Can anyone comment on ESR battery quality? I love their cases and mounts but unsure on their batteries

  • +3

Interesting that the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 4,400 mAh battery yet this 6,000 mAh battery pack only yields 0.7 charges according to their marketing. Either large efficiency loss, battery not as large as they claim or incorrect advertising.

    • +5

On battery banks they have a "battery capacity" and "rated capacity" so I'm guessing efficiency loss. My 10k mAh is rated at 6k mAh.

    • +4

Looks like you have some misunderstanding about power banks. You normally get only around 65% of the claimed compacity

      • +1

        Possibly, but, 0.7 * 4,400 = 3,080. So that's 50% of the 6,000 capacity. Surely that's not correct?

        • +8

Additional loss from wireless charging vs cable charging

          • +1

@CodeXD: Ah yes, that makes sense. Tons of heat generated as energy loss. Thanks.

    • -2

Wireless is inefficient. And I bet Apple doesn't couldn't their battery ratings even if they wanted to, but "ESR" may be able to make whatever claim they want just like every other cheap product with a battery.

    • Powerbank advertised capacity is rated at 3.7v but it outputs 5v to charge your phone so you need to calculate the 5v mah to get the real capacity.

      Actual capacity = 3.7V x Advertised capacity (10000mAh) x efficiency (0.9) / 5V = 6660mAh.

So, this means a 10000mAh power bank can charge 3000mAh smartphone twice.

This 6000mah powerbank should have a capacity of 4440mah@5V, so assuming 100% efficiency it can charge the iphone one time
This and the inefficiencies of wireless charging

      • +2

The iPhones battery is also ~3.7V nominal, like the vast majority of small lithium ion batteries, so this isn't correct. The conversion from 3.7V -> 5V -> 3.7V does of course incur an efficiency penalty. Almost 50% is a bit unusual, but makes sense given the wireless charging.

      • Ignore vipers reply. He has the only iPhone in the world that has a 5v battery.

For normal iphones: charger sends voltage of between 5-9v, up to 3A, to the phone, then the phone converts it back down to 3.8v-4.2v to charge the battery (depending on how full it is). The phone battery stores/outputs power at 3.7v.

Efficiencies vary along the way, especially with wireless charging, but the batteries in both devices store/output at 3.7v. Which is why their ratings are interchangeable. You just have to account for some losses in transferring between devices.

        • -1

I did not say the iphone has a 5v battery, i said the powerbank needs to output 5v to charge the phone and when the voltage changes you need to convert the mah to see its true capacity

          • -1

            @viper8548: You're implying that the phones 4400mah rating is @ 5v. It's not. The iPhone battery is rated at 4400mah @ 3.7v.

At no point is calculating mah @ 5v relevent. If so, then you should convert the iPhone battery to 5v too, and then also make a set of mah numbers for when it's being charged at 9v.

  • Great first post, bought one thx OP

    • Also mention to stack with cashback

      • darn, missed the cashback.

        • +1

same here, 12% at TCB or 6% at SB

  • will it work on my iphone 11

    • +1

Yes, however it will not attach via magsafe.

  • +4

sweet ordered one black and white one for $28.58

  • I bought the magsafe direct from ESR store and its cheaper than the Amazon store, and interestingly, they dispatch my order via Amazon logistics. Good stuff. And don't forget your shopback cashback!

    • +3

12% on Topcashback. They even list the discount code too (PNT30 which gives the same discount)

  • Will this work on non-iphones? I have S23 Ultra with magsafe case. Reckon it will be slow charge?

    • +1

Can report back - but deal will be expired when i receive mine.

    • +1

Nevermind, going to cancel my order. Thought it was magsafe but it's not.

      • +1

        Description

6000mAh MagSafe-style wireless power bank with adjustable built-in kickstand

        • Ah, i thought it required their "Halolock" case. nevermind going to keep order

    • I have a s23 ultra with a magsafe case and charger and it works well. Not sure about this one but the only issue I get is if my case is too large around the lenses then the magsafe charger doesn't always align easily. Otherwise it works well. Magsafe is the future, hope Samsung build in something compatible in the next gen.

      • Qi 2.0 stipulates magnetic specifications. Highly likely alot of Android phones will adopt this in the future. Afaik the magnetic alignment is basically the same as magsafe

    • Received mine today. Works well with my iphone 14 and s23 ultra with magsafe case. magnets are strong and able to hold s23 ultra up by holding the powerbank.

