yeah the quest 2 was good back in the day and if your a first timer in VR then its a good buy.

  • +8

Still more immersion and wow factor than upgrading from last gen consoles to current gen.

Still the best VR headset under $750, too… right?

  • +12

You peeps that picked up a Quest 3 512GB the other day for one hell of a deal. I've had one since launch. Superb device. Notice the 128GB is $799 so 100% feels like a price error which I'm sure they will honour.

Hate to say it but 128GB doesn't feel like enough. The 512GB is a monster, I've been throwing on so many apps, movies etc and it's only half full. This deal here is great but my advice to a mate would be save your cash and get the 3. It is an enormous upgrade.

    • +2

How do you save your cash when the Quest 3 is more than double of quest 2?

      • +11

yeah I probably meant to throw in the word up. "save up" is what I really mean. Worth it. Not a wise financial decision, a wise experience decision.

        • +5

It depends on how your VR experience goes.

Half the people I know with a Quest 2 are still into VR and use it all the time.

The other half were excited for a few months, then lost interest entirely.

There seems to be no correlation between initial enthusiasm either. Some of the most excited early adopters no longer use it, others that caved in and bought it because it was too cheap to pass up are obsessed with it now.

So, if it turns out VR is for you, the Quest 3 is a better buy. If it turns out it’s a two-month fad, the Quest 2 will let you get that out of your system for a lower price.

          • +1

@axyh: yeah what you are saying rings very true. I don't know the answer to my own question but I wonder if you are in the I don't like it camp, how resell and overall interest from.the market would work out for you if you try and flog it off in a few months. I realise you'd potentially lose less with the 2 of course but I'd argue that if you want to try them out the passthrough on the 3 alone is a HUGE improvement in the overall experience - particularly with MR obviously. I guess each route is a gamble. Least it's not a Vision Pro kind of gamble. 🤣😂

            • @seamonkey: I have the 2 and loved playing some cricket. Gets a bit hot in the summer time though.

What are the best advantages of the 3 over the 2?

              • +6

@adb1984: The key differences between the Meta Quest 2 and the Meta Quest 3:

                Design and Comfort:
Meta Quest 3 is approximately 40% slimmer than the Quest 2 in terms of the front casing.
The Quest 3 has a better-balanced weight distribution, resulting in a more comfortable fit for extended VR sessions.

The use of pancake (slimmer) lenses means the Quest 3 doesn’t protrude as far from your face, making it look less conspicuous in virtual reality1.
                Interpupillary Distance (IPD) Adjustment:
Adjusting the IPD (focus) is easier on the Quest 3 with a front-accessible dial.

In contrast, the Quest 2 requires adjusting the lenses manually by pulling them apart or pushing them together at 5mm intervals.

                Graphics and Performance:

The Quest 3 boasts sharper and clearer graphics due to its faster processor.
It can handle crisp, detailed imagery while maintaining lag-free gaming.
Every Meta Quest 2 game runs seamlessly on the Quest 3, so no need to wait for titles.

                Field of View (FOV):
The Quest 3 offers a wider FOV (110 degrees horizontally, 96 degrees vertically) compared to the Quest 2.
Meta hasn’t officially posted the Quest 2’s FOV specs, but the Quest 3’s FOV aligns with the Quest Pro’s specifications

Mixed Reality and Virtual Reality Capabilities:
The Quest 3 is undoubtedly one of the best MR/VR headsets currently available.

It offers high-fidelity passthrough, improved graphics, and compatibility with all Quest 2 games.
Remember that the Meta Quest 3 is a significant upgrade over the Quest 2, making it a worthy choice for those seeking an enhanced VR experience.

Certainly! Let’s explore a few more differences between the Meta Quest 2 and the Meta Quest 3:

                Audio Experience:

The Quest 3 features enhanced spatial audio, providing a more immersive sound experience.
Its built-in speakers deliver richer, more realistic audio without the need for additional headphones.

                Battery Life:
The Quest 3 offers longer battery life compared to the Quest 2.
You can enjoy extended VR sessions without worrying about frequent recharging.

                Controllers:
The Quest 3 controllers have a more ergonomic design, making them comfortable to hold for extended periods.
They also feature improved tracking accuracy for precise interactions in virtual environments.

                Software and Updates:
The Quest 3 benefits from ongoing software updates that enhance performance, fix bugs, and introduce new features.
Meta continues to refine the user experience, ensuring that the Quest 3 remains up-to-date and optimized.

Both headsets offer unique features, and your choice depends on your priorities and preferences.

