Gee these physical barrier mowers must a tough sell right ? Aren't they all virtual mapping now like robo vacs?

    • Not at all. Most (almost all?) use boundary wires. It's a lot harder to have a lidar setup when everything isn't perfectly flat and they're expressed to the elements.

      • They're RTK GPS now.

    • You generally have a choice of a boundary wire, or a RTK-GPS one which usually does the virtual mapping - boundary wire are significantly cheaper around the $1000-$1500 mark, GPS based generally start around $2500+. Cheapest GPS based one I've seen was a short while back the ecovacs goat was available with a $1k discount which bought it to $2k. Once the GPS ones become more popular the price will hopefully drop a bit.

  • I know it will probably get stuck on a twig, but still scared it is going to go on a killing spree or have some weird accident.

I'm more worried someone walks/drives by and takes it home with them

And then we get a race of lawnmower-human hybrids.

        • And then we get a race of lawnmower-human hybrids.

All's fair when they asked for it by kidnapping the mower.. I welcome our new lawnmower-overlords

The worx ones do have an alarm accessory that I assume goes off if someone picks it up without entering the pin. What I generally do with mine (gardena, not worx) is set it to cut the front lawn late at night when less people are coming past. It's so quiet that I can only hear it when it goes past my front door when open, so it's not going to disturb neighbours. There's also a huge amount of empty space inside the waterproof section of the robot that you could likely add your own GPS tracker if you wanted to.

  • Will it detect dog poo and avoid it?

    • Or hoses?

    • I saw it on someone's lawn and it was unable to detect my poo

You pooed on someone’s lawn to test? 😱😱

      • You're not this guy by any chance?

        • Lol… actually funny 😂

    • no :(

    • No, you'd need a much more expensive one with AI cameras for that (the worx landroid vision system isn't camera based, so that won't detect them either). Check out how to clean the robot though - the Gardena ones say you can hose them down with a normal garden hose just fine, where others say you must use a brush and avoid direct hosing.

These look like they are hackable with the Open Mower project.

    • Geez… a world of Mad Max Mowers

    • Open mower looks like it's only really compatible with the yardforce mowers, and you'd really be after a much cheaper mower if you're going to hack it to openmower. There are other similar projects like Ardumower which seems more of a build from scratch system, but you could probably buy an off the shelf mower then do away with most of it's controllers to go to ardumower if you have no way/no desire to build the frame and mount motors etc yourself - but again you'd likely want to start with a cheaper mower.

    • Source? I dont see it listed on the spreadsheet
