Where to Purchase MS Office from?

I am wondering where people are buying MS Office for a cheaper price these days? I haven't had to install one for some years but I am in need now. Once I purchased it from eBay but their login only lasted for a couple of months and then access was cancelled. The seller never replied back either. Is there any reliable place from where anyone purchased MS Office recently? I will appreciate recommendations. Thanks in advance.

I use saveonit, they're usually the cheapest legitimate seller around - https://www.saveonit.com.au/searches?searchbox=office+365

Office 2021 is what you're after, it's the standalone product. Again saveonit are a good way to go as they're $177

You can search cd key sites and get it cheap, but don't be surprised if it doesn't activate properly or you can't redownload in the future or something.

Otherwise, your workplace might offer a discount copy - https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/workplace-discount-program

$177 for one install on one PC? What happens when my shitty laptop dies?

Guess I'll just stick with Office 2010

            @larndis: I like MS Office 10
Been usung it for 10 years
            Does the job just fine.

Any improvements since then make no difference to the average Joe User.

But otherwise if you want something lightweight but more up to date try FreeOffice from Softmaker
Its fully compatible for MS Office and the best FREE alternative.
But it only contains the basic 3 office programs.

There is also MS Office 365 on the Web which is FREE

            See here for FreeOffice:

@larndis: I have Office 2019. When I changed computer I reactivated it on the new computer. Wasn't smooth and it failed, but I raised it via chat with Microsoft. Known bug on 2019, we'll fix it they said. Took them a day, but all good again.

          • +2

@larndis: You will be able to install in on your next PC and use the same product key. You won't have to buy it again.

          • +2

@larndis: When you purchase a "retail" Office license, it's typically for 1 PC. That 1 PC can be changed, just can't have it installed/use it on multiple PCs simultaneously.

However, an OEM license (typically) cannot be transferred.

So you want a copy of office, not 365 - some people do not realise you can still purchase office as a one-off software purchase without all the 365 fluff.

It seems to cost over $200 via legit Australian stores but as low as $15 or so for a software key - how reputable these keys are and how long they would work for are anyone's guess.

@HeWhoKnows: It gives a very stripped down version of Office programs - fine if you are just after the basics, but much functionality is not there.

            • @singlemalt72: yep!
The Free MS Office 365 programs are basic and also can only be used online
And most people on home computers just require the basics.
But I've also given several other options to choose from

        • I’ve bought one of those grey market keys (I think that’s how people refer to them) and to activate it you have to link it to a Microsoft account (outlook, hotmail etc) and it’s been working perfect since. I think I paid about $40aud for my copy.

Unfortunately, I need it for one laptop only so it won't justify the price but it's a great option if I had to share it among multiple laptops.

          • +2

@virhlpool: saveonit is usually the cheapest then. I've used them in the past…

Officeworks should price beat for a further 5% off…

            • @jv: Nope. SaveOnIt isn’t the same. They only email you a code, where as Officeworks has a physical card. Also the model number doesn’t match SaveOnIt’s product

              • @azzaisawesome:

                Nope. SaveOnIt isn’t the same.

Officeworks did a price beat for me on Office 365 2 years in a row before I got a better, ongoing subscription offer…

How did you get that price jv?

          • +1

@wei13: an old corporate discount for microsoft membership,

seems to now be permanent in my account.

check with your HR department if your organisation qualifies…

        • I've not seen this price.. how are you getting this?

        • Do the 6 family members share your OzBargain login as well? Explains the abnormally high post count.

        • I will avoid subscriptions everywhere I can.

Before 365 Microsoft used to have great deals through employers anywhere from $30-$60 for a license that didn’t expire.

          • @ColtNoir:

from $30-$60 for a license that didn’t expire.

They didn't get updated with new versions though and didn't come with 1TB for each of 6 users.

The cloud storage alone is worth the price of subscription if you have a look at home much Google and Apple charge for this.

All cheap Microsoft product keys are being illegally, without exception. If Microsoft realises that the product key is being used illegally they will blacklist it. This doesn't always happen. If I does you could just buy another dodgy license, although it's always best to spend more and buy a legal license.

        • They're all corp/old msdn keys. Ie from a large 1000+ laptop company.

One day they'll audit their keys, or ditch M365 and your key will stop working.

        • because they are resold enterprise or MSDN keys. Once MS realise they are being abused they get blocked. if you are lucky that doesn't happen

    • Stumbled on these folks myself & sfsg across three seperate devices

    • I have bought about 20 various Microsoft keys from here.
Besides from annoying phone activation for some, I’ve never had a problem or had any cancelled.

  • +7

Do you need it to be installed locally? You can use Word, Excel etc legally and free if you use the web versions (via Microsoft/Hotmail/"live" account).

If you're just doing the occasional presentation or resume it's adequate. Of course locally installed progams feels better, but free is a pretty compelling price.

    • +4

      • Which features would a typical user rely on that isn't there? (Genuine question)

              @kiitos:

              Yes please

Certainly! When it comes to Microsoft Excel Online, there are some features that are not available compared to the desktop version. Here's a list of those missing features:

              1. Named Ranges: You cannot create or edit named ranges in Excel Online.
              2. Macros (VBA): Excel Online does not support macros or VBA (Visual Basic for Applications).
              3. Cell Notes: While you can display notes created with desktop Excel, you cannot create new cell notes directly in Excel Online.
              4. Links to Other Spreadsheets: Excel Online lacks the ability to link to other spreadsheets.
              5. Text Rotation: You can't rotate text within cells in Excel Online.
              6. Cell, Workbook, or Sheet Protection: Unlike the desktop version, Excel Online does not offer protection for cells, workbooks, or sheets.
              7. Checkboxes: These are not available in Excel Online.
              8. Solver and Other Add-ins: Excel Online does not support add-ins like Solver.
              9. Editing or Rearranging Conditional Formatting Rules: You cannot edit or rearrange conditional formatting rules in Excel Online.

Keep in mind that Excel Online is a free web-based platform, similar to Google Sheets, and it's designed for collaboration and basic spreadsheet tasks. If you require the features mentioned above, you may need to use the desktop version of Excel ¹²³. 📊🔍

That's a rip off. They are selling volume license keys that are not meant to be sold individually, just like random websites selling cheap keys. You can buy the same dodgy keys elsewhere for a fraction of the price.

      • so Is it a rip off because it's not legal, or because it will not work (or eventually be cancelled)?

        • It's a rip off, because you can buy dodgy product keys elsewhere for under $10 AU.

Its both. It is not legal and for a dodgy key it is a complete rip off.

If you want a good free alternative, try Libre-office. Works very well, and will open any MS Office Proprietary files - .docx, .xlsx etc.
Just don't forget in 'tools' —> 'options' —> 'load/save—> 'General'' to set default save to MS Office files, instead of Libreoffice file types. ie. for Libreoffice Writer (Word equivalent) set default save as '.docx' instead of default '.odt'

    • +2

I use this too. Their version of Excel had some non intuitive behaviour that can lead to problems, though.

Copying and pasting rows is definitely clunky compared to Excel. And pasting rows can lead to a particular value being pasted instead of the original formula if you don't choose the right options.

    • If you want a good free alternative, try Libre-office.

Might as well use the free Office 365 online version then…
