430

Time to upgrade your Deco M5s!

Tp-Link Deco X50 3 pack for $349.

This is the pick of the Deco X20, X50, X55, X60 WiFi 6 variants.

The price of WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 deco mesh systems doesn’t seem worth it.

Don’t forget to use Ethernet backhaul if you can!

Seems to be a price drop across stores, as it’s reflected at Bunnings too.

$314 if you have access to GG Commercial

    • $297 for me on GG Commercial + $9 Shipping

    • Not bad Rogue Wolf. Do Bing Lee do click and collect from FleaBay?

      • they do, also free shipping with eBay plus

    • That code only works for eBay plus members.

      • +1

you can join for $5pm still works out cheaper

          • +4

@miasommers: lol no offence, think the negs are towards ebay plus comment, agree to disagree on that, eBay Plus discounts can be pretty good at times when codes stack with sale prices, also discounted or free listings to sell on ebay, discounted shipping when selling, the perks far outweigh the yearly fee, find it way more useful than amazon, as for kogan probably last membership i'd pay for, be lucky if I check the site once a year

    • Seems like they jacked the price, it's now $469.06 with the code.

      • Sale ended, likely ow will change price shortly also

  • Someone please explain to me why wifi 6 is worth spending 200% more over wifi 5?

    • +3
    • +4

wifi 5 is not fast enough for gigabit ftth

    • +1

Much better for latency in games.

      • If you are a pro gamer any wifi is going to make your life painful. Your best spending the $400 to get a cable put in or spend it on an external wifi antenna. And if you need coverage then you need cabling to setup a 1G backhaul between the APs anyway

        • +2

          Who are pro gamers here?

          • @edfoo: Yep never suggested wifi for a professional gamer, but wifi 6 is perfectly capable for casual gamers playing online competitive games.

    • Lower latency

    • +3

In many cases it's no better, if you live alone or with maybe 1 or 2 other people, you likely won't notice the difference, also if you have a slow internet connection, that will likely be your bottleneck and not your wifi.

If you have a busy house and the kids are using multiple devices at once, that's when wifi 6 really makes a difference.

My guess is that if you're using wireless backhaul (ie the Deco nodes are connected wirelessly), wifi 6 will be better there too because all the traffic has to be retransmitted and dealing with that congestion is a strength of wifi 6.

      • +1

Well said, people just be buying shit because it's the latest and greatest without even knowing if it suits their needs.

    • Only worth it if you got gigabit Ethernet at home and you can afford the rip off prices of 1000Mbit NBN plus new devices that uses wifi 6

  • +1

X55 3 pack is also $349 on Amazon Au.

    • +4

FWIW I spent hours (literally) researching the difference between the X50, X55 and X60 and they’re all so similar, but apparently the X50 is the go. Would absolutely love to hear how the X55 is a better buy. So interesting, and confusing!

      • +2

Why is X50 the better choice?

      • X60 can handle 6 simultaneous streams while x50 can only handle 4, that's the number of devices it can route data to at any given moment, it greatly increases speed over networks with a lot of devices all making demands at once. Not sure about x55 though, couldn't find much on that.

        • The X60 is about twice as expensive though

          • @miasommers: I guess for high traffic networks, some might consider it worth it to pay double for 50% more streams, especially if you have a fast connection that you'd like to take advantage of.

Expensive and not very effective coffee bean canisters. :(

    • I thought these were Airscape canisters lol.

  • +1

If you can use Ethernet backhaul you'd get 3 of these instead. Even 4 is cheaper than this deal.

Most people use mesh networks specifically because Ethernet backhaul isn't a viable option.

Also, most people don't have PoE switches to power remote APs, nor do they have the knowledge of how to do so effectively.

      • Yep 100% ..I'm in IT and I use mesh because I don't have the cabling at home to do it any other way, I either have to cable myself or spend a lot more than the cost of a mesh system to get the cabling done… So far it's ok, definitely have alot more issues in my TP-Link mesh than I did with Netgear Orbi's … And the issue is always random stuff happening like wifi connected but not internet on the device etc…

Anyway ok products but your YMMV unfortunately - edit: I have the deco XE75

        • Why did you choose the XE75? Seems a lot more expensive for marginally bettter performance. Maybe because of lack of Ethernet backhaul?

