I bought the top of the line Olympus tough camera in 2009.

It was very slow and took crap photos - but was very rugged.

I hope they've improved both the speed and picture quality.

The reviews I've read suggest Panasonic and Sony have better offerings, but you can't argue with the price…

I own the TG-310 (purchased back in Harvey Norman's 2 for 1 camera OzB Deal). The quality is still crap =) I guess it's more of a novelty than a decent P&S. For $100 it's okay for whatever rugged/aquatic purposes you need it for.

Yeah I had one of the Olympus tough cameras from 2008 - 2011. It's life came to an end when it leaked whilst snorkelling (and no I wasn't even close to exceeding the 3 metre depth, and yes I had checked that there wasn't sand in the seals, and no I didn't open it when under water). Apparently the rubber seals perish, and so the manual suggests you get them replaced every few years (yeah, right, as if most people are going to do that).

There was no fixing it once the salt water entered it, and it just became a toy prop for a toddler to play with. And the design was a bit silly, because it meant a minor leak became a total failure: instead of having one sealed door, with all the camera internals separated from that (so that if it leaks, it just means the electronics in the compartment area are lost), it had 2 sealed doors (one for USB port, and another for battery + memory card), and both of the compartments allowed water to flow into the rest of camera. So twice the chance for failure, and any failure will be total.

But whilst it was working, the photo quality was never that great, and it was a bit slow, but I took it skiing and into the water, and got digital photos that otherwise I would have missed. So for $99, it's fun to be able to get photos in places where you wouldn't take a decent cell phone camera, but don't expect image quality to be amazing, and accept that it will likely fail at some point due to the seals going. Oh, and the memory cards it took were non-standard, using the Olympus memory cards, instead of SD cards.

TL;DR : Rugged for first 3 years; can leak after that; waterproofing design flawed; image quality sub-par; bit slow; but for $99, not bad, especially if you're often at the snow or in the water.

Ive posted before about the need to replace costly seals in waterproof cameras. Same as in waterproof watches etc. Needs to be factored into cost, especially if you won't use in water much to get benefit.

(I've wrecked 3 cameras- fell in ocean, sand in lens, fall from under 2m, so I like the idea of these cameras when the price is right. I'm tempted by this deal. )

Panasonic from memory say replace every year ($60+) to avoid total destruction. So 3 years is a long life!

Would like waterproof one, but under water would be a minor use in travels. Also could not justify a waterproof camera as most reviews panned the image quality. Use internal lens system which tend to have fringing effect & don't get as much light, so image quality suffers.

As a compromise, I bought a $14 waterproof (to 5m) pouch (Macpac sale 2 weeks back). Yet to try taking photos when snorkelling. So far have used an Ozbargain $128 Cannon Ixus 220HS - has underwater setting & took photos underwater in pool. A bit tricky, but early days.

As the cost of installing seals is near the cost of this camera, replacing camera when seals fail, or limiting underwater use to first 18months to prolong camera life would be suggested. But many would replace with new model before seals fail.

  • Not bad, considering newer models are around $200-300+. Great for underwater swimming & diving vids.

    • Don't think you can take it diving. Doesn't go .deep enough

      • just get yourself a gopro..theyre pretty cheap

  • Specs can be found here http://www.olympus.com.au/Products/Digital-Cameras/Tough/TG-….
    14Megapixels and Battery "type (model):LI-42B"

  • Can anyone comment on the 3D feature? I have lg 3d tv at home.

    • 3D is a little tricky.. only works with 'still' shots, and lining it up manually is Very Difficult… however, the 3D, when it is lined up properly, does work.
If you haven't tried a manual 3D photo before, it's kinda like doing a Panorama, where the camera tells you to move till it's happy, and takes the second shot.
Camera is great for $100 - I got it at about that price on eBay a while ago, Very Rich Colours, little grainy, but with 6 kids, it handles the drops and knocks, and beach trips, and pool dives Very Well. *8vD

  • I really wanted to like the Olympus PS cameras, but the UI is really crappy and seems a lot of hassle. Maybe a waterproof bag is more practical for the odd beach excursion. Pretty cool for underwater photography tho, but worried I'd stuff up the o-rings.

I just about think you really need to store the camera away with the doors open so they arent pressing on the seals all the time.

  • you can use this for shallow dives

  • It is an okay camera if you go swimming with them or taking pictures in the snow… don't expect the picture qualities to knock you off your feet.

But at this price, you could afford to get couple of them and hand them out to the kids or people whom are rough with their equipments.

  • I bought the fujitsu finepix xp50 for $150. Maybe i should of waited and got this deal!

  • My brother has this camera and it does not take good shots, at all.
No autofocus or stabilisation. You might think that the pictures will look good once on your computer but this is not the case. You could take better shots with an iPhone 3GS.
Oh, and after one drop onto pavement it broke and had to have it sent away. So much for shockproof.

It's a shame the iPhone 3GS is not waterproof though.
