Don't buy this for the distributor as it's useless, the other side is a self leveling tamper with depth adjustment so it's much easier to get consistent results if you fill portafilter basket to the top then use a flat edge before tamping.

  • Consistent Brew- Leveling your grounds before tamping creates a uniform and consistent tamp.
  • Adjustable Depth - Set your desired tamping depth for consistent tamping pressure every time.

  • Posting this for the tamper end, not the distributor because it doesn't do much.

This really improved my tamping, I get it perfectly flat every time with the same pressure which reduces variables. This makes dialing in much easier.

    1. if the tamper levels itself by resting on top of the portafilter, how do you apply pressure to your tamp without a spring?
    2. one thing I hate about the tamper that comes with the Bambino Plus is that it's slightly smaller than the basket, so you never tamp the entire surface area. Anyone know if this one fits better?

I replaced the bambino one with one of the popular branded 53mm spring loaded (the one that comes with 3 spring strengths) and use the lightest one. It’s easy and works, but more on the expensive side (5x more than this deal)

      • Is it a Normcore by any chance? I think that's the one I was looking at recently

        • yep that's the one, i wasn't sold on the whole "palm" tampering thing and stuck with traditional one

These are not really self-levelling. They rely on you setting the correct depth and when the ring hits the lip of the portafilter it will be pretty close to level.

However, if you have over-filled the portafilter, you might not be able to tamp down enough to hit the rim. If you have under-filled the portafilter, you might not compress the puck enough, but what is there will be pretty level.

      • Why would you over fill it though? As mentioned in the description -

Leveling your grounds before tamping creates a uniform and consistent tamp.

I use the back edge of a butter knife, works great.

        • The Bambino comes with a nifty dosing tool called The Razor™, I've been too lazy to use it lately, but your post reminded me I probably should

          • @beltdrive: the purpose of the breville razor is to scrape off excess coffee after tamping to make sure the puck clears the shower screen (also to check there is enough coffee in the basket which isnt so important)

            • @Nitr0: Doesn't that count as volumetric dosing?

        • I dose by weight not volume, so different beans and different grind settings will give a different volume in the portafilter.

Just an observation: if you have levelled the grounds before tamping, an even pressure with any correctly sized tamper should give you a level puck.

I'm not bagging the tamper. I have a similar one (different brand) and use it occasionally. It's just the seller does not describe it as self-levelling.

      • Understood. I'm too lazy for single dosing, so I dose with a timer and I suspect my coffee doses wouldn't be consistent enough for this method

I used The Razor™ to set the correct depth on this tamper.

          • @WatchNerd: So coffee in, compress? then razor? - Then use that as the gauge for this tamper?
Obviously want to get as much coffee into the basket as possible.

              @elitistphoenix: I do the same as @WatchNerd.
Extended the tamper out so it's the same depth as The Razor, ground coffee in, break it up with the WDT tool and then put the tamp in.
              No coffee lost.
