  • as someone who's never owned an iPhone and possibly switching..

how does one check how long the phone will receive updates for?

like on pixels/Samsung you just check their website and it'll say "till Oct 2028" etc.

all I'm finding is random 3rd party sites about

"well based off the current trend it should last X long"

    thanks!

    • +5

iphones typically give around 5 years of software support. For example, the iphone XS is on iOS 17 (The latest), and it was released in September 2018.

      • thanks mate, still find it odd that there's no concrete cut off or anything from apple.

        • +7

More than likely not wanting to be locked into anything or the fact it’s unwritten that it is minimum five years.

Whereas Android they need to let people know because even within the same manufacturer the software support could be different ranging from one major android update through to xxx amount.

        • -2

People are used to that with android as they're mostly made to throw away.
They are just not built to last. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/tCZYpcuXTrM
You need to give them some false sense of security when you don't have service centers everywhere and barely any youthful person touches the product anymore. It's all psychological stuff to make people feel like they aren't throwing their money away. Meanwhile iphone 6 has volte and got a security update last year lol.

          • +2

@musicinbed69: I buy Android devices because I can make them last (and because I want to own my device), but I've got nothing against anyone who purchases an iPhone. Just use what you prefer.

        • +1

There is one difference to be aware of, unlike Android, with iOS, if you don't update the iOS, you will not be able to use the latest version of quite a lot of common / essential apps. For example, a family member has an iPad that runs an old version of iOS because there are apps which won't run with newer versions of iOS (the app developers stopped working on it). There is, however, a problem using that old iOS. youTube app does not work (because the latest compatible version with that iOS no longer works). Had to use Safari (because I think Chrome update to the latest version is also blocked due to iOS being too old).

No doubt you get more iOS updates, but there is a necessity to have them. Furthermore, Apple can enforce a remote de-registration of a device if it is running an iOS that's too old. I used to have an iPhone that runs an iOS that can run 32-bit apps (I bought quite a few of those apps). One day, Apple did a remote de-register and forced me to update the iOS on that device to the latest version. I had to do it otherwise that iPhone is essentially a brick.

          • @netsurfer: The update theory does not stand as it once did (apple) , of course ios is highly optimised but android is catching up . Samsung offers four years plus one of security patches. I believe google is now offering seven years of software which is overkill in my opinion .

            • @Murkymerv: Only for Samsung flagship phones. The really popular Moto G54 ($149 from JB Hi Fi) gets only 1 OS update and was released less than 1 year ago. Furthermore, by releasing it before 1 month before Android 14 is officially available, it came with Android 13.

Other than Google phones, all other phones take time to get latest Android OS.

My main point was, due to the nature of Android apps being less tightly coupled to Android OS, Android phones don't need to be on the latest OS in order to use the latest versions of common apps.

              • @netsurfer: Apparently my A15 5g is getting four major updates too , i would've been happy with two after 14 however we shall see , and wether i have the phone in three years time is very unlikely.

              • @netsurfer: All the cheap Samsungs get long support now. Same with pixel. The problem for iOS is most of the core apps were updated only with OS updates. Where Android has core apps separate to the OS updates. So it means that older versions of Android are supported long because of all the fragmentation.

I’m glad that Apple has allowed emulation apps back in the AppStore. This means you can emulate old systems rather than playing those bad mobile pay to win games.

            • @Murkymerv: Samsung offers seven years as well now.

        • a lot of the devices continue to get security updates after that time, but not feature updates

        • Not official but this gives an idea of past performance.

          https://cdn.statcdn.com/Infographic/images/normal/5824.jpeg

    • how long each model got iOS updates is on the internet. I checked when I went from Android to iOS.

    • Can always consider what you get buying a 3-5 year old iPhone for $1kish compared to what you get buying a new Android. Support duration is going to be the same or less with iPhone and the tech older and less compelling.
Logic says either pay the ridiculous amount for a new one if you need to be part of the icrowd or just stick with new tech and fresh Android devices. Buying old models for $$$'s might not be considered to be well thought out.

    • +9

My iPhone 6s got 7 years of updates.

      • +1

Same, the battery was starting to really go by then so that’s about as long as you’d need

        • +1

My 6s Plus battery health is down to 89%, has iOS 15.8.2 which came out on the 5th March 2024 as a security update so doesn't have the iOS 16 or 17 features but still good as a backup. Not bad for a phone released 25th September 2015. I get about 10 days from a charge as it doesn't have lots of apps running. Still the original battery LOL.