Also other things like free Asgards Wrath 2 and 6 months of Quest+ with 512GB purchase. I can say the games collection available and the extra 2 a month free seem to be getting better each month.

    • May i know how good are hand gestures which eliminate the need of controller on gen 3? Interested to get one for coming Christmas.

      • +2

They had an software update in recent months/s, kicked it out of the park - in my opinion it is great now. Nothing is perfect though. I'll try and find you a link to better information and I'll edit this post.

One thing I will say is @UberIsCool makes an excellent point below. How long will Meta even support the 2 for? My guess is not long, they are absolutely all in on the 3 now.

        Edit.
Check out from 3:55 here…as an example.
        https://youtu.be/cYPrEf7Ap0k?si=uFAZ2H3CeP_o1oMh

        • From everything I've read they intend on keeping the 2 around as like a cheaper version like Samsung with the "a" model tablets etc.

          • @CharlieAus: The only reason I'm doubtful of that is there has been so much chatter of a Quest 3 "Lite", the cheaper end of the market appears to be a new product. Probably huge sacrifices. Talk of colour passthrough gone, maybe crappier lens and so on.

      • +2

It's fine for basic tasks and controlling the UI, doesn't compare to a controller for gaming though.

        • Browser and keyboard?

          • @hopper: Yeah that's fine with hand tracking. Although don't expect to type as fast as you are in real life, it's more like one finger point tapping

            • @KzD: Thank you

              • +1

@hopper: Keep in mind the Quest 2 got virtually the same update and has the same level of performance in terms of hand tracking, at least outside of gaming.

    • Wish they would have a proper sale on the quest 3 or I get one of those price errors like you did lol

$1000+ is too rich for my blood. $799 seems more reasonable considering the only difference is the memory and I doubt a 512gb memory chip costs $200 more than a $128gb memory chip these days.

      • +1

You are getting so much for that 1k though. I can't see them going on sale for a while. The memory at 4 times the size makes a massive difference, particularly if you wish to travel and throw on a ton of movies or a huge selection of apps. Remember you get the 6 month Quest+ membership with 512GB purchase as well, people aren't usually thrilled by it, but personally I've been wrapped with the 12 "free" games Meta has offered over the last almost 6 months. I think my membership renews next month and I'll keep it going. Support as said earlier is something people will really need to consider now if the decide to go the Quest 2 route.

        • +1

Yeah but my point is the pricing is bullshit when the only difference between the two models is memory size mobile phones pull the same shit.

Heck they could have just put a slot like for Steam Deck and other portable consoles so we could add our own memory since you can buy 1tb+ super fast memory cards for like $100-150.

          • -3

@Vyviel: I mean 4 times the storage AND the Quest+ membership for a couple of hundred bucks extra doesn't seem crazy. Then there are plenty of other considerations, user experience, a big one is resell value.

Keep in mind that's it's very possible (based on my research) that Meta might be producing these units at cost or possibly even losing money. The purchase of apps and accessories is where they make their money. The tech inside is insane. I'm an old guy, I've been interested in tech for 40 years now - we buy everything that comes out. This is in my opinion probably the finest tech piece I've ever purchased. I don't recall in recent decades that incredible Wow factor that I'm getting from this device. I got to see irl Minority Reportish level.

I'm blown away by passthrough and the fact I can watch a newly released cinema movie through Skybox on my ceiling and make the screen as clear and as big as any IMAX I've ever been in around the world. Understatement to say it's cool af. I've got my $1049 worth already. No doubt.

    • +1

Is the Quest 3 worth the upgrade over the 2 if you mainly use it for PC over Airlink?

    • The storage needs are entirely dependent on how you play. If you're going to be on device the whole time, definitely go up a bit for storage. Otherwise, if you're planning to tether or wirelessly link to a PC it's not worth it. I got the 256GB many years ago now and it wasn't worth it due to the fact I mostly just wirelessly play from the PC. If that's your plan, I reckon save the cost from the storage upgrade for a wi-fi 6 router.

      • +1

Yeah that's all fair. I'm more the ton of local movies on the plane and really using it's portability when I go overseas. Also really hate uninstalling and reinstalling apps over the coming years.as one manages space. You definately highlight that we all use them differently.

Enough people upgrading to Quest 3 that is worth checking Facebook marketplace for a used Quest 2 before buying new, although there are a glut of people dreaming they will sell secondhand for the price they paid years ago.

    • +2

I feel like this info should be pinned on all Quest bargain deals. It's a good deal for the buyer and the community and too many people just aren't aware of the free $47 credit so they miss out.

