JV - would you prefer to be able to go and visit the farm and choose your particular chicken to be slaughtered, prepared to your liking, and then served with the free chips and gravy?

How much is the Whole Roast Chicken ?

    • -1

i bought a whole chicken from this place like 10 years ago. Used to be a solid flat 10 dollar but now I would estimate around $14-$15

      • How would you say their roast chickens compare to the ones at coles/woolworths in terms of size/content?

        • +3

          Their TV ad said $12.95.

        • +5

I bought one last week, I think it was $12.95. About the same size as a Woolies chicken but much nicer, especially the stuffing.

        • Thanks, haven't tried big red in years, might give it a go.

        • Mmmm stuffing!! I'm drooling already.

          Alright, that's lunch sorted tomorrow.

          ….

          ….

          I'm not fat I swear!! :P

        • Costco whole chickens are only $9.95 and much larger.

        • Not to mention the bonus antibiotics you get with it :)

(That was in reply to Costco)

  • About $14 if my memory serves me right

  • +2

    Woolies chicken FTW

    • yep, much better than Coles, although the best supermarket one i've tried came from Supa IGA

  • Red Rooster roast chickens much better than Coles roast chickens.

Better quality control, much greater chance of getting a fresh one, and slightly more expertise in preparing them !

    • +5

      "Better quality control"

How does that work? The 16yr kid working at Red Rooter washes his hands more than the 16yr kid working in Coles deli? What numbers have you crunched to come to the conclusion of "better quality control"?

      • +4

The 16yr kid working at Red Rooter washes his hands

        Thank goodness!

  • Have to disagree with you boomerpro and jv. red duck first then Coles then woolies. Nicer stuffing in that order as well.

    • +1

Wait! You disagree with our JV?! SILENCE! I KEEL you! =)

It depends on who is preparing the chicken and cooking it too - it will vary store to store. Stuffing is the key to flavour too, it has to be light and fluffy so it doesnt come out like a small ball of wet mush, and it absorbs juices and expands enough to fill the cavity and infuse flavour back into the chicken. I can get a good cooked chook from the local IGA or woolies one day and it is shit the next. If the stuffing is still moist but not hard or saturated then the chicken will have a must nicer taste (and moister breast meat), but if you cut it open and the stuffing doesn't touch the sides, it will taste very plain compared to normal :(

This guy knows his sh….wait, chicken.

      • +3

Oh yeh it has taken me places you wouldn't believe…like my hand up a chooks bum more often than I care to remember :P

        • I can confirm, I am not chooks.

    • Hey AJW! If you read this, maybe you can help…

There used to be a takeaway chicken store in Mayfield (Newcastle) NSW. Asian folks who made the most delicious BBQ chicken I've ever tasted. They would rub some kind of herb mix inside the chicken. I think it had sage and cloves but can't remember much else. The chicken meat was delicious, and you wanted to eat the herbs inside but they were overpowering and kind of bitter to taste them directly.

Anyway, they closed down and I did not taste that taste again for years - until I stopped when passing through Goulburn. There's a kind of dingy chicken place on the opposite side of the main street to the main supermarket building - an Aussie woman serving, but Asian cook. I didn't taste the chicken until I'd left, or I would have asked him.

Do you have any idea what may have been in that mix?

      • +1

The mix we used was diced onion, mixed herbs (sage tarragon & rosemary & a little salt). Add all these to rough breadcrumbs then add splash of water, mix softly, add another splash & repeat until it is moist and springs back if u lightly press it. Don't cram in too hard info cavity, but as firm as possible to fill it completely :)

        • Thanks, I'll try that… Tarragon… That could explain the bitterness.

The first shop I mentioned didn't have stuffing. Just a "rub" on the inside of the chicken. I think there was some kind of… cloves maybe? (They weren't in their powdered form - still woody "stick-things".) The mix was almost grey inside the chicken. It looked disgusting and was way overpowering to eat directly, but the meat was delicious.

The Goulburn shop did have stuffing, but the whole chicken had that same kind of taste. Lots of sage I think.

        • I think you could experiment easily, rubbing the cavity would work in theory, but the stuffing gives you the bonus that you can eat it too :)

  • +4

There's a massive grey area when it comes to ordering cooked chicken imo. They advertise them as a whole chook but keep the heads all to themselves

    • +2

I don't think this is a bargain at all seeing as we're not getting the whole thing.

Time to fire off another letter to the ACCC…

      • -4

Oh I did actually, In no un-certain terms I said what a brutal waste of the tax-payers money this disgusting exploit is.

And they replied telling me just to calm down and enjoy a delicious dim-sim.

  • -1

Plenty of red rooster posts here —> http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/82629
On the other hand 9 pieces of chicken from KFC (almost a whole chicken) + 2 large side is roughly $15. So this is alright if you into roast chicken.

    • For this deal though you don't have to wait until Tuesday.

  • +3

This'll go well with my Krug Grande Cuvee

    • +4

I'll be cutting my Krug with Sprite to make it go further.