          • +3

@GCSteve: Have you taken it out of the box yet?

            • +1

@TEER3X: Both the 6s plus and iPhone 13 were taken out of the box within minutes of getting the box.

    • -4

Too late for switching. iPhone Co is lagging the best features for le$$ with now same support warranty & much better AI (eg superior Galaxy S23 Ultra with irreplaceable S-pen & better optics) of huge choice of providers, inc very cheap Chinese brands (everything is built there)

      • +15

I treat my phone like a refrigerator… I pay for reliability and consistency. I don’t need anything fancy but I need something that works, as secure as possible, has updates for the life of the phone.

Not saying the S23 doesn’t fit that bill, but comparing features etc on top of the line phones is incongruous.

People get what they are comfortable with.

        • -3

Heard on the radio mikey and emma if you own a samsung and your single. its like eww, undatable nerd and like cheapskate.

After hearing it on the radio. I got to admit i feel like its the truth

        • +5

This is somewhat how I feel, I was sick of dealing with the unreliability and inconsistency of my Android phone with an Exynos modem that didn't work properly, flaky Bluetooth that consistently refused to connect to devices or randomly disconnected, Google pay that would fail at random because I 'moved too fast' or it suddenly didn't recognise my fingerprint, phone unlocking in my pocket and messaging friends garbage and random pictures, dialing 000 in my pocket multiple times a day, apps crashing regularly and requiring a cache and data wipe, apps chewing battery for no reason and requiring a force close to stop battery consumption, screen with blue and pink banding and noticeable blue hue overall, auto brightness that has a mind of it's own, google assistant somehow being worse than Siri for my use case, but I guess if I had an s-pen I'd be happy.

Some of these problems have workarounds, such as changing developer options to make Bluetooth more stable, and turning off tap to wake to prevent the dialing of 000, but the rest I had to live with and fight for 3 months before I just gave up.

I do love tinkering with things, and have been an android user since the Galaxy Nexus, and gone down the custom ROM rabbit hole for years, but at this point in life I just want my phone to work so I can spend time on other hobbies.

Having said all that, I am still open to trying a Samsung phone if they make a small model without an Exynos modem in future, and that Nothing 5a looks pretty cool, but I'm hesitant as I know little about their track record.

          • @TekniqAU: I went from Samsung to android recently. My god why didnt i make the change sooner.

The camera feature on Samsung yeh sure its great heaps of features. but to the average user aka me getting older and just want to take a pic of the kids etc i honestly don't have time to fiddling around with settings.

Not to mention none of these samsung store, google play store, messages combine messaged. Way too much bloatware, even tho i removed it

      • +6

lol most consumers don't care about stylus pens or having the absolute best specs. it's just a phone at the end of the day.

        • -4

S-pen is the most productive part of the phone (I used smartphones since 2001 & most had stylus, when S.Jobs had Nokia1100 ;). S-pen is much more than rubber stylus. It's like wireless mouse on PC to navigate & hover functionality & many remote BT controls for photos, etc.
Are you defending manual cars when most have moved to more convenient Automatic gear?
Did I mention the other superior feature - DEX that acts as Desktop extension when connected to (4K) monitor for much better Video/Photo, multi-window, connected keyboard/mouse/drive etc…?

          • +6

@taki: I'm glad you enjoy it, but I'm happy to leave the stylus in the 00s, personally

also, DEX sounds neat, but it's of no interest to me. I already have a computer

            • @beltdrive: IT's not simple stylus. Imagine iPad Pro without Pencil which is almost as good as S24 Ultra with DEX (not including superior camera, phone/portability & other advanced/AI Galaxy features).

              • @taki: I used to have a Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, the software stylus features stopped working and the Samsung Store said that I have to do a hard reset to rectify the issue. I was not bother to do so as I needed to ensure my phone and photos were backed up etc.

My Dad has S23 Plus. It's stylus features are also bugging out and I suspect only a hard reset will rectify it.

There's no point in having so many features if what you experience are bugs and beta quality software. Needless to say I got a iPhone 12 mini from the cracker Amaysim sale in March 2023 for around $400 (I know a very different phone to the Note 10+, but I realised that I did not need a big phone as I had a iPad mini already).