  • +1

Is sideloading still possible on these? I remember there was a 70gb file available when I got the OG quest

    • +1

If you're interested in sailing the high seas in VR it is very possible and very easy. Apparently. And yeah sideloading is possible as far as I know, but it's been a while since I have had to do so.

      • +1

Good to know. Yeah it's been a while since I sailed the high seas, all my booty got deleted when meta did the forced account link with my device. Haven't used the VR since

        • +4

It's ridiculous. A "rookie" could do it, my 128gb quest 2 is almost full. I do find that the Fresnel lens can be funny when viewing text or certain images.

    • Yeah sideloading is possible, has been back in the days of Meta Quest 1. Now it's significantly easier than before. Do note that Meta has a side-store that housed a lot of the traditionally sideloaded apps.

    • +1

There was an update making the process all possible within the headset now using browser USB virtualisation last week. Previously you had to be plugged in, facing west, chanting buggaloogapoopah.

  • +4

    very good price…
I got it 2 yrs ago and it's collecting dust on the shelf.. :)

    • +1

I find this too, VR is pretty cool at first, and like you said, the device is sitting there collecting dust.

      • Sounds like marriage

        • Pretty much like that when you are on a quest for marriage

    • Ours still gets used after a couple of years, occasionally by the kids. Having said that, we definitely got our money's worth in the first 6 months. I still bust it out for some sim racing every now and then or for Personal Only Raunchy Nighttime viewing.

      • Then the kids quietly come home one evening without you hearing XD

    • I love my VR and it gets used regularly by myself and the kids.

What did you play on it, and what made you stop?

I've got a range of games, Pistol Whip, Beat Sabre, Walking Dead, I've added some great free ones from the AppLab store too.

I've installed Sidequest, and have played OG Doom 1 and 2, Quake1, I'm in the middle of Doom 3 and Doom 64 (Black Mesa / Half Life VR is next, then will jump into HL Alyx!). I have purchased Res Evil 4 in VR (never played RE4, so keen to try this for first time in VR), and Part 2 of Walking Dead.

Just curious. When I first played Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on the Wii, I knew I'd love the immersion of VR.

      • Re4 is god tier. Only zombie game I've ever enjoyed

  • +2

Not sure how long they will support this model

    • this is a good point to consider.

    • It will be replaced with the Meta Quest 3s, a cheaper version.

But will still be more expensive.

    • +3

Keep in mind Quest 2 still holds over 45% of PCVR market share. You'll be good for another few more years, at least until quest 4.

      • +1

Quest 1 had support for 4 years. Quest 2 is almost 4 years old.

        • +2

Yeah correct but Quest 2 has a huge market base compared to the original, it still makes up the majority of Quest headsets out there and it's still actively being sold so they need to support this for a while yet. the Q1 was never a big commercial hit compared.

        • +2

          https://twitter.com/boztank/status/1664343955042107392

The Meta CTO did indicate that Quest 2 will continue to be supported with new games for "quite a while".

That being said the Quest 2 did sell in much greater numbers than the Quest 1 — on the Steam PC hardware survey the original Quest 1 barely even registers a blip on the charts, since it's lumped in with "Other" at just 13% percent. The Quest 2 is still the most common, at 39.2 percent.

  • Dannng, thought it was the Quest 3

  • +3

if you're kinda on the fence but dont wanna drop the cash for the q3, the q2 is still pretty capable imo.

ive had mine since release and still havent bothered with linking to pc - native quest games make it too easy to just jump in jump out as needed and when you get immersed in it, the graphic quality isnt such a big deal imo.

    • +1

Why aren't you using Steam Link to stream games? That's what I've been doing.

      • These days I rarely turn on my gaming pc.
(Last time was December for 1 day during Xmas holidays lol)

    • The visual quality increase is awesome using PCVR. There are also plenty of options now - Virtual Desktop/SteamLink/Air Link/Cable.

I am, however, often too lazy to set it up.

  • +1

If you were to only use this for porn, is this sufficient or would you go for a Quest 3? Asking for a friend…

    • +3

      I mean… it works - or so I’ve heard.
29.5 seconds of immersion- to be honest maybe too much immersion.

    • my friend is not impressed with q2 porn, can some q3 ppz chime in if 3 is better at it so I can tell him

      • I don't see why it would be any different apart from a minor resolution increase. The limiting factors would be video quality and internet download speed.

Also, I imagine you might want to turn hand tracking off if you don't want to ruin the… Immersion.

      • What didn’t impress ?
And what was he comparing it to? Real life or..

      • Hell yeah. Get decent content and it's fantastic.