          • @miasommers: XE75 is WiFi 6E, if you can utilize it, the difference is not marginal, it's massive. 6E includes a new, 6Ghz frequency band that is much faster if you have devices that support it. I can get very close to 1Gbps download on a single device with my phone connected to my XE75.

          • @miasommers: It’s only $500 at TGGC, wouldn’t say a lot more expensive and 6GHz is dedicated to back haul.

          • @miasommers: It was definitely due to lack of being able to use Ethernet backhaul, and I use the 6ghz dedicated purely for backhaul.

At the time I bought it it wasn't too bad a price and I had a bunch of vouchers for TGG to use. Otherwise this is more than enough for most…I just have a truck load of devices so I tend to go a little over kill just in case.

      • A lot of people say you can DIY cat6 whatnot cabling but in reality to do it right and drilling holes everywhere and getting all those without impacting your insurance then become silent.

        Mesh network still works fine.

Its only Wifi 6 and Gigabit Ethernet when people want cabling. However if you can already cable around the house then there's no real need for mesh network unless your Wifi range isnt accommodating

Technology will change will wait til one day no need for cabling at all for backhaul with better performance

      • No matter what router you have and where it is placed, you will have poor speeds and potentially even dropouts in large homes and properties. There's just too many walls and too much distance. So for large families, mesh WiFi is also a necessity unless you want to have several different WiFi networks (ewww).

We have Ethernet backhaul with all of our M5's, and this allows for >100Mbps speeds everywhere (every corner of every room) in the large, brick and concrete slab property, and even 90% of the block (walled front yard, back yard, garage and workshop). Devices that can use >100Mbps are all wired via switches.

    • +1

Sometimes backhaul is the only way.

I live in a large house with 30cm - 40cm thick stone walls. Full wi-fi mesh coverage had been a mystical holy grail, the pursuit of which has cost me a motza over the years.

On the advice of the many experts; "add more nodes", "what you have is crap" and "get TPNETGENDA mesh" AND "Get AXnnnn" AND "get WIFI 6". On and on it went.

Adding more nodes, incidentally, without backhaul is asking for diminishing returns.

Talk about the Big Mac promising so much and delivering so little….

Anyhoo, ignoring all and sundry, of the six nodes (AC1800) around the house I brought backhaul to three. The wifi issue is now resolved. I have great wi-fi cover throughout the house and at least within a couple of metres outside.

    • this is ax the product you linked above is AC. Night and day difference from a latency perspective. Axis superior.

Secondly these also functions as a router, vpn client/server all built in.

  • Cheap same price as X20

  • Each node has 3 Ethernet ports

  • +1

Jokes on you, I can't afford a house so the bundled router/modem is adequate

    • Haha 😂😂😂

  • Does it have proper QOS and device bandwidth controls?

    • +1

      No

    • +1

There's no device bandwidth control in the app which is annoying. There is QOS where you can select multiple devices which are supposed to always have the highest bandwidth.

You can though create a guest network and put a bandwidth limit on that, which I'm considering doing to put all my non-essential devices on. But again it's just a single limit over all the devices, not individual limits.

      • Thanks Gents. No sale.

        • +1

I also have the x50, the controls are a joke. Very basic set of options in the App, no real web interface as you can't do much in it. For most basic users it's fine though, you aren't missing anything. It's just people who like to control/setup the network properly or tweak things can't.

I also have a printer that doesn't show on the network at all on the router. It has a IP and works ok when printing but is an invisible rouge device as far as the network can see.

Other than that I can't fault it, really good mesh system with great reception even though x50 doesn't have the High Gain antenna's. I have noticed all devices in the smart house responding quicker. Upgraded from a Archer AX1800 and AX1800 range extenders.

If you are used to proper routers with all the settings I hear ASUS is the brand for a good mesh system with settings advanced users want/need.

  • Hmmm, this or wait for the XE75's to come back in stock?

I have two pending stock for 379. They are wifi 6e

  • Worth upgrading from Google nest non-pro?

Can I still keep my google home automation?

