This one is a rare 4G modem equipped model, with FHD screen at 400 nits (maximises battery life, though obviously not the highest quality colour reproduction unlike the customisable OLED model).

Together with a 13% cashback, the price will end up being just over $1820.

Part number: 21HM0019AU

Note - both the coupon code and 13% cashback from Cashrewards will disappear after 27/2/2024 23:59:59

  • Hmm, trying to get the best value laptop (no hard games) — want it to last 20 years for basic stuff (shopping/non-intensive games/couple of little programming project here and there), am I dreaming?

I would recommend looking at the specs of a computer made 30 years ago, and assume that it's still functioning now

      • Good point, still have one from 10 years ago and I don't use it anymore since it is far too slow!

        • ~30 years ago I had a chance to use one at my dad's office, with Windows 95 - a first GUI native OS, a giant leap from Windows 3.1. At school we were still using floppy drives (the 5" one is bendable, like the OLED screens these days). LAN might exist there (I didn't know), but no one knew about Internet.

~20 years ago: my boss had a portable computer (an IBM Thinkpad), something truly portable. We felt lucky when we got 17" CRT displays. A LCD (19-20", I guess) costed US$3-4K. My senior colleague had a newly released Nokia 6610 with the game "Bounce"

          Nostalgic

    • Your best bet is to buy one of those 8th gen i5 refurb Toshiba models, use it until it's unbearably left behind - call it maybe 5 years - and then repeat the process with the 2029 equivalent, which will be a 13th gen i5. Your cost of owning a basic computer will be about a dollar fifty per week, which is so cheap it's basically free.

Source: Me. I'm in IT, I've been running a household's PC needs on this model for about eight years. Buy 'good enough' cheap, sell it after a few years, get back about half what I paid, rinse and repeat. Four people costing about a dollar a week each. Easy.

    4cell battery, 14 inch screen…$2100. ($1,800 after coupon discounts)

Curious as to what kind of laptop user this is targeted at?

Give it a few years and these will be back, refurbished for $399 :-)

That price with no decent vidya card?

Have a x1 carbon gen 9 can't fault it. Good business laptop.
I'd prob be more keen on getting a 7840u deal than this intel chipset.

    • I second that. Mine is a gen 9 two and still going strong. I keep looking at buying a new one for tax reasons but it's hard to justify replacing a laptop that still hasn't missed a beat…
The only issue is that the paint around the edges comes off in some spots.

  • Is ultra portable machine worth double the cost of similar spec heavier machine?

If you regularly travel/commute and carry a laptop - definitely.

If it's mostly stationary, it's usually not worth paying the premium.

Sweet spot might be the top model but one or two generations older (e.g. X1 Carbon Gen 9 on clearance).
