Just got email from Bing Lee, Big Savings on Samsung Smart 3D TVs for 4 Days Only.

This model PS51E550 has the Wi-Fi built in, Bing Lee has confirmed this.

I have this one from JB, which is really good for its AllShare/DLNA function, it plays 1080p mkv/avi etc from my DLNA server over Wi-Fi with no lags at all. (MiniDLNA running on a 1.2GHz ARM Linux box).

The one I got from JB also includes 2 Active 3D Glass(sell for $98 each separately) , which I think is better than passive one. Tried with PS3 3D games, great results.

Bing Lee's extend total five year warranty only for $189 which is nice, JB charged me $129 or something for just 3 year total warranty.

What you think?
If you need to know more details about this TV, I can tell you.
Wall mount ready, thinner than thought in Plasma class.
It's heavy and big, I think it has around 30KG.

And don't forget the $30 cash back with Amex Card

Recommend to take the extend warranty, Plasma TVs are good for their colors, but is much likely to have hardware failure over the years then LED ones. And of course, it is much heavier and consumes more electricity(640kWh per year).

      extend warrant

No. If it fails after the one year warranty is up, call Samsung and talk about your statutory warranty under Australian law (google this - basically you can make them fix it free if their warranty was unreasonably short for an item this expensive).

I get this… but its not like anyone is being deceived. Everyone knows its a 1 year warranty.

low-level surges, watch-time, transportation from store, etc - i think its unreasonable for a manufacturer to have to account for this outside 1 year.

you should know that plasmas are not as reliable as LCD technology anyway.

Its not like anyone is forcing you to buy their TV.

        • make an informed decision.

"Everyone knows its a 1 year warranty" - the Law does not agree with this concept

"i think its unreasonable for a manufacturer to have to account for this outside 1 year" - the Law seems to state sth different to your opinion..

Besides, most credit cards offer extended warranty

    • Electricity: I would like to get a handle on the extra cost of running plasma versus LED.
Where do you get the 640kWh per year from? Is that total power for this unit, or extra power consumption over LED?

So how many $ more to run plasma over a year?

      • The TV has a sticker on it says this. If you 10 hours a day. So if you just watch two hours a day, it only consumes 128kWh per year, which is around $ 30? It is 4.5 star energy rating out of 6, pretty good. Don't think you can save much on a led one compared to this, maybe several dollars but a lot worse color

"it plays 1080p mkv/avi etc from my DLNA server over Wi-Fi with no lags at all. " - does this have a jukebox/movie cover style interface, or just file listings?

    • +1

I don't have covers for the medias on that server, I don't think it will have that kind of interface.

If you want better DLNA play experience, you might just ignore this built-in one and opt for the others like running XBMC on your home server and connect it to this TV. XBMC has great interface and functions (support work as AirPlay targets now, so I don't need Apple TV). Bought today's N40L home server deals?

If you just need AirPlay, use Apple TV is much quicker.

I don't think Google is releasing the Nexus Q soon.

PS3 has built in DLNA as well but you would need to run PS3 Media Server/Universal Media Server on one of your computer to have the media files encoded on the fly which I don't like. I think XBMC is better.

And if you have Samsung's phones, they have AllShare/DLNA

I'm currently running YAMJ on my server, which scrapes movie info and covers from the internet and displays them in a movie jukebox cover manner similar to xbmc, and a Popcorn Hour media player to browse and play the files. But the popcorn hour is getting old, as is my tv, so if I can reduce the number of devices I have in my lounge room while upgrading my tv, it's a double bonus.

I used to run xbmc on an xbox1 back in the day, but have left it long behind due to not being powerful enough to play HD files. It was awesome back then, and I can only imagine how awesome it is these days.

    Hello aboutconfig.
Confirming it does have wifi and we are correcting the error on the website now. Thank you for the post.

I have one model earlier (d550).

Beautiful picture (colour beats LEDs at double the price) and pretty good MP4/MKV compatibility.

Panel cracked spontaneously (within warranty). But Samsung sent someone within 48 hours who fixed it for free.

    Rep,
I am considering buying this model and would like to know:
How many active 3D glasses does this panel come with?
Is the price negotiable? Whether for panel, extended warranty, or inclusions?

  • +1

Too much of a gamble if you dont know if it has wifi or 2 pairs of active glasses. Thats almost 300 dollars value there. Binglee care to comment what you get?
