Vancouver5%

For those that missed the last deal, it's not the cheapest it's been, it's a very popularly recommended dashcam with the Sony Starvis 2 IMX678 sensor

Also for single channel, the VIOFO WM1 2K WITH SONY STARVIS IMX335 SENSOR is $114.14 ( it will be cheaper if you buy more with Vancouver5% but I'm not sure what the minimum spend is or over $110 USD for EASTER2024) - https://viofo.com/dash-cam/303-viofo-wm1-2k-quad-hd-1440p-30…

But maybe dash cam people might recommend the new VIOFO VS1 MINI 2K HDR at $160.31 - https://viofo.com/dash-cam/343-viofo-vs1-mini-2k-hdr-with-so…
or the popular A119 V3 at $122.42 - https://viofo.com/dash-cam/143-a119-v3-with-gps-2k-25601600p…
I'm curious what people think?

    It's pays for itself.

Is this one the bees knees of all the Viofo?
I get lost in those models. Versions. And Pro, Plus, blah.
I know some advise against a specific one due to some problems. In short, this is the best performing Viofo?

    • I don't think it is the best in terms of quality video, but I think it hits the best sweet spot in their lineup for value and features, at least that's the gist I get, happy to be corrected.

    • +4

I think the A229 Pro has slight advantages over this.

      • +2

Agreed. A229 Pro is the Flagship in terms of image quality IMO.

    • +1

I have a search saved for "A129 Plus Duo". Holding out for that one.

  • Looking for just an entry level budget option, comparing between WM1 2K and A119 V3, the A119 seems like the better pick - or am I missing something?

    • +1

You would miss out on voice notifications and built-in wifi with the a119 v3 but you might prefer the wedge shape vs the tube shape of the WM1.

Otherwise, most people would recommend you spring for the VIOFO A119 MINI 2 at $163.96, not the lowest price but it's 25% off and the most it's been is 28% during black friday

      • Why do you need voice notifications from a dash cam?

        • +1

Some people might prefer to be told their SD card is corrupted rather than hearing a beep or checking the screen, just a piece-of-mind thing I suppose!

          • +1

@YourImag1nat1on: Believe me chance of your card being corrupted will be lower than being hit by lightning but chance of your viofo not telling you it is running on faulty firmware and not recording anything will be greater than sunrise tomorrow.

            • @lgacb08: Depends on the card quality. Cheap SD cards die just by looking at them. SD card failures are very common.

            • @lgacb08: Yeah, I checked my A129 pro duo last week and realised it hadn't been recording. I put the SD card in my PC and there was a 300MB FAT32 partition with an empty DCIM folder and ~230GB of unpartitioned space 😭

I had no warning or notification, the camera showed the flashing red dot like it was recording. Nothing wrong with the SD card, I just formatted it in the camera and it's working fine again.

I'm going to make a habit of formatting the card once a month I think.

      • thanks appreciate the advice! ended up getting the A119 Mini 2 that you recommended with the EASTER2024 code for $157.25. Next up gotta figure out how to install it haha

        • +1

oh right, I forgot to check the easter coupon for that model, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

        • If you're unsure you could always ask on Airtasker… Plenty of people can fit it for you

  • Is it better to have separate front and rear dash cams? It seems to be cheaper to have 2 x a119 cameras than this one

    • +2

Usually, people prefer to have one high-quality front camera and a second rear channel going to the main unit to avoid the hassle of 2 SD cards and managing 2 cameras.

But people definitely run 2 units front and rear, if you wanted you could get 2 x WM1 for $212.94 with the EASTER2024 code

    • When doing separate cams it's tricky to get power at the rear. It's fine if you got a car with a 12v cigarette lighter socket in the trunk. Also if you want to do parking mode for front and rear, the hardwire kit for the rear cam will need to get to the fusebox up front.

  • How is it installed out of the box? Do we need to purchase a hardwire kit?

    • The included 12v plug goes into the 12v socket (cigarette lighter). The cable is usually long enough for you to neatly route and hide along panels and edges all the way up to the A pillar (be careful not to interfere with curtain airbags) and then into the roof lining to the centre of the windshield. Drop it down a bit and plug it into the dashcam. I've done both hardwire and 12v socket installations, and I feel 12v is sufficient. I don't use any of the 24h features and choose to gamble and save 15-20 bucks on something I think has a low risk of happening.

