I have the VS1 and A229 Pro, A229 Pro is definitely very good quality but can be out of folks budgets.
Can someone give me the lowdown on how these work? Do they record to a local storage? Can they record when the car is off?

The newer ones including this one I think you can connect to your phone and download any relevant footage via the phone wirelessly. I have an old one (A119S) which I just take the micro SD card out and save the clip and put back in. Does the job really well
Mine is connected via cigarette lighter so turns on and off with ignition. I think you can wire them to car battery and have it running while parked. But I haven’t seen a need for this and you need to get it wired in a way so it doesn’t totally drain your battery
Yes and yes, but only for a limited time (they run off your car's battery. You need to buy the hardwire kit with it that will shut down the cam when your car battery runs a little low to avoid juicing out your battery)
These come bundled with a HK3 wiring loom which allows them to function in park mode when the key is turned off - it will also turn the cam totally off if the battery falls below a certain voltage so as not to drain it to a point that the vehicle will not start.
