  • How much is this normally?

I guess the deal was updated to include that it is a 33% discount.

OP, instead of writing "You need more words to post this deal", why not add some more actual details about the product? E.g.:
    "Features:
    • Durable powder coated steel frame with 12mm MDF bench top
    • Pegboard backing for organised tool storage
    • Roller bearing sliding drawer for tool storage
    • Plastic foot covers to protect your floor from movement or vibration damage"

It can have 0 words and still be a good deal. The word limit itself is stupid, then again what isn’t on ozb

      • Mate, I got banned a few weeks ago because I saw a Brazillian product pop up, I commented a slang word in Portuguese, and the mod/admin decided to ban me for 2 weeks because they wasted their time to translate something that comes out as a swear online, without having a clue of what it means within context.. 🤣

I expect your comment to get you arbitrarily temp banned and my follow-up comment will also land me in naughty boy section.

MDF Bench top is a killer, you would need to paint it to have it not look terrible after any kind of use.

I bought a similar (same?) one from Masters (remember them?) and replaced the MDF sheets with ply. It’s still going strong.

      • how much did that cost?

        • +3

You can just glue thin ply to the top; so usually about a tenner.

The other solution is just to paint the MDF - visit bunnings on a weekend for a can of misstint.

Experts! What is the ultimate workbench you used and can recommend?
Currently setting up my storage/workspace. TIA

Depends on the kind of work you want to do. I built my own, and I have two that I bought (both bought ones look like the one in this deal, maybe a bit larger). In my case I do soldering and electrical work on the bought ones (the MDF benchtop works well for that), and then various other bits of woodwork and repairs and things on the built one.
My built one is quite large, and gives me lots of space for clamping, drilling and gluing, and has sufficient room for a drill press, a vice and a rotary sander: the size also means I can leave work drying or setting at one end while I work on something else at the other. I also have a computer attached to it, and room underneath for an amplifier and speakers for music while I'm working. I made a space at one end so that I can sit at it like a desk, but the rest is at the right height for standing so I don't have to bend over. It's built like a tank and I knew I wouldn't be able to buy one that matched my requirements. But not everyone would have that option, so as I say it really depends on what you want to do with it.

Can you please post a photo of this built bench? It sounds amazing!

      • Cheers for sharing, that sounds fantastic! Love the idea of custom building that by itself can be a fun project to work on and something to show off. Can't wait to the masterpiece.

If you're not a full DIY type, when it comes to furniture, there is one 'combo' I can recommend.

This work bench; which in stock form is not very heavy duty; though it is rated to half a tonne, it's just rattly (If you dont intend to dismantle, I suggest a drop of epoxy as you bash each support together).
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/pinnacle-900-x-1500-x-540mm-heav…
But the reason you want that one, over most others, is that the bottom shelf is half width, meaning when you sit at the bench, you're not constantly destroying your shins.

      Now the 'upgrade'.
Once you place a sheet of Form Ply on the top, it becomes a monster of a tough work space.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/specrite-1800-x-1200mm-17mm-form…

If you're not a tradie; formply is what they use to form concrete, and is designed for more than 1 use, so you can bet it's tough for normal home tasks.
It's also nice having a jet black surface to work on, since most bolts and nuts are silver, and tools tend to be any colour other than black.
Also cuts down on glare if you need harsh overhead light.

Bunnings will cut the formply for free if you'd like, but the 15cm on each edge, isn't a lot of overhang for such a strong material, and provides easy clamping areas for articulating lights, a vice, places to drill through for cable tidys, etc etc.

Get on Gumtree or Marketplace, and get a bay of used pallet racking.

      Should cost you about $100.

Then go to bunnings and get some yellow tongue or Form ply and use that as the worktop.

This is my setup.. Not super sold on the vice placement, but I don't really have a better place for it for the time being.

  • Thanks Op

  • Good workbenches seem hard to get since covid..
I've been looking but they all have issues.
Poor draws (can be $800 alone) low quality doors where the locks provided simply aren't needed as a two year old can pry them open.

Now thinking it's a DIY project in itself. Can't imagine what $79 will get you besides landfill in 6 months.

    • I own this exact bench; It's all about what work you do.
With nothing more than a silicone mat on top, It's been great for watch repair, building RC cars and Drones, and even heavy 4U server diagnostics.
The little drawer is even smooth to use, and nicely fits a keyboard and mouse for diagnostic use.

It's certainly not fit for hammering on, unless you add a better topper, and are OK with rattles, but any non-impact work, it's held up… literally perfectly.

      By comparison;
My car mods, and welding bench is an old (free) beaten up oak dining table a family was throwing out, which I screwed a sheet of formply to the top of, and a power board and USB fan to the bottom of.

you are better off going on marketplace or gumtree and getting some used pallet racking. Cost you a little bit more, but you'll get something that is of a decent size, and isn't made of cheap steel.
