Today Was Lottery Day for Sydney Olympic Park Rangers

Went to Bicentennial Park today and it appeared who Sydney was there (must be close to 5000 people). Standard P3 parking must have been filled very early in the morning.

Pretty much everyone started to park on the grass (either No parking or No stopping zone).

Rangers arrived probably 12:30pm and literally every car in these spots got fined. Must be at least 200 to 300 cars that I passed.

Ironically the ranger parked in No stopping area as well.

Is it fair to these people to get fined when there are just limited parking spots and 30 times more people arrived in the park?

                  @kiitos: depends on which part of the park you need to get to. concord west gives you the closest and most direct entry to bicentennial park from station side. north strathfield is another lesser known route but a bit longer of a walk over the bridge

      not if you live in Woop Woop, many people migrants especially have no idea what is living regional areas coming to city for events. IN other countries where migrants come from every corner of most forsaken city is serviced by public transport to every corner of the country. Not everyone in the world revolves around metropolitan Singapore, understand this concept. Unless you have forgotten .

    Those park ranger cars drive everywhere in Sydney olympic park, footpaths included. Doubt stopping on what looks like a driveway into the one of their parks will be against their policy.

    Do you have an alternative solution you are proposing. Obviously we can't just say have at it , park where and when ever you want. We know those verges would very quickly become unsafe for pedestrians with tire ruts etc. And the place would quickly become an eyesore.

        Great idea. Pave over the park and turn it in to a car park. Then there won't be a reason for people to go there so the carpark won't be needed. Hey, wait a minute…..

          I love this post so much.

          It's basically what people complain about but don't realize that car parks are themselves such an eyesore and take up way too much room yet are empty most of the time.

          If anything we'd be better off with less parking to try and force people to use their cars less.

    Olympic Park rangers are fairly ruthless, not much leeway given, eg. drop-off/pick-up kids from sports activities, where do you do that? there are very few/no drop-off zones outside the venues. Lots of closed bus lanes and bus parking, but dont wait there.

    re, PT/ I've always thought a second station on the train loop would add value, while not adding capacity on the line, it would be more flexible, making it a more serviceable route/alternate to driving. A station on the above ground section along Sarah Durak Ave between Australia Ave and Edwin Flack either side of Olympic Blvd down past the Aquatic Centre could work, without costing too many billions.

      Why should those Park Rangers not make every effort to hit their quota. If your job required you to hit a target , I am pretty sure you would be doing the same.

      I understand the general perception of Parking Rangers but I can hardly call them ruthless for doing diligently carrying out a job they are being paid to do.

      There are plenty of politicians who get paid a lot and yet sit around and do nothing.

    There is MORE than one car park at Olympic Park! Also, if you follow Sydney Olympic Park on their socials, they give updates on parking and when they sell out.

    Parks aren't meant to be car parks or surrounded by car parks, they're meant to be green spaces for use by locals within walking distance. Now centennial park may have a few other purposes so it has some parking. But that's not what OP described with people needing cars to transport for sporting equip etc. Those people should be at their local parks. If there's not enough, then move somewhere better suited to needs.

    Agreed. It's totally unfair.

    There should be the exact number of parking spots for the number of people coming, to the person. Otherwise it's basically entrapment.

    I might have to go to an event in my car while my wife 4 driving children drive in individually as well, in case we have things to do later.

    I haven't looked but I'm sure the MCG has 100,024 parking spots so something like this would never happen.

    They gambled and now need to pay the price. Even if they couldn't or didn't want to take public transport, they could have parked elsewhere and taken an Uber to the park and it still would have been significantly less than their fine. Feel free to advocate for more parking spaces but there's nothing unfair about this.

    From your photos it looks like the Newington Armoury/Blaxland Park, not Bicentennial Park. The whole area is surrounded by walking tracks and cycle paths that connect to Parramatta, Bicentennial Park and beyond. They should remove half the parking and just keep the rest as disabled parking. Your photos really piss me off tbh.

      Disabled? You obviously haven't met the plethora of able bodied people who park in disabled parking or in the yellow crossed area next to disabled parking at my gym

        So many people seem to genuinely think if they have a disabled permit it entitles the car to park without the disabled person present.
        Pram parking though, I don't get. Sure allocate some wide spaces but nothing about a pram hinders walking or mobility so no need to be close to door. They should be in the safest most sheltered part of the carpark .

          If we accept that carparks have the potential to be dangerous (drivers reversing out of bays without checking, or driving through pedestrian crossings without stopping), then it could be argued that it makes sense to minimise the distance someone with a pram needs to walk through them.

            @kiitos: Yes agreed, though most car parks I see have a quieter, sheltered area near the footpath away from door. But the pram parking is right in the busiest section at front door, maybe close to footpath but many pedestrians, trolleys, and traffic. Probably worst place to be negotiating a toddler or 2 and wrestling a pram out of boot.

    I help run once-off oval parking (as an SES volunteer) at my local dawn service.

    Perhaps the organiser of your dawn service could do something like that if there's space to do so.
