I want this despite living in a small inner city apartment with no fire place

    • In a townhouse, not much better. Bought the splitter axe version of this happy days camping.

Just don't go visiting a mall with it

Do you happen to like Huey Lewis: Hip to be Square? ;-)

  • Get the Fiskars X27. It's the F1 of splitting axes. After using heavy splitters, I gave the X27 a try and haven't used my others splitters since.

    • I would recommend the maul over the axe for splitting logs. Axe is prone to getting stuck and doesn't force the pieces apart enough to split fibrous wood like red gum. The maul hits like a grenade. I have both btw, the axe is great for chopping but not log splitting.

  • I'm about to move to a property that has a fireplace. I'm a log-splitting virgin. I have a basic/cheap axe from Bunnings, but I don't think it will do the job. What should I be buying to split tons of firewood?

    • This Fiskars will do the job. I have one and it's great.

axe's are harder work splitting wood.
Block splitters have wider heads, usually with more weight, so less effort.

make sure you split along the grain.

For any gardening stuff you can't go wring with Fiskars. I don't own their block splitter, but if I needed a new one, it'd be my first choice, as their stuff is always good.

      That one.

I was skeptical and used mauls for years, got one of those Fiskars a decade ago and was amazed at how much better they are. I am a bugger guy 186cm/110kg and can use a maul for hours but this is easily weilded and not as tiring

Good luck with the splitting. Split greenwood, let it dry for 2 years (or more) then burn. It's the sap in the wood thats the problem not water per se. I was off grid but if you are on grid, get a heat pump and solar panels and use the fire for ambience on occasions.

  • Interesting name for an axe: maul pro.

    • maul here means big hammer/axe, not a verb

  • Assuming this is the same product, Bunnings might price match / beat? https://www.bunnings.com.au/fiskars-3-6kg-isocore-maul_p3361…

Pretty sure it's the same product although missing word "pro".

    • Yeah, but bunnings would prob want the same sku/model number.
Could always try. But it is generally the get out of pricematching card to play.

  • Bunnings: "The product has been designed so that the head won’t separate from the body, because safety is crucial"
I found this so reassuring I bought one from Amazon.
    "Splits hard wood like butter,"
I might store it next to my kayak which glides effortlessly through water.
"Mine has now snapped the head off" :(