The iPhone does have bugs but I can't remember the exactly what glitch I suffered but I do distinctly remember being pleased that it was rectified once I restarted the phone - not a RESET…

When I was young I enjoyed tinkering with my phones, jail broke them, installed custom ROMs etc, but as I grew older I don't have the time for that anymore and am less tolerant of glitches lol. What's the point of DEX on a $1000+ flagship phone? The customers buying high-priced phones would probably have a computer/laptop/tablet…what's the point in using your phone as a computer when you know it's going to be a heavily compromised experience to the more suitable computing device that you already own….this shows that Samsung is not laser focussed on its customers as much as Apple is.

Another point is that the equivalent features that Apple has just work better. Example being Google Assistant vs Siri. The former is much more capable, but it's also a pain to use, as it doesn't understand you half the time so I find that I use the Siri more than I used Assistant.

      • +2

        irreplaceable S-pen

        Doubt.

    • +1

Min 5 years, max of who knows. Previously they used to do it based off hardware limitations rather than a specific time. Apple have never been good at time frames (their desktop upgrade paths are really hard to follow) but one key thing is always RAM. The iPhone XS and the iPhone 13 both have 4GB DDR4x RAM, despite being years apart. iOS 18 is meant to be about AI, and the A12 in the XS is when they introduced the neural engine baked into the chip. So it can probably handle it.

Whereas for Android, Qualcomm or whoever will only offer x number of years of driver updates, so the company knows up front as a general rule. Google could follow Apple but upgrade cycles are good for the corporate world.

iOS 15 is still getting bug and security patches, that goes all the way back to the iPhone 6. Who knows when they'll stop those.

    • +1

      updates up to 5 years.
5-7 years are considered vintage: software may or may not be supported anymore, but will still be serviced.
7+ years, obsolete: will not be serviced anymore.

    • You can check here: https://endoflife.date/iphone
Apple still supports 6S that was released 8 years ago.
The phone being "supported" and "usable" are two different things.
Apple was fined for deliberately slowing down old phones: https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-51413724

I use an iPhone. Within 8 years, high chance of your phone breaking or you'd be attracted to newer phones.
Want an iPhone? I'd get the latest: 15.

  • They all get security updates no matter how old, just not iOS updates.

    https://support.apple.com/en-ke/guide/iphone/iphe3fa5df43/io…

    • +1

6-8 years security support only, not indefinite.

      • iPhone 13 officially released on September 24, 2021

Basically 2027 soonest, 2029 latest. Basically 5 years. Less than $200pa which is same as android.

I used to be on Android but sick of the 1 OS update then if you are lucky it will be 6 months after Android release. Then if you are lucky you'll get a year of security updates. Probably a $300 phone that will last for 2 years and the camera quality is luck of the draw. Then have to deal with porting everything over to the new phone.

        • +3

I love how manufacturers somehow get away with supporting Android security updates for 3 hot minutes and then they're basically expecting you to throw it out and get a new one. Surprised this bullshit hasn't been legislated against yet.

          • @whichwhatwho: Not sure what is going through Android handset maker's brains.

If you have say Apple latest iphone and Samsung latest flagship phone. Similar price. Hardware wise yeah sure Android community says it is superior. But Apple is selling basically the ecosystem not the hardware. Nobody in Android space has been able to sell software yet.

            • @netjock: Apple has amazing security, yeah it limits its uses, but minimalistic. I would rather that better security than empty bank account or hacked system

        • +1

Yeah, all Android device manufacturers are not the same. There's a sweet spot in the price range middle with better manufacturers that provide better support, hardware and outcomes. Most provide 3 years OS support and 5 years security though. This sucks if you are buying really expensive high end devices, but for midrange devices it totally makes sense. I'm happy enough to trade up my phone for new tech every 5 yearsish. Pixel 8 & Pro has 7 years support, this is setting a new bar and I expect we'll see other higher range Android distributors match them soon enough.

I didn't mean to neg the deal either, can't unneg, it's not a bad deal, it's just not really a good one if you like nice new technology

  • Can you just buy a 30 day plan, and then terminate?

    • +1

      I think so

      • +1

Yes, I did a little more checking. It says that you can terminate the plan at any time.

    • Make sure you terminate otherwise they'll keep taking money out each month

    • Before the 30 plan expires, login to your Amaysim account in a browser, turn off auto recharge and change payment method to BPay / Voucher so credit card details are removed.
You will probably still have a sim for testing that can receive calls and SMS for 11 or 12 months after the current plan expires.

    14 128GB $1049, 14 256GB $1249

$200 for 128GB. Am I the only one outraged.

    (I am an iphone user)

    • +2

      Premium storage.