  • How does the Quest 2 and 3 compare to Pico 4? Im reading/watching alot of mixed reviews. Anyone tried both?

  • +1

I have the 64GB model. Installed Asgard's Wrath 2 on it… and it's full. I can't install anymore more on it.

    • +3

I can't install anymore more on it.

      How about just 1 more?

      • not anymore

  • Is there a way to gift a game to a friend?
Eg. I can find that there is a eGiftCard on Amazon US for BeatSaber. For $29.99
I assume this is in USD.
    Is there anything in AUD?

  • +2
  • Got myself a quest 3 and although cool for gaming really disappointing that all major streaming services are not available and those that are don't have greats. I know you can use big screen beyond but you should have to rely on "inception" like tactics. Really hope we start seeing easier ways to add or watch sfw movies and shows otherwise my headset will start to gather dust.

    • +1

I'm primarily using Big Screen to watch a few shows with friends. You can also use a Virrtual desktop, the built-in player, and the browser.

      • Yea was hoping for more easier offline options. Travelling a bit this year and was hoping for ways to get more shows on device.

    • Yeah it's pretty insane that the streaming services still haven't got their act together on this.

Their excuse for terrible web browser clients was DRM, but Quest is a closed platform, it's not an issue (if it ever is).

  • Which bundle is a must to have first?

  • Is Quest 3 that is twice the price, twice as good in features?

    • 30% better if ads are to be believed.

    • It really depends how much you'll use it. I was gifted a Q2 for xmas and I was looking at upgrading before I even started using it. It honestly doesn't get that much usage but I will be eying the Q4 for when it's released in a few years or the Q3 for a cheap upgrade.

The Q2 can be a bit fiddly lining up your eyes to the right spot and text can be blurry due to the Fresnel lens unless you're looking at it directly. The Q3 apparently has corrected this issue and is way faster.

  • +1

Good price for entering VR, but fresnel lens, ugh never again. just has a smaller focus point.

cant wait for OLED ones, but heard they have their own muras issue,

  • +4

I'm currently modifying a Quest 2 to improve upper limb function of a young man with cerebral palsy including modifying the controllers to have external inputs.

    Good fun

  • +2

I love how people on marketplace want to sell used ones for over 400

    • +2

Yeah, considering it's been on their dirty faces and out of warranty.

It's pretty funny, I've been offering them $200 but I'll go with this instead.

  • What's the strap to get?
    Elite?
    Elite with battery?
    Third party?

    • The Quest is front-heavy so having the battery at the back helps to balance some of that weight.

    • idk the stock one hasnt given me any dramas…

  • Is there Amazon cashback for this?

  • How do these go as headsets for sim racing with a PC? Forza, iRacing etc.

    • +1

At this price, it's a no brainer if you're just wanting it to enjoy casual racing. Wireless streaming means no cables and AMD FSR or Nvidia DSR have made a huge difference to the clarity of distant objects for me.

  • Have a few questions..

Can the GolfVR game be played on this?

Do you require a PC or Laptop to use this / downloand games, do anything necessary? Or is it its own tablet in the eyes? I only own an iphone

  • How does this compare to my PS VR 1 with PS4. I know the ps vr 1 have a lot lower res. But it’s OLED, and quest 2 is LCD.

  • does this display windows as a multi screen desktop?
if yes then is the connection wireless?

    • +2

Yeah it works and is wireless, but the res/comfort/battery isn't really up to working for extended periods like it's a real multi-monitor setup.

  • +4

Half Life Alyx is on sale. $29.90

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/836216

  • I'm only looking to watch movies. Do you think this is a good option for that, or do you have any other recommendations for a great movie-watching experience?

    • The fidelity isn't there. It gets pretty blurry when you blow up the screen size.

  • Thanks for sharing. Been keen on VR for a while now and finally took the plunge with this deal.

Mostly planning to watch shows on it.

    • +1

Do yourself a favour and immediately invest and replace the head strap as it makes it so much more enjoyable as the current one is front heavy on not comfortable at all.
I (example only) use the KIWI design Comfort Head Strap and velcro a 10000mAh power bank to the rear for extra power. Works very well. Others like the BOBOVR brand.

      • Thank you for the recommendation! I did notice quite a few YouTubers noting the weight balance.

  • -3

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but if Meta themselves are saying this is the "new low price", doesn't that make $359.99 the new RRP? Which to me suggests that Amazon's stated RRP of $439.99 with 18% discount is misleading… ie. not a deal

    • Your thinking and your neg doesn't make any sense. RRP was $439.99 what do you want to do about that, go back in time and change that? Some logic please…
