        Freedom of speech.

its basicallyfree accom. paying mandatory tips means youre paying for the in country travel. expect to pay at least an extra 1k aud on hidden fees

      • +2

I haven't seen anywhere that China operates on a tipping system, looking it up it seems it's the opposite.

        • -2

          Ok

@belongsinforums: Instead of a passive aggressive reply you could have posted a more insightful comment to help other readers who are also curious, but sure.

I just got the full itinerary from when this was last posted for my trip late May 2024.

While China might not have mandatory tipping, it is basically mandatory tipping for those on the tour if you want to have a somewhat okay time.

The Tour guide is a $12aud "tip" daily, and is heavily implied to be non negotiable. If you do not want to have this be a problem (and they will make it a problem based off of previous comments in the other post) - just pay. I can't see anything else in the itinerary that mentions tipping on other situations, but it's implied there will be the odd occasion.

6 out of the 10 days have a ~$80aud fee for a random tour - I imagine these are the main things you'd want to go on anyway to complete the tour. Else you're just kinda… there.

It is a visa requirement not to leave the guidance of your tour. else your visa is void. If you start not having a good time and think you can just bail - think again. From other posts, the tour guides take your passport and hold onto it for you anyway.

The last post was downvoted into oblivion for a number of reasons, but some voices in the comments seemed to say they had a good time, provided you just paid and played along. The itinerary says $100aud a day is about what you should expect to pay, so that lines up with the "1k aud on hidden fees" that @belongsinforums mentioned, and is therefore accurate.

You have to go to the local souvenir shops otherwise you get left behind or screamed at by the guide.

      KIDS!

      • Flight Centre China Express Tour for $A990 per person.

        This tour states: "Child

This tour is best enjoyed to adult travellers and is not suitable for children under 12 years of age. Children 12 years and above are subject to the adult price and must be accompanied by an adult."

So if the kid is over 12, the Flight Centre Tour is an option.

  • TAD has so many interesting Tours, we are spoilt for choice!
I'm on the verge to bite the bullet and pick just one of them, anyone!

Thanks China for paid my Centrelink and Medicare.

  • China Southern is a budget carrier? i.e no meals or drinks included on flight, carry on only?

    • +1

its mid range. not like jetstar.

    • +1

It's a full service airline. Regional carrier.

    • +1

It’s full service, includes meals, seats and checked bags.

The quality of the service is another matter …

    • +1

I once flew with China Southern on my way to EU. I was pleasently surprised that it (at the time) was way above Qantas service quality. Would use them again.

Wow so cheap. Subsidised by the CCP? I’m in!!

    • +10

Amazing how paranoid some people are.

      • -2

        I wasn’t being sarcastic

        • Doesn't make it better at all

@dosada: Asking if the deal is subsidised by the government? I was legitimately wondering

            • @Agileduck: its not .
In china lots of cheap tours, basically they only ask for fees for transportion. You get free accommodation, profit comes from commissions of going to numerous shops.

            • +1

@Agileduck: Mate, at this price, it is probably subsidised by the chinese government. But, a deal is still a deal, as for whether or not you believe in their idealogy is another matter.

FYI, when I was in Uni, I did a study exchange to China and was given 7k AUD by the china government as "subsidy". This doesn't change my view that Taiwan is and always will be a independent country from China.

  • Great deal. can we make alternate arrangement on this ?

e.g. visit or stay in hk prior or after the itinerary

  • Great deal. But can I change 2 lunches to 1 lunch and 1 dinner?

  • +1

china is doable without chinese knowledge. stick to tourist hotspots, order taxis from hotels and youll be fine. great wall is worth seeing at least once. forbiddencity can be skipped

    • 你说英文吗?

    • +1

Taxis from hotel? You just order DiDi via the Alipay app nowadays

      • For people who don't have local number and apps

        • Just set up wechat before you go with your number verified. The wechat app links to Didi.

I love to go there but I'm not brave enough.

    • I went on a similar trip with my partner. We were hesitant to even go at first, but had a family member who had been on the same tour a few years back and loved it, so we thought we'd go for it as the price was too good.

It was our first trip overseas, and we loved it. It was a real eye-opening experience.

Be aware that you'll be taken to many shops to buy things and generally can't skip them.

Read comments in the other china tour post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/841656

    • Shopping is the main focus of the tour, and it is priced accordingly. ;)

  • I did one of these tour pre pandemic its was really good. Well organised and gives a glimpse into everyday China life. Not obligated or pressured to buy anything at the various shops. Food practices at some restaurants were questionably at best, in the western hotels they were fine.

  • +1

$990 with flight + accommodation + meals for 10 days???

I see these deals often, but always doubt if there are any hidden fees once you board that plane.

IF I was NOT to spend a dollar at all the souvenir shops they take us, will I be left behind ?

Also, being an australian/taiwan dual citizen, what chances that I might miraculously disappear while in China ?

Deal is so good, but also so sussy at the same time.

    • +4

      From my experience on the TripADeal $999 trip last month;
I did not see any extra fees on the flights (which were China Eastern). Beverages were FOC (even beer) and I was even offered an extra meal on the return flight. Same for hotels and when we were on the optional tours. No attempts that I saw to up-sell.
Re the shopping trips; in our group (32 pax) there was always someone who bought something but there were quite a few people who bought nothing in any of them, and I did not see or hear of anyone being pressured to buy anything.
I have no insights into the dual citizenship situation, can't offer any advice.