      • vs Premium size ~ 512GB for ~$50 mSD on many un-cut phones ;)

  • there must be a lot of difference so the iPhone13 and 14 has $200 gap :)

    • depending on what network you use, could be way different

  • +4

    I really don’t think it’s worth buying a non-USB C iPhone at this time…..

    • Given there isn’t a substantial difference between 13 and 15 Is it worth $650 for a connector? Lightning cables aren’t hard to find and you can always wireless charge anyway.

      • +2

no, but I really want a phone with USB-C

I guess I'll wait a couple of years for the iPhone 15 to be $850 (adjusting for inflation)

      • +1

Just always feels bad buying into a dead ecosystem. Just my opinion. Maybe it affects me more because atm I have to use dongles like the lightning to USB camera adapter.

      • It's only $350 for a connector. iPhone 15 128gb can be bought for $1,199 on ebay (brand new, with ebay coupons)…. but appreciate everyone has a budget.

I upgraded to iPhone 15, love the USB-C. I have plenty of USB-C cables, don't need to spend extra on wireless charger, can switch between charging Iphone and headphones and every other device easily.

        • $5 MagSafe eBay charger next to the bed and I don’t need to find a cable in the dark. Just get the phone near the charger and it clicks on and lights up charging. So much better than cables

  • I'm still holding out to see what Apple do with the iPhone SE in approx. a year, if rumors are correct, it looks like it will replace the iPhone 13/14 in the lineup.

    • Interesting. That sounds like the phone for me

    • The lightning port is the only negative on the 13/14

      • I personally don't have a problem with the lightning port, and am using an iPhone 12.. the iPhone 13 is tempting, but so close to what I already have.

I assume the 'SE 4' will be priced similarly to the iPhone 13 in this deal, and because newer, will have longer software support, so I'm tying my best to wait.

  • +1

    Join the cult!

    • You have to be impressed with Apple's business model, idonotknowwhy, where 22% off a twice superseded older model is regarded as a bargain.

      • It’s one of the best things about iPhones. You get most of your money back when you upgrade and sell your old phone

  • Is it worth the extra $200 for iPhone 14 vs 13?

    • +4

      I would say no

    • +2

Better cameras and crash detection are two of the main changes on iPhone 14. You do get a better binned CPU (A15), but it is still A15, not A16. One reason people aren't that impressed with iPhone 14 is because it is the first mainstream iPhone that didn't get a new generation of A series processor. iPhone 14 marks the beginning where the standard iPhone and Pro series get different generation of CPUs.

Most likely not worth the extra $200 for most people.

      • Thanks for the info ns.

    • if you're with Vodafone in a Metro area I'd say yes for 5G SA support

    • yes extra 2GB ram, meaning 2 years more support before to the bin.

My wealthy friend will buy Android phone because he's not lazy anymore

  • Does apple store accept price match for this amaysim price?

    • Also, has anyone tried Officeworks price match?

      • Because this week, woolworths specials has 20× points purchasing apple gift card. So $1000 gift card=20000 pts=$100. If apple store can accept price match, it's equivalent to 250+100=350 discount. $949 ip14 128G sounds good.

  • Telstra was selling iPhone 15 (much better than iPhone 14) for $1,199 and would likely repeat soon

  • Should I buy an iPhone if I am using a Windows PC? I have two top-of-the-line Samsung phones and each of them developed ugly green lines on the screen within 2-3 years. I'm not going to reward Samsung with their faulty hardware by buying another phone from them.

    • +1

I don't see any issues in doing so.

    • +1

Samsung does make OLED screens for iPhones. Quite a lot actually (Apple isn't happy about the situation, but for OLED, Samsung's OLED passed Apple's requirements, other makers struggled). So, if you were to buy an iPhone, there is no guarantee you won't get an OLED screen made by Samsung.

I checked my iPhones, the newer one has Samsung OLED, the older one has LG IPS LCD. If you insist on no Samsung OLED, it will restrict your choices of iPhones. My newer iPhone isn't the standard one (which isn't a Pro model), yet it still came with a Samsung OLED display. One of my relatives has an iPhone with 2 green lines on the screen (out of warranty).

You can certainly use an iPhone with a Windows PC. There will be some features that you can't use. For example: Air Drop, Handoff. However, there are apps which can help. There is an app called Intel Unison which may help.

    • Only the Starlight shows up as out of stock for me. Blue, Midnight and Pink still show as in stock.

      • Thanks Steve… worked out the issue. Couldn’t order via mobile, only worked via PC. Weird!
