Amazon DE have got a Prime only deal going for the Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer. I first read aboout them here. Looks like the going price is $49.95. Hmm, the ones we seem to have in Australia are the BR60. The BR90 has an optional light so you can use it in the dark so I guess it's better? If you can find 2 other qualifying items, you get an extra 10% off. I managed to find 2 other items and it brought the price down aboout ~$6. For whatever reason if you add 3 of the Beurer BR 90s to your cart the total is $74.66 or $24.89 each. I kinda feel shafted now but I guess I wanted the other things anyway. Please let me know if you can't bring up the 3 for $74.66 and I'll remove that part from the deal.

About this item
  • Relief of symptoms: thanks to the targeted heat effect of the ceramic heating plates, itching and swelling of the affected area are relieved and symptomatics are improved
  • Pleasant healing process: the heat development of the electric bite healing accelerates the healing of bites, the itching decreases and the healing process is often perceived as comfortable
  • 2 programmes: from two different programs, you can choose the right heat level for use in people with sensitive skin and for regular use in mosquito bites
  • No chemical substances: the use of the stitch healer works by means of heat and without chemical substances, the use of the chemical-free insect bite healer is also suitable for pregnant women
  • Use in the dark: thanks to the switchable light, the bite healer can also be used precisely in the dark, the compact design is ideal for outdoor trips such as camping or barbecuing

According to the manual here it looks like it uses 2 AAA batteries which should be included.

Edit: Added some extra info as this version is the BR90 vs the BR60 that is at JBHifi etc.

Edit 2: If you don't see the discount being applied, keep going through to payment and the discount should be there when you try to pay.

Edit 3: Thanks to floraposte Amazon DE have got a deal going for the Beurer BR 90 again. You may need Prime for the prices (and to avoid delivery fee) but they are as follows:

1 x BR90 = $36.60
2 x BR90 = $62.22 ($31.11 each) (Prime only ?)
3 x BR90 = $82.35 ($27.45 each) (Prime only ?)

If you are a non Prime member and the prices are not as above please let us know. I do think the multibuy discount is for Prime members only but I am unable to check.

  • How would this compare to something like Soov Bite gel?

    • Bite creams usually work by anesthetising the skin.

The theory behind this device (which seems to be backed by some science) is that the heat breaks down the proteins in the bite venom so they don't have the same effect on your body.

  • reminds of of those mozzie clickers which zap the itch/pain away.

  • thanks OP, bought 3.

  • If anyone in se Melb wants to split, I'd be down

  • I use to use the tip of a lit cigarette and bring it within a few mm of the bite for a brief moment. Instant relief afterwards.

    • Okay, taking up smoking now…

  • Do mosquitoes sting or bite?

My partner gets very itchy from sandfly bites, so we have tried many heat options. (She used to use the metal spoon dipped in hot water approach)

IMO these anti itch heat tools play it safe and don't get hot enough to be very effective, but seem to work better for some people compared to others.

An alternative, cheaper option is a compact powerful torch. Place it on the area and turn it on briefly. Start with a low brightness setting and work up once you get a feel for it. The light penetrates through the skin before being absorbed, so gives a deeper heat than just surface conduction heating.

The downside is you need to regulate the timing yourself. And it is easy to go too hot, or full the torch away and shine it in your eyes :P

Also, heat works in two scenarios. It helps temporarily disrupt the receptors that are signaling there is an itch. The heat tools like this deal work ok at this. A torch gives hotter and deeper heating though.

The other scenario is using the heat to denature the proteins in whatever bit / stung you. The heat tools don't get hot enough in my experience to help. A torch can be quite effective.

The effectiveness of this approach does vary depending on proteins. EG, marine life (jellyfish, stingrays) live in an environment where heat is not an issue, so never evolved heat resistant venom proteins. Snakes and many insects have venom that is much more resistant to heat.

In my experience, immediate heat very rapidly removes jellyfish sting pain. Bee sting pain reduces well too. It's less effective on paper wasps, and has no effect on jumping screen ants.

For flies (march flies, sandflies, mozzies) the itch is caused by your bodies later response to the saliva proteins, which the insect uses to stop blood clotting. I have found if heat is applied immediately then the later itching is avoided. But even a few minutes delay in heat means it will itch later. This suggests to me that the heat helps break down some of the proteins in the saliva before they have had a chance to interact with your body. The high, deep torch heat works well for this. The heat tool contact heating not so much.

I got an alert from the camels that this has dropped to $36.60. Buying more than one still works out significantly cheaper but not as good as before: 2 for $62.22, 3 for $82.35. Seeing this post is less than a month old and fairly popular I thought it was worth an update.