  • What the BLEEP… The only day I decide to buy a whole roast chicken from Red Rooster because Coles and Woolies had run out I end up getting ripped off too… Why didn't they throw in the large chips and gravy without me needing to ask. Meh I'm over it now, I remembered why I never buy RR, it tastes like crap.

    • +3

It tastes crap ever since they sold all their rotisseries and went the fast oven bake method instead.."back in my day we had to cook the damn things for 95 minutes - now they are under 45 minutes?"

      • Chips at red rooster were always one of the best though, competititive taste to KFC chips or might be even better!.

      • +1

We really need a roast chicken chain here in Australia. I wish Boston Market (formerly Boston Chicken) or Kenny Rogers Roasters would open up here. I'm sick of having to go to "main street" chicken places that rip you off and then struggling to find a parking space because of traffic. Is it so difficult to build stand-alone restaurants like they have in the USA with big parking lots in the front?

        • screw roast chicken, charcoal is the way to go. lebanese style.

        • With the garlic sauce and pickled veggies!

        • Huh? A chicken in a really ugly cicada-reflective Nissan with a blow-off valve!?

        • Nissan?? I don't get it.

        • +1

he kinda missed on that one. what he meant was: bright metallic purple excel with bling rims and bonnet with intake (but no turbo…..obviously HAHAHA) oh and super low body kit.

what i meant was: marinated and charcoal cooked to perfection. with some garlic sauce and chips. tabouli too.

        • you forgot the 'thub-woofers'

  • -8

always available if you ask at my local. so no special deal for me…

  • +1

Does Red rooster's has stuffing too? Never actually tried their whole roast chickens before.

  • +3

I always have trouble getting Red Pigeon to honour deals or coupons, so I've basically given up. They must scour the globe for the least intelligent, dull witted drones they can get too…makes a trip to McD's look like a Mensa convention! :o

If I'm gonna pay full price I'll grab a woolies chook or the local Newy chook chain Henny Penny - who do excellent fried chicken & the roast chooks are way bigger than the bantams they have at RR! Actually, come to think of it the roast vegies are nicer too…bah, now I'm hungry! ;)

    • +1

+1 for Henny Penny. Go Knights!

      • HP's chips are also significantly better than either RR or KFC. Make sure that you always ask for them to be freshly cooked too…I learned that trick from an old girlfriend who used to work there! :)

    • Pfft… Only thanks to the amazing level of MSG they put in. More than KFC even. Don't ever eat their microwaved chicken rolls. Three times in row the Wallsend store gave me food poisoning until I realised what it was. (Slow learner over here.)

Oops - sorry - that's MSG in the fried pieces. Oh - and their gravy is disgusting. I think it's just brown gelatine and flour. It goes solid even OUT of the fridge.

      • +1

Honestly, if you're worried about added MSG then don't eat out…period! Cookie Monster says fried chicken is a sometimes food! ;)

You're right about the HP gravy though; it's not as good as KFC gravy, but it is on par with RR gravy IMHO.

  • Are there no red roosters in inner Sydney? I used the store locator on their website and the closest stores are in the airport…

    • They're mainly out west, the ones in the east/inner city Sydney are usually in shopping centres and close before I can get dinner

  • Henny Penny in newcastle is pretty shit. Charcoal Charlies in some sydney suburbs is pretty damn awesome.

    • charcoal charlies is the maccas of charcoal chicken. head over to western sydney and find some lebanese charcoal chicken

    • Ok Olly, do tell…why do you reckon HP is shit?

      I can't comment on Charlie's, I've never tried it…whenever I'm in Steak'n'Kidney I'm not usually chasing chooks! ;)

  • for the free chips and gravy when you buy a whole roast chicken, it says dinner special?

so what time is it dinner so you can get the free chips and gravy?

  • Thanks for this OP.

Just thought I would comment, the Red Rooster store in Belconnen, ACT is probably the WORST fast food store in Australia. I've given it a few chances, but the food is always cold/crap and I'm 99% sure they keep old food and just re-heat it. One time I decided to complain (I usually just deal with it) and they took it back, threw it in the microwave and gave it back to me 30 seconds later!

The store in Wanniassa, ACT is much better though so I will be claiming this :)

    Cheers.

    • If you're in Canberra why are you going to RR? I miss Kingsleys every.single.day. since I left

  • Just bought the ad says before 2pm but had no problems a second ago at almost 3.

edit: small line but is literally taking ages lol (drive though)

no potato in the gravy? what is this lol. Chips are only nice to eat alone and gravy and chicken just taste weird!

    • +1

Where does it say before 2pm?

    • +1

yeah noticed just gravy.. should had gone pizza hut instead and get yummy wings for free with your order.

picked mine up around 730pm asked beforehand. No problemo ^^.. lol polished off the chips myself.. will ask family to help finish off the chicken and gravy

    • +1

Its all day not a lunch offer… yeah shame its not potato and gravy but still pretty good nonetheless

      • Add your own potato, it's not that hard :-)

  • This was still valid at the Mosman Park RR. I didn't see any signage and quietly asked if it was still valid. I acted like I had seen it advertised on TV.
