  • ooooh nice. But there isnt much reason to upgrade from a previous model.

    • +9

Previous model? This one has been around for years

  • been lower at $199 before … years ago tho

    I got a g29 for $250 off fb marketplace

    • +4

yep, there is a lot of people selling it second hand on MP with little use.

      • I've been keeping an eye out on these wheel for a while on Marketplace and found a worthy bargain for the G923 with shifter and the heavy machinery panel for $200

        • yeh that good …

i plan to buy the stickshift for $49

    • I got mine from fb for $100

  • I can wait. Thanks OP.

  • Still alive and kicking after almost 9 years… that's a very impressive product lifecycle.

Even with the G923 replacement & now the Direct Drive options, the G29 is still going!

  • +4

I also recommend getting one from Marketplace for $200, great wheel.

    • +1

Yeah this is definitely one of those products you are best looking for on marketplace. They come up all the time hardly used and very cheap, as the novelty wears off.. Every time these get posted it just reminds me I should list mine lmfao.

  • Any decent complete driving builds that people know about that are already configured to work with the G29?

    • I tried linking one but just look up g29 sim rig and a few will come up on Amazon

      • Are you referring to the seat and stuff for mounting the G29 to? I was talking about the software side of things….. May not have been completely clear on my first post.

        • Oh yes my bad I thought you meant a sim rig

  • +1

Why can't there be a good cheap wheel that works on PS5, XSX, and PC.

    • +3

Because of the licensing fees PlayStation and Xbox charge to use the technology to make the wheels compatible, 2 licensing fees = double the price. Fanatec gets away with it by keeping the wheel base and wheel separate so if you buy one of each the system you're on will just register whatever is compatible I'm guessing?

      "MULTI-PLATFORM POSSIBILITIES.
If you combine any Xbox-licensed Steering Wheel with any PlayStation-licensed Wheel Base, all connected Fanatec hardware becomes compatible with both Xbox and PlayStation systems. And of course, all combinations work on PC too."
      https://fanatec.com/us-en/platforms#:~:text=Multi%2Dplatform….

      • Is the material and manufacturing cost of the wheel really less than the licensing fees?

        • +2

It would be the cost of both the licensing and the tech itself that makes it compatible, it would be patented. There's also the factor that Sony and Xbox wouldn't approve licensing knowing it was going to be compatible for both, likely the reason why there isn't a single unit solution available on the market. I could imagine though that the licensing and permission to use the tech and the tech itself probably could cost more than the rest of the wheel itself as it is just plastic without that tech inside it.

    • DriveHub is an option, bit of mucking around from what I've heard but will let a wheel work on both Xbox and PS

  • +2

You can buy a Thrustmaster GT RS T300 for $300+ dollars off marketplace. Save your money and buy that instead. That should be minimum entry level spec for a non direct drive wheel for newbies.

    • +1

Newbies don't even know if they like sim racing. A Logi G25 or G27 is good enough and cheap enough at $80-$120 to try, not a $300+ set lol.

      • +1

A used G29/G920 from FB marketplace is my recommendation, I picked mine up for $80 with the shifter and it was practically new, christmas present their son used 20 times then never touched again.

        • Ah that's a extremely good price! Similar story for my G923 (no shifter) which I got 2 months new for $210 - the dad was annoyed that the son wasted all that money rip

After that I sold my covid-era second hand G27 (also no shifter) for $120.

  • +1

Pardon my knowledge, which one do you need to play basic games like Forza and EA Sports F1?

    • +1

This wheel would work well for both, but this price is still a bit high imo, considering how cheap direct drive kits are regularly selling for on sale. Under $300 and I would call it a decent deal, and it's not a bad wheel at all, I have the G27 (basically same wheel) and it's a lot of fun with a wide variety of games, including sims.

Also @Justin9mm mentioned the Thrustmaster GT RS T300 can be had for similar price as this second hand and that is a significantly better wheel. I just don't know if it's compatible with consoles or whether or not you need that.

Thanks mate. Let me check them out.

        • You're welcome, good luck 👍

  • I've had a lot of fun using one of these and a Quest 2 to play DIRT Rally 2.0!