      • I did this as well with my viofo, the problem is time stamp though, everytime the car stoopped the time stopped as well and it is a hastle to snchronise everytime you start the car.

  • +1

I don’t understand dashcams that record inside the car - what benefit to the owner?

I guess Uber/taxi drivers would benefit, any other situations I’m missing?

    • If positioned right, it could also record side impacts/crashes

    • +1

Check out those videos where people get assaulted, sometimes by police. One guy was lucky to have it when an off duty police punched him. Otherwise it's his words against the police

  • My viofo a119 mini 2 is excellent but fell off once in the heat, and now falls off nearly every day. Any suggestions to restick it?

  • I've had a Viofo 118 and 119 for years now, great little cameras.

  • Can any of these be usb powered? my current mi dashcam connects to my usb ports but it keeps overheating during hot days

  • Might be a silly question, but do i need to buy the VIOFO HK3-C Type-C Hardwire Kit for A139/A139 PRO kit?

    • +1

Only if you intend on hard wiring it instead of running it through the 12v plug.

  • Had one of these for 3ish years now. Amazing, just make sure you don't put a crap memory card in it as it will then struggle to delete and record at the same time. Mine came bundled with a low speed card from the seller.

  • Anyone else unable to checkout with Paypal and find a workaround? Have tried 3 different browsers and 2 different devices, Paypal window just appears to auto-close in every scenario.

    • +1

Had the same problem, you just go back and forward from shipping to payment until it pops up.

  • I have viofo a129 duo but on my 4th battery due to hardwire, draining the battery and bad system from Mazda. I have been lucky that dealer changed it every time it happen out of warranty which ended in 2 months time. Anyone else have suggestions on how to keep the hardwire and not getting the battery drained? It was install by qualified auto electrician so not surw what is happening.

    • The hardwire kit should have a switch on it to select your battery system - 12 volts, and it should isolate the dash cam if the voltage drops too low which leaves enough in the car battery to start the car. Maybe your auto electrician left the switch set to 24 volts?

Thanks OP, gonna shoot my wedding with this.

  • It good to have 4k resolution. I wonder what are the pro to get this instead of the other 2k dashcam with affordable price…

  • Anyone know if this fully will work offline? IE. To access the recordings/other functionality of the device and app? If I connect to my home network with no internet access, can I connect to it via phone app or device hosted website?

  • I've been running the Viofo A119 V2 for 5 years without major issues. The major limitations I see at the moment is lack of WiFi, max 128GB SD card and night time footage is a bit meh.

Is it worth upgrading to the A229 Plus or PRO? Is it worth having 2CH? Ideally I would still like a dashcam with a screen.

    • +1

Starvis 2 sensor is a really big difference in picture quality cf first gen

      • Thanks, which one would you recommend getting?

I'm using it mostly to capture roadtrip footage but also in case someone decides to smash into me and do a runner.

        • +1

if you're not concerned about a rear camera the VIOFO A119 MINI 2 at $157.25 might be a decent upgrade and it has the new sensor!

          • +1

@YourImag1nat1on: I watched the reviews and pulled the trigger on Aliexpress. $160 with the CPL filter and 4.5% cashback from cashrewards is a pretty good deal. Thanks for sharing.

  • I have the A119 V3 and its started making a sound like in a magic show(chimes) and shuts down and restarts over and over.
Anyone have any ideas as to what this could be?

  • Just wondering if there is any decent dash cams that can be powered by USB port only via a cigarette lighter port? Mainly as I only have one lighter in my older car and so I'd love to have my USB charger for phone still functional rather than losing the whole outlet to a dash cam. I presume there isn't?

I know there's the option of getting it hardwired but was abit nervous on doing it. Super easy supposedly but as someone who never touches cars just makes me a bit nervous. Paying someone seems to cost as much as most of the camera bundles as well.

    • YouTube is your friend. Very easy with the right tools.

    • The newer ones can be powered via usb-a to usb-c cable. and I think they come with a dual USB port plug for you cigarette lighter port.

  • Is CPL useful?

How good it is in detecting door dents from careless people opening door at right parking space?

  • Can someone tell me what's the difference between this one and the one op linked? This is $15 cheaper

The one included in your link is not rear dashcam but interior cam (to look inside your own car)

Thank you, I didn't see that somehow. Just pulled the trigger including hardwire kit and fuse tape $413