Looks to only block a slight bit off the 10x telephoto

      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/424371/111809/img_6707…

Shaking the phone while holding the magsafe powerbank seems to still hold it.

Seems to hold up well with iPhone 14 too

      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/424371/111810/20240411…

Starts auto charging when attached to phone which is nice.

  • cheers OP

  • Bought 2, love ESR products.

Anyone know if these are cabin safe?

    • Anyone know if these are cabin safe?

  • nice price but qi2 will be the trend. guess thats why these older versions start discounting.

  • +5

I think @easternculture is on the lookout for a powerbank.

    • +6

I am tempted but have managed to resist so far, no sure for how long though

  • thanks bought 1

  • thanks op

  • For those who purchased is the payment processing in Australia or is it overseas ie international transaction fees been charged?

  • Thanks OP, bought 2

  • This will make cheeky birthday presents for people this year.

    • How do you know they have wireless charging phones?

      • +3

I'll pay a PI to uncover that info for me.

  • Does anyone know the wireless charging output? Is it 7.5 or 15W?

    • +2

      7.5w brother

  • when would it be delivered? im going overseas on friday next week

  • I have this but feels bad using it on my phone, both get extremely hot.

    • Can it be charged via a cable as well or just wireless?

    • thanks for sharing your feedback! do you still usually use this given that it gets hot?

      • No I'm looking for a new one

  • +2

Not sure why I need it but bought 3.

    • I also bought 3 [2xBlack 1 x White].

Worse come worse there's 2 gifts there for iPhone users, otherwise portable chargers one can have at work / home / roaming.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Probably don’t need one but bought one anyway lol

  • +1

    top post bud

  • 7.5w is hard to justify my tech savvy. Hope to see the next version or so with at least >10w and >10Ah.

    • +3

      Bruh it’s $15 delivered

      • Got a 15w one for a few $ more from myDeal. The wattage drops once the battery gets hot. So, it's been sitting on the table collecting dust. Not an e-waste yet as still handy one day.

Your ozbargain cert. has been renewed.

  • +4

Site must be OZB'd as can't add to cart or do anything!

    • I with great patience managed to get one through and check out. takes forever though and 30min total. No idea why as kind of useless gadget being only 6000mAh. One for bedside perhaps.

  • +3

    Website is slow for me

  • I bought the 10000mah version ages ago, and have probably used it twice. Wireless charging is so slow it's very annoying to try and top up your phone. Better off plugging in for 10 minutes to a fast charger.

    • 12w is not considered fast charging but your 10Ah one might do 20w.

  • Expired.

  • I got my order through. Required great patience. I did receive a message that the items were out of stock for Australia but PayPal went through anyway.

It's most likely going to get refunded but worth a try at this price.

Wireless charging sucks. Too slow and too much energy loss

    • It great for winter, nice and warm.

      • +1

Pocket hand warmer with built-in wireless charging

        • Right there! 😂😂😂😂

    • You can choose to charge via wire instead

      • yes, instead of saying this is a charger, it is more like a powerbank

    • really depends on the application, sometime i just want something in pocket, each to start charging, one less item to carry around(cable), and I dont depend on it, so it is just a semi way of charging. it is like a bandaid solution for me, i dont need full-on proper charger.

  • damn missed it. Would this work on a Samsung S24 Ultra with a maglock case (from ESR even).

I'm not familiar with maglock. does it just mean theres a circular magnet? and doesnt actually mean anything about charging technology?

Im not even familiar with wireless charging these days. Arent there multiple wireless technologies on phones these days? Qi and something else? What do I need to look for? I cant seem to even find out from s24 ultra specs.
the names are so confusing. Is Fast Wireless charging the name of the tech? is that Qi?

  • +10

    Just bought one now. thanks.
    A bit of hack:
    1. Click https://www.esrgear.com/categories/magsafe-power-banks/
    2. Find the product 'ESR 6,000mAh Kickstand Wireless Power Bank' but don't click it yet.
    3. Click on 'Quick Shop' icon under the product image and Add to cart.
    4. Put the coupon code and pay.

    • Wonder if the "Quick Shop" bypasses their stock level check. Time will tell for those that buy. Nice find (if it works and they ship). :-)

      • It does they send u a email saying order is delayed tho

    • Thanks for the tip!

    • Cheers mate!

    • Thanks mine just shipped from Amazon using this method.