  • Any suggestions for a cheap seat / stand to mount a wheel on? Something that can be folded up pretty easily?

    • +1

@timmof I have a Wheel Stand Pro and it is a fantastic bit of kit imo. It may not look it but it's very stable and most importantly it it lightning quick to setup and pack away. I timed it and it's only 90 seconds for each respectively.

What this means is, that I went from hardly using it because of the drudgery and time it took to setup every single time, to using it whenever I felt like it, even for a short session, with no headaches attached. Essentially saving me from a wasted purchase that sat in a cupboard for years and letting me enjoy a lot of fun racing games like what I originally intended.

Bonus is that it folds away very compact and can easily fit in a wardrobe or behind a door etc.

Not sure I would call it very cheap, but it meant that I didn't waste my initial investment, as described above and so it was really worth it imo.

Thanks mate. Get what you mean about easy setup. The wheel I've got is a hand-me-down form a mate who upgraded about a year ago - never actually plugged it in… just been in a box in the garage because I've got nothing to mount it on. F1-23 on PS Plus this month so thought I'd dust if off.

You're just using an office chair?

        • +1

You're welcome 👍, yes it works well with a standard office chair, I had wood floors so just placed furniture coasters under the two casters at the back of the chair (no need to put on all of them, I found) and that was enough to keep it from slipping when hitting the brake hard.

Another bonus is that, when at a desk, you just need to set the height of the wheel so the plate just slips over the top of the desk edge and then you have the wheel snugly pressed against it and giving you an even more solid feel.

But honestly, it's very solid without this and I currently use it sitting on the lounge chair in front of TV and it works great and is very solid too.

Yep, you sound like a perfect candidate for a wheel stand, based on what you described, being basically my situation too. IMO the only viable way to use a wheel is with a wheel stand for this crucial exact (actually being able to the thing!)

F1-23 sounds like a lot of fun, I only have PC but if I had a PS5, I think I'd be playing the sh*t out of Gran Tourismo 7, that game looks like a tonne of fun! Especially with a wheel 👌

          • @wonderboy4: Try Forza Horizon 5 or The Crew Motorfest on PC - they're great fun with a wheel. (You just missed a play free weekend for Motorfest).

      • +1

Thanks for the detailed write up. Im in same boat, effort to set up is too much of a hurdle. The pole in the middle looks like could be kind of annoying though… Is it not?

        • yeah, good question. (Otherwise seems something like a second hand Next Level Racing Wheel Stand 2.0 would be a low cost option with 2x struts on each side rather than a central pole - more $s that wonderboy4's option though)

  • Do you also need to buy Driving shifter with this? Or its an extra?

    • +1

You don't need a shifter if you are just driving semi-auto / sequential gear style cars (e.g. F1 or GT3), since the paddle shifter on the wheel is sufficient. For rally you will probably want a manual shifter.

      • @tekisei I know it's probably more immersive with the shifter, but I was playing Dirt Rally with just the paddles on the older cars and it was still a lot of fun and actually a lot easier too. So definitely not very important imo, especially if wanting to same a bit of money up front. Just my two cents

        • Thanks @tekisei and @wonderboy4.
Now I just need find the chair and steering stand

          • +1

@amsaini15: @amsaini15 You're welcome, check my post reply to @timmof a bit further up in regards to the Wheel Stand Pro V2, it's a very good and compact wheel stand, that sets up and packs away in under 2 minutes, and is a reasonable price.

I also posted a link, I hope it helps

    • +2

I bought a G920 and a shifter years ago. I probably used the shifter once. I'd say it's a waste of money.

      • @AdrianW I know what you mean, I have barely ever used the shifter on my G27 (although thankfully it was included anyway). But some people would really dig it and get into it, just not many do.

But I've seen people put in the time and effort to learn/become proficient with it and it definitely must add to immersion and fun factor, and looks so cool when in use. But yeah most people should save their money and only buy it if they find the paddles are lacking. But really it should just come with it like the G27 did.

        • Another problem with the shifter - it doesn't really work if the vehicle you're driving has more than 6 gears. So you'll end up using the sequential shifters on the wheel anyway.

  • Vrooooooom!!!!!
