nbn Proposes New Faster Speed Options for HFC and FTTP

According to a few news articles like: https://www.9news.com.au/technology/nbn-plans-to-supercharge…

NBN propose to upgrade internet speeds at no extra cost to the retailer. What do you think this means for us consumers? At the moment, I am on a 50/20 plan for $75 / month. I am hoping we finally see a reduction in internet costs!

Have had FTTP for 12+ years, about time the higher speeds became affordable.

  • Should be on 1000/40, more like 700/40. Used to get basically 1000/40, but tpg getting scabby AF.

    • Base Plans should be

      300/100 - $49
      500/100 - $69
      750/200 - $89
      1000/450 - $99

      • Are these just random prices or is there any revenue/cost analysis done to get to those numbers?

        • Random prices and speed tiers.

          • @Twix: Yeah predicted. I ran a RSP in NZ but might be different here.

            • @memez: Oz prices and speeds are different because of the multi-tech used. If we had have stuck with ~93% FTTP coverage the prices would be like that.

100/20 for $75 sounds good to me :)

  • any love for FTTB or FTTN?

    • FTTB and FTTN won't be getting these speeds.

nbn are doing FTTN to FTTP and FTTC to FTTP upgrades. Check here.

      • What about apartment blocks that uses FTTB?

        • FTTB won't be upgraded to FTTP right now. Maybe in a couple years.

        • NBNco are upgrading apartments from FTTB to full fibre. Talk to your body corporate manager.

          • @Chaddy: Do you have a website I can show them to use as a reference??

            • @Homr: The body corporate manager will need to contact NBNco directly requesting for the inforstructure to be upgraded from FTTB to FTTP, might also help if they also get a quote from Opticomm as well.
As this will force NBNco to act quicker as Opticom like to do exclusive deals. But NBNco will be better in terms of overall service.

              • @Chaddy: Thanks but bad news

Unfortunately, your building isn’t currently eligible for nbn full fibre through this program.

                • @Homr: See if Opticomm is already available it is in some buildings.

          • @Chaddy: FTTB is not included in the current free FTTP upgrades.

Only eligible buildings with FTTN and FTTC can be upgraded to FTTP.

            • @Twix: Yeah aware of that, their is a form that body corporate managers can fill out though.
But NBNco probably would charge per unit still. I suspect this program will be ramped up over the next year or to as Starlink and the private fibre operators are being noticed as a threat to NBN.

              • @Chaddy: The linked body corp form does nothing for FTTB. FTTB to FTTP paid upgrade through technology choice is temporarily turned off.

Yeah I doubt there will be any FTTB to FTTP until at least 2026 because of the FTTN/FTTC to FTTP ramp up.

@Twix: Given its the federal government we are talking about nothing surprises me.
That TV show Utopia is meant to be a comedy show and not an instruction manual on how government in this country should be run, sometimes I think they use that show as a blue print.
Lets just say its quite realistic.

  • TLDR: when will this happen ? I am on 250/20 on HFC

edit: skimmed through and it looks like December 2024, ew!

It will be a year or so at least before HFC and the new FTTP speeds are introduced.
What I can also reveal is that Skymuster is being dumped completely and being replaced with 5G fixed wireless as NBN Co is under threat from Starlink in regional areas but you didn't hear that from me.
The new 5G services will deliver over 100Mbps speeds to remote regional areas.

Actually I should clarify Skymuster isn't being totally dumped but they are replacing it in a lot of areas with fixed wireless.
