an Espro P7 and a Hario Switch into rotation with a new grinder, so I'm gonna hold off on a machine until the novelty has worn off. For $319 this is mighty tempting, though.

    • +1

I'm a huge filter coffee fan, and I really recommend the MM. It's beautiful! (after you've used up the sparkle on all your other newer kit!)

  • To anyone who owns this - I assume the inside, where the hot water travels, is plastic?

  • I can confirm this makes far better tasting coffee than the much cheaper model from breville. My brother has had his for around 5 years and no issues what so ever. I however wouldnt recommend this to anyone who is going to use supermarket beans. This is in the same league as the mocamaster yet as others have mentioned above has alot more adjustment and due to that doubt you'd get the same longevity.

I know of 2 coffee shops (brisbane) that use this primarily for their batch brew and they love it.

Also to brevilles quality i just retired my old dual boiler after 10 years with another as it ocassionally had some issues with the pump.

  • Decent machine mine lives in the cupboard in it's box now. I prefer a temp controlled kettle and v60

  • I got this! Absolutely love it and it makes such a great cup of coffee. though I don't use it a stack, the schedule starts on this can be such a nice thing (waking up to ready coffee).

Only complaints is the very breville look, and the horrible thermal carafe lid.

If I had my time again, I probably would have got a MM, but different price point, so not much use comparing.

  • Reading these comments I'm tempted to buy.. Even though I don't like filtered coffee…
