  • How’s the c845’s HDR handling and Image processing compared to Sony x90? Refer to HDTV review for context.
Has TCL improved in these areas since launch?

        Thanks for your opinion.

HDR quality on the C845 is as good if not better than the Sony.

However, upscaling/image processing is significantly worse. Even professional reviewers like RTINGS mention this in their reviews. The TCL QM8, which is an even better model than C845 (but sold in the US), has an extremely low upscaling score, whereas the X90 has the best (source: rtings.com). Having owned an 85C845 for over 6 months, I can also say that upscaling on this TV is pretty bad, which is why I use an HTPC as the source for everything, including watching TV over the internet. The upscaling difference between my PC (with an RTX GPU) and the C845 is night and day.

However, I don't believe upscaling performance should be too much of a concern for most, as it can be easily fixed with an external HDMI dongle, set-top box, or even a PC, like I do.

          • @opt: I haven't thought about upscaling. I usually watch TV from my phone through Google Chrome. So the quality will be worse?

  • I heard TCL sold more tv than LG in 2023

In the last year, we are very happy with our 65" c835!

Got this in last year's Black Friday Sales from JB with the 15% off gift cards for $2284. Cracking TV

    • Is that price after the 15% off card?

      • +1

        2688 -15%= $2284

    • Me too. Awesome purchase. Although I miss the tv guide from my old Sony. Not that I watch much free to air though

    • sorry to hear the tv is cracked lol

    C845 75 inch for $1999.00

    Not a bad deal!

    • I got one in November for $1660 delivered from Bing Lee. Have they gone up since then? It's a great TV for the price.

      • The rrp for the 75" - $2999

Sale price for the 75" from most retailers - $2295

Limited postcodes for the 1999 and free delivery deal

There's been a few sub 2k dips since the last big set of sales in Nov/Dec notably at thegoodguys but was instore only.

Its almost better value to grab an 85" on sale at the moment vs the sale price of the 75".

  • Love the quality.

  • If I get this, my floor standing speakers would need to be behind the tv, would that be doable?

    • Would not recommend unless you switch to wall/ceiling mount

      • damn….ideally i dont wanna do ceiling/wall mount…would be a pain if I wanna upgrade speakers down the track.

        • Make them into surround speakers and add low profile fronts

Any chance of the 85" variant to be available under $2000 anytime soon? :P

RRP of this TV is $4999 (source : TCL AU website).

Bought one from last year’s black Friday deal for around $100 more.

While I'm happy with the purchase, especially considering its price I paid, there are a couple of things you should know about this particular model and size. The 85” version of the C845 is significantly different from the 75” and smaller versions. The screen is noticeably dimmer and has a semi-gloss finish, unlike the fully glossy finish of the smaller models. Even TCL themselves list the overall brightness of the 85” at 500 nits, whereas the 75” and smaller TVs have a brightness of 800 nits – that's a 40% reduction! (scroll down to the very bottom of the specifications). This difference is quite noticeable when comparing them side by side (I've done this at multiple stores with both HDR and SDR content; but don't just take my word for it, go to a store and see for yourself). The matte finish of the screen IMO takes away a bit of vibrancy, but on the other hand it helps with glare, so its not all bad. The problem I have with this whole situation is that all of the reviews out there for this TV (both locally and in the UK) are based on the 75” or smaller models, I don’t think most of those reviewers would have praised the brightness of this TV as much had they reviewed an 85” so keep that in mind when you what you get with most TVs read online reviews.

Additionally, the upscaling is rather mediocre, and despite having a built-in subwoofer, the sound is not significantly better than most other TVs; even a cheap $150 external soundbar should sound much better than the built in speakers, there is a night and day difference between the built in sound of this TV and my 5 year old $300 Yamaha 2.1 soundbar.

But having said all that, I don't regret buying it at all, and I still think it is the best 85” TV you can buy for under $3k. HDR looks good, and brightness (despite not being as bright as the smaller models) is still good enough for day time watching.

    • Excellent review from an actual owner.

Sometimes many of the reviewers focus on aspects that you would see in laboratory testing but in the real world it would be negligible.

I saw one this afternoon and feel that due to the lesser upscaling ability for SD content compared to LG, Samsung and leader in this area Sony, positioning a seating position an extra 30-50cm away will make for better viewer experience.

I wholeheartedly agree with the value aspect you have mentioned. The TV does 98% of what the established brands do at that market segment at half the price. With LG, Samsung and Sony competing in the higher end space and Hisense in the lower I think TCL has hit a home run with a very, very good TV at a low price and no competition. The Sony X90L would have to drop significantly but for now it is in a different price bracket.

It’s hard to compete with it when you can get two for the price of one of the other competitor models.

Upscaling isn’t an issue for me because I’m not using the built-in smart TV, instead I use an HTPC with an RTX GPU which supports AI based upscaling (called super resolution) and HDR, which looks amazing (sample), far better than any TV or set top box out there can deliver. But if you want something more reasonably priced, then I hear the nVidia shield also does a pretty decent job at upscaling.

    • I agree with you on your review. I use external speakers. Never have used the internal speakers. I find it annoying that there is a random pop from my speakers when the tv is off though. I use the headphone jack. The brightness hasn't bothered me though. I use it on about 40%. The booking doesn't bother me either which isn't huge. Very nice size though
