Western Digital SN740 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 2230 SSD US$98.82 (~A$150.87) Delivered @ Global SSD TOP Store AliExpress

610
24AN10

A new record low price on this M.2 2230 SSD which is an excellent choice for those looking to upgrade their Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, Surface Pro 9, X, Surface Laptop 3, 4, Laptop Go and more.

Since this is a Gen4 SSD you shouldn't use it with the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro 7+ due to stability issues. Both of these have no issues with Gen3 SSDs.

This one offers a sequential read up to 5150 MB/s, sequential write up to 4850 MB/s and uses Toshiba BiCS5 112l or SanDisk TLC flash. Unfortunately 2230 sized SSDs don't have DRAM cache, but this one uses pSLC cache and HMB to make up for it so it's perfectly fine for gaming. Especially when a lot of other similar SSDs are QLC.

  • great post as always 👍

    Why are 1TB so expensive?!

    Cheapest is Samsung for ~$91.

  • Shame the Gen3 isn't competitively priced this time

    What happened to chippageddon?

Can we use this one with PS5?

Does this work on an XBox Series X?

    • +1

If you're thinking about an Expansion Card equivalent, that's the WD CH SN530, which then requires an adaptor, which is apparently pretty flakey. Otherwise a regular SSD via USB will suffice.

    • this does not work on xbox series x.

storing series S/X games on external USB drive (SSD) makes for relatively quick file swaps if you move them to the internal storage. keeping a quiver of active-games in rotation on the internal storage and 'cold' storage on the external SSD isnt the end of the world.

I just delete off internal when im finished with them or particularly big games like COD/Halo/etc I move to external until such a time that my friends and I play them again, then its just a few minutes to transfer back to internal storage.

  • Well tried to buy but wouldn’t let me use the coupon, security blocked.

Oh well, saved me some $.

    • Using PayPal?

      • Interesting, that was a correct guess.

        Is that why?

    Meh aliexpress

  • I'm getting $155.49

  • Now that Western Digital has released the new SN5000S, the old SN740 will be at runout prices.

The SN5000S is cheaper, and faster, and has a bigger TBW number, and does it using 96 layer QLC NAND flash, rather than the 112 layer TLC the SN740 uses.

    • +3

Faster and QLC doesn't quite mix the same as 'faster and TLC'. How slow does it get when the pSLC cache is exhausted? And how much pSLC does it have? QLC will typically go slower than TLC once it's writing directly to flash.

      • It's getting a bit complicated now. The latest controllers are now offering 6000 to 7000 (e.g. NQ790) sequential read for QLC SSDs. SN740 2TB has a rather large dynamic SLC cache. Obviously QLC SSDs would normally have a large dynamic SLC cache as well, but won't be as large as TLC SSDs. The latest QLC NAND types are 176L 3D QLC NAND or even 232L 3D QLC NAND. In SLC cache write mode, they do have the edge.

It's going to confuse people. It's still better to get TLC SSDs, but latest gen NVMe QLC SSDs have CrystalDiskMark figures which do look impressive.

  • Can I make a RAID or NAS out of this? (Noob here)

    • +1

You certainly can but why this model?
2230 SSDs are space (physical size of the device) optimised. You should be able to find better deals on longer NVME SSDs for the same capacity (with better thermal performance, endurance, speed etc).

Also for NAS/RAID usage, I'd prefer a local seller or Amazon for easier warranty.

  • Got charged 147.59 AUD (when paid in USD) + hopefully TopCashback will track the cashback.

    • how much cash back % can you get from topcashback and the other sites e.g. cashreward, shopback?

      • 2.4% for existing AliExpress customers. Much more for new ones.
I got 3.41 AUD back. So 144.18 AUD. Not bad.

    • if you paid with paypal, does paypal do the currency conversion or your bank/credit card provider (if you link the card with paypal)

  • Minor correction:
All Surface Books use 2280 drives
No Surface Go devices have upgradeable storage

    • I always research first. Surface Pro 3 SSD slot and Surface Go slot

      • Yes, both the Surface Pro 3 and the Surface Laptop Go have M2 2242 slots.

But NOT the surface books, nor the surface gos

        • And yet the Surface Book 3 has a screw hole for 2230.

          • +1

@Clear: It does NOT. I have opened both the surface book and go.

The surface PRO 3 DOES have a M2 2242 slot
The Surface BOOK 3 DOES NOT, i have seen it with my own eyes

Again, NONE OF THE SURFACE GO devices have upgradeable storage. Only the Laptop Go.

Please update your description accordingly. "Go" should be replaced with "Laptop Go" and "Book 3" should be removed. I repeat; Book 3 is NOT the Go 3, Laptop Go 3, or Laptop 3.

  • Brilliant thank you so much. I was about to buy a 1TB from Amazon on sale and thought I'd check here at the last moment, glad I did! An extra $20 for a 2TB drive! This is going to be great for my ROG Ally! Thanks for posting.

  • Says "This product can't be shipped to your address. Select another product or address"

    • does that mean it is sold out?

      • Generally yes, although it can come back into stock as I think it might have now.

I suspect, but have never verified, that it might still be in stock for different locations depending on which warehouse they use for that location if they have multiple and that's why the error message is like that.

  • I think it might be in stock again? At least it's showing as in stock for me in NZ and I believe there was a time when it was out of stock. Also the price might have come down. I think I saw it for more earlier (wasn't interested so didn't pay that much attention). And the USD price it shows for me is $91.14 which when combined with the $10 coupon and 10% AU GST would be US$89.25 I think.

    • Unfortunately out of stock again now for me in NZ. Might be worth keeping an eye on though, it' possible it might come and go out of stock

      • Showing as in stock again in NZ even when I select delivery to ACT. Be warned I saw the same yesterday and within 30 minutes or so it took me to come to post, I found it was out of stock

  • Mine just arrived. Box was squished. Let's hope it works.
