[VIC] Free Lunchtime Unlimited Yum Cha (Save $64) on Saturdays for People Named David (Min. 2 Person Booking) @ David's, Prahran

880

From Concrete Playground:

For all of autumn, David's in Prahran is serving up free yum cha on Saturday afternoons to anyone named David (or other iterations like Davide, Davito and Daveed). That means Davids can feast on unlimited food for two hours, filling the table with baos, dumplings, Peking duck, chicken ribs, pork belly, salt and pepper calamari and a stack of other classic yum cha dishes without paying a cent.

The fine print?

Davids, you will need to bring along at least one mate. If they're not a David, they'll have to pay the $64 for unlimited yum cha. But being the good bloke you are, you'll split it with your guest, so you both get half-price yum cha.

Davids is rated 4.4 and unlimited yumcha is $64pp. If 2 Davids dine, it's free! Or 1 David & 1 Non-David $32pp.

What's the difference between all those other places that offer free food or drinks on someone's birthday and what these guys are doing? Would that be discrimination as well?

      • +14

No because everyone has a birthday, didn't think that one through did you?

        • -6

Everyone has a name too - this place happened to choose David to be the recipient of free food.

          • +2

            @kevmev12:

            Everyone has a name too

            Oh dear… Try thinking a little harder…

        • +2

What about birthdays on Feb 28? Leap discrimination!

        • You can change your name to David, it’s a matter of choice and effort

          • -2

@cloudy: You can also apparently change your sex these days, so there is no such thing as sexual discrimination by that logic.

            • -1

@Bdawg: That's old news - I'm sure I read somewhere last week that some girl identifies as a dog… You can now change species if you identify as one.

I don't understand how society works anymore.

              • -1

                @kevmev12: It doesn't work anymore.

                • @Bdawg: Oh let’s all start to run around like headless chooks.

                  Oh the drama dog

            • -5

              @Bdawg:

You can also apparently change your sex these days, so there is no such thing as sexual discrimination by that logic.

Your logic is sound, but then logic was never strong with the left.

              • +1

@1st-Amendment: Sex [sic] discrimination - yet another thing you know nothing about apparently. Why am I not surprised?

                • @Igaf:

yet another thing you know nothing about apparently

I said logic wasn't strong with the left and then you went and proved my point. The lack of self-awareness here is hilarious.

                  Why am I not surprised?

I already answered this question above. Because logic is something your don't seem to grasp so you are constantly triggered by logical statements.

You don't need to reply to this telling us how you feel again. That would only further demonstrate my point. Just give us a logical argument that shows that OP's statement is not logically valid.

                  This should be fun….

                  • @1st-Amendment: As the saying goes, fools rush in where angels fear to tread. We can guess what Bdawg was implying but beyond that the best we make of the original comment and your enthusiastic yet thoughtless reply is that neither of you has any concept of what (unlawful) discrimination is, let alone what it involves.

Apart from having no understanding of what sex discrimination is, the statement you blindly rushed in to endorse has no logic whatsoever, it's a classic non-sequitur, not dissimilar to one of yours I highlighted on a previous occasion. Do you need a link to remind you? Clearly you haven't subsequently informed yourself of the difference, nor have you bothered to learn how to apply such simple English terms. Here's another illogical non-sequitur (tautology intended) for you to contemplate: Your logic is sound, but then logic was never strong with the left.

For homework, look up the word syllogism and discuss how it differs from deductive reasoning.

As I've previously suggested during our "discussions", blind ideology like yours is a choice, as is ignorance. Worked out why volcanoes are negative climate feedbacks yet?

                    • @Igaf: (US) "First Amendment" breaks all modern logic anyway.. at least those who fight for it, let alone someone using that as a bargain website forum handle. You think the comprehend logic this way? lol.

                      • @bchliu: The nick is irony writ large but it does give some indication of what to expect. His bizarro-world tendencies are legendary, or would be if anyone cared. He does struggle with adult "argument" which is why I occasionally like to help him out with pointers most learnt either through educaton or experience.

                      • @bchliu:

You think the comprehend logic this way?

                        More comedy…

                    • @Igaf:

                      As the saying goes..

So as expected, yet another emotional outburst. This is comedy gold…

                      • @1st-Amendment: I'm sure I've suggested this before but it's worth repeating - you need a new playbook. I doubt puerile tosh like that worked for you in high school so why would you expect it to work now? How's your "logic" and basic English comprehension homework coming along? I suggested it so that you wouldn't continually repeat the same errors, even though your posting history suggests you're immune to both learning and advice.

                        • @Igaf:

I doubt puerile tosh like that

                          Emotion…

But then logic was never strong with the left….

                          • @1st-Amendment: Back to the old childish selective quoting out of context I see. Old habits die hard but if you work hard on self-awareness they can usually improve. Seems emotion is another term you have a cursory understanding of and need to review. Add it to your ever growing list of my-dog-ate-it homework.

Repeating tosh is another well-known trait of your demographic - probably a combination of needing to convince yourselves and not having knowledge of the topic you're attempting to comment on, let alone the wit to argue your case. As I've said previously, there's a simple fix.

                            • @Igaf:

Repeating tosh is another well-known trait of your demographic - probably a…

                              Emotion…

But then logic was never strong with the left….

                              • @1st-Amendment: Is that your best shot or are you testing out your own version of AI - Artificial Idiocy - out?

