  • Noob question: if a Wi-Fi network I’m connecting to with this device restricts certain websites/apps, would this circumvent the restriction?

No. Not unless you use it to VPN - but then you might as well just use a VPN directly on your device (computer, phone, tablet). But if you needed to use a device (such as TV) where you can't install a VPN then you could connect the device to this router and have the router then do the VPN tunnel. However the network you are connecting to may block VPN traffic so best check this first before buying anything.

    Has a built-in wireguard client.

Get that right and it's all the security you need.

  • I have this and use this as access point. It's very good and I'm overall happy with it. One small gripe is if you use the built in usb 2 for connecting to storage it's horrendously slow(~2 MBps). I've another router with usb 2 that gives me around 25 MBps. This is not a everyday use case so most people should be happy with all the features it provides

  • I have a Slate Plus which is an upgrade on this version. But, it saved me the last time I had to work in a hotel room. The internet was terrible at the desk on the hotel's WiFi but fine in other parts of the room. I set up this device near the door, connected to it, and yay perfect WiFi.

  • Went for the Beryl AX GL-MT3000 114.86

    • did the same!

  • OP, thank you for sharing. What are you using for your main router? Same brand as this or an Open WRT based system? Do you use the same SSID throughout your place?

I have an Asus RT-AC88U. I need to get an extender to improve range at the back of my place. I've already got a CAT6 cable in place that I can use to connect the two devices. I've read that some people have used an Asus / GL-inet combo but I'm sure it comes with a little bit of overhead with more manual configuration.

Can anyone else comment on this? Appreciate any tips!

    • I'm just using my Opal as a 5Ghz WIFI repeater for my NBN modem (Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 broadcasting on 2.4Ghz). No cables needed between the two units. I use different SSIDs on my modem and router, so I'm afraid I won't be of much help here…

You don't need to use the same SSID as your home wifi - most devices have a notion of a "saved network", and will just rotate around them until they connect to one.

At least, that's what I have - I leave my travel router off at home, and when travelling all my devices automagically connect to it when it's in range and my home network is not.

      • Yeah that's right. Are there instances where your devices connect to the weaker network?

I think this is where the same SSID and having it configured as an extender (or is it repeater?) makes it all seem like a single network.