    • If you're not having issues with the Google mesh it's really not worth upgrading.

I believe Google home automations are cloud based so you shouldn't lose anything if you change routers

  • Should I wait for this deal again everyone? In theory x68 should be superior to x50 no?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/811141

    • Based on the specs, X68 can double the concurrent client devices comparing to X50, so x68 mainly for more active users with same speed of x50, although max speed is a bit lower.

    • X68 is better if using WiFi backhaul and it has an extra Ethernet port.
If you're using Ethernet backhaul and don't have a stack of concurrent high bandwidth users you won't notice much difference.

  • Anyone know the difference between this and the x55?

    • I choosed X55 last time based on my research, for the hardware mainly the CPU is different. X50 has quite a bit of faulty rate and heat issues, so I choosed X55. But TPlink has habbit of changing internal hardware with different version, that make it hard to compare if not knowing the version number.

  • +1

I've experimented with a tonne of routers in my time and much to my surprise, the little beast that is the Netgear Nighthawk MK62 is easily the best bang for buck. $150 for a 2-pack was insanely good value.

  • FYI the Amazon US has x55 3 pack at $308.70 deliveried, if you don't mind the us plug.

    • Not worth mucking around with warranty, adaptors, having wrong channels/power levels and potentially breaking the law for $40.

      • Huh ? What law are you breaking ?? And what different channels / power levels are you talking about ??

        • We aren't the US (although sometimes it looks like it.)
We have different radio frequency allocations, electrical certifications, etc. etc.
Using equipment that doesn't meet our standards might be illegal

  • I have 55s and tried to find the difference to these. After much searching I'm none the wiser.

  • I have been looking for mesh WiFi system for a couple of months u came across these on Amazon, however I am not sure if the price is worth it.
I coming from using a Telstra modem with a tenda range extender that was cheap. The Telstra is in family room which is 10-15 m away with 2-3 gyprock walls. My master bed is 15 m with 3-4 walls.
I was considering if there are any cheaper options…
    And came across [this]. (https://amzn.asia/d/amkPkiT)

I am unsure how this compares and if it is a decent upgrade for me for a third the price.

    • What's your Internet speed?
Do you have a home server or anything like that that clients would be accessing over the local network?

      • @McFly I have 50mbps from more that I got through OzB as well… And no servers.
Very basic work, streaming and entertainment is the major use.

        • +2

Don’t bother and waste your money then

  • I thought TP-Link was a brand that network savvy people frown upon on with their inconsistent firmware and security issues. There seems to be a lot of TP-Link fans on OzB.

    • You thought wrongly. I have owned a few TP-Link modems, routers and the Deco m5 mesh, they have been working fine. Only some snobbish gamers want ASUS branded computer peripherals.

    • For a while when they first started they had a lot of problems.
They are a lot better now. Certainly not perfect, but they get the job done.

  • I hate these. I had so many problems with the x50 Poe. The app is rubbish and the units needed to be restarted daily.

    • You have some kind of problem there. I know that's obvious, but I mean maybe a faulty unit, maybe PoE incompatibility of some sort, etc.?
The same goes for the app as I said above - at the beginning it had a lot of problems but now it's fine. Again, not perfect and not best app in the world but it works.

    • so many problems with the x50 Poe

So far no problem from users.

  • I just bought one from bunnings, same price tho. But I gotta say, this device is way better than my old one. I'm actually getting full speed everywhere in my house, it wasnt possible before. I am really happy I bought this. I also got heaps of Smart home devices and i can connect it all to a different network, while having it isolated from other devices on network.

    I would recommend this product.

    • That’s great. Eat did you upgrade from?

      • I had Netgear Nighthawk X4S D7800

It was good, but not as good this new mesh network, QoS works way better too, I can also plug Ethernet from my mesh satellites and I’m still getting full speed, before the wifi barely reached my room.

  • +1

How would these compare to Mercusys Halo H80X's ? I've been eyeing off the 3 pack from Amazaon UK for $243

I really only Need 2 unit for my house so possibly looking to flip one of them as well to bring costs down.

  • Anyone in Melbourne want to split a 3 pack? I only need 1 more. I’ll just pick one up on marketplace otherwise