Interesting /s that you think emotion and logic are the same thing. You should work that into your paper explaining why greenhouse gas and global warming aren't linked despite tens of thousands of climate scientists and mountains of evidence suggesting they are. If I may make a suggestion, perhaps you could open your paper with - "Climate science is based on emotion not evidence, and here's why." Always good to grab your audience's attention up front. I can see the audience reaction now: This should be fun….

Btw, when is that paper due out? If I were you I'd aim for the 2025 SCF . No need to add me to the paper's acknowledgements, for obvious reasons I'm happy for you to claim it as all your own work.

                                • @Igaf:

Is that your best shot or are you testing out your own version of AI - Artificial Idiocy - out?

You've almost worked out. Now see if you can join the final dot to reveal where you went so wrong…

                                  • @1st-Amendment:

reveal where you went so wrong

Coud it be giving you "credit" for being an adult, or maybe assuming you have at least some limited capacity for, but not an inclination towards, rational thought? That you've carefully disguised your massive knowledge of topics by regularly posting puerile and inane comments consistent with a particular north American demographic? That your real understanding of how science works, and what certain English terms mean, is inversely proprotional to your written opinions on this website?

                                    • @Igaf: Imagine being able to live rent free in someone's head for so long…

                                      • @1st-Amendment: That's a new one, you should [try to] patent it. Your posts are indeed memorable since they're now my new yardstick for down the rabbit hole asininity. Quite some feat given the amount of it I've come across from your demographic over the years.

It will undoubtedly come as huge surprise to you but many thinking aduts can find room "in their heads" for almost everything - including reason, reality, science, logic, reason, society, empathy, reason… They even know the value of understanding what words mean before we, woops, they, use them. Shocking, I know, but if one day you finally open your mind you might find all sorts of possibilities exist beyond the walls of ideological blindness.

        • Everyone can change their name to David. Did you think that one through?

    • +4

Yeah try being named Neil. Us Neils get zero freebies or even those overpriced tourist nameplates.

      • +13

At least Bort gets a nameplate.

      • +5

At least Neil is an easy to spell and pronounce name.

        Try being named silverrat23.

        • Yes, I have a mate named Niel.

      • +1

Hello fellow Neil! I too long for freebies under this alias.

      • +6

So you're saying you get… nil benefits?

      • You need the Anniversary when man landed on the moon.

      • What about Nils, right out! So close, it was nearly there!

      • +1

My bro in law named niel

    • +4

      Yes it is daviding

Comment like this is the Cancer in our Society. You offer something, they will still find way to protest something.

      • Yep - and they find some way to say it's 'discrimination' because the deal didn't apply to them. And what is the user implying by saying it's discriminating for a yum cha restaurant?

      • -3

Comment like this is the Cancer in our Society

Inappropriate use of capital letters is cancer…

    • Just fine a friend named David. Seems easy enough. They'll let you fill the table with all sorts of food at once, unlike other all you can eat Asian places that bring things out one plate at at time with a delay between plates.

      • +4

How much will you fine them though?

        • +1

          About tree fiddy.

        • hang around out the front until another david turns up, should be no shortage of david’s, if a non david and a mate turn up, go in with the david as mates have to pay anyway and buy the mate a beer ….

      • David's has been mentioned quite a few times as one of the best yum cha restaurants in Melbourne.

    • Boost used to do the Name Game a while back.

    • -1

Why don’t you grow up and get over it?

    • They not refusing other names, just offering a discount for certain names.

  • +1

What's the outlay for a name change? Just weighing up the value.
Has to come in under $60 I guess, otherwise it kills the deal.

    • +2

you could say being a David is priceless

    • What if you insert David into your middle name,
and then go to the restaurant,
and claim David is still "part" of your name!

      • "everyone calls me David"

        • That's commented here too,
but how to prove that with a Photo ID ?

At least, with a middle name change,
you get to keep your real name and change the middle name,
until the next OzB offer…and change that middle name again, haha

    • +1

      David

  • +3

Hahaha I'm so keen if any ozB Davids want to go. It's a great restaurant. I'm 29 and a standard yuppie living in the area.

    • I haven't been for a while but yes, it's a good restaurant, more Northern Chinese than Cantonese.

      • +1

        Yep, I like it. Fresher.

      • Depends on what they identify as

  • +3

    I identify as David…

  • +3

Can I identify as David for a day ?

  • +2

Smart advertising, basically pick a common name, charge one person for the price of two, say the person with the common name is actually eating for free so they'll feel obligated to split the bill, end up paying exactly what they want you to pay

    • +2

… but they’re not paying the same? They’re eating half price, and it’s a good deal even at full price.

  • my english name is David do i qualify?

  • +7

The yum cha deal is known to be a good deal even at full price, so definitely do this if you can.

Don’t be a (profanity) and try scam them though. It’s hard enough running a restaurant, let alone a good one.

    Enjoy 🍷

    • "Don’t be a (profanity) and try scam them though"

This definitely needs to be stressed.

I'm sure most Ozbargainers aren't but some take it to the extreme.

  • +3

This reminds me of the free Amazon Alexa if (on FB) your name was Alex or Alexa.

    DIVA’D

  • Great deal. Good for a nice lunch out where you really want to stuff your face in a nice setting. Food a little westernised but still great. Definitely recommend, hard to get into as generally booked out for their all you can eat sessions.

  • My other half’s middle name is David. Maybe when can negotiate a 1/2 price deal. :)

    • Like you said, it's a half, and it's a middle name, so 1/4 at best.

      • Every little bit helps :)
