@unity1: No 4g not eligible. 4g only worth their actual trade in value.

Yes, they do check the phone turns on.

            • @unity1: Do they actually bother to check if the old phone supports 4g? I have an old Nexus from 2011 that still powers on and I had to Google if it actually supports 4G. Apparently it does :(

              • +1

@0FoxGiven: No sure, but my phone was quite obviously a very old 3g phone. Try and see if you can slip it in under their noises.

            • +2

@unity1: I was hoping someone wouldn't say that. One of the many unused phones I have has a dead battery. I've also got a drawer full of 2G phones and 3G phones that no longer work on the 3G bands currently in use. I'm digging through to find one that turns on. I knew my hoarding would eventually work out. A simple feature phone is sufficient for my needs.

I might have to trade the phone I actually use which is an Alcatel Onetouch Pixi.

              • +3

@mysterytal: Take both in. Try to trade in the 2g phone first. If they don't accept just give the 3g phone. I got a couple more phones. Hoping JB or GG will do something similar.

Does iPhone 5 count as 3G? Or is it only iPhone 3 and 4

  • +6

Just got off the call - they'll need to see it power on, even if it has a proprietary charging cable (Staff said they should have one, somehow). Also no definitive answer on an iPhone, will report back when I pop in today.

    • +1

Thanks let us know. iPhone 4 here still charges I just need to make sure its on full charge. Battery is on its last legs.

    • Got back (from a long day) and I got the phone!

When I called, one staff member said he'd have a plug to test if the old phone turns on. When I arrived however, they didn't have such a thing and after some internal squabbling, they agreed to swap the phones despite not being able to turn it on.

I was about to try again but with an iPhone, but the staff did imply it was like for like (3g phone for 4g phone, where the iPhone 6 is not).

      • +2

Never checked if my old phone worked or was 3G. Just handed over the phone when arrived. Even supplied a free HN carry bag.
Gave name & number when rang to put aside for me.

        • Nicely done, I really gotta try my luck with that iPhone.

          • @silverrat23: Its definitely luck - up to individual staff. Hayden was so helpful 👍

  • +4

I confirmed this with HN. Yes, this promo is valid. However, online support is not aware of it, each store most likely is not aware either. So you will need to to actually show them a screenshot or email and give them time to confirm this internally. Better to give a call to your local store to save yourself time.

Any phone fits. Doesn't need to be working or having proof of purchase or anything else.

    • +4

So you will need to to actually show them a screenshot

Without looking at the screenshot and even though I showed it to them, one of the staff at HN Belconnen immediately claims it was a hoax. It took about 15 minutes for me to dig up more information and he changed his claim to "we don't have any phones available".

      • +3

I bet they all franchise plus really depending on who the d|ck you are dealing with

  • +5

Just walked into HN with a old Nokia phone. After about 30 Min walked out with this Nokia. Can't complain.

    • +2

The whole process was about five minutes from me. It doesn’t take all that long.

      • +1

Do you need to give them any personal details or fill in any forms or show ID?

        • Drivers license and phone number

  • How does this work?

I have an Xperia XA, factory reset but can't use without spending 8 hours (profanity) around and hacking via some accessibility / browser exploit as I lost the burner gmail accout.

Can I just rock up to HN with it, show them it powers on, and they'll give me a Nokia?

  • +2

Do they accept phones with cracked screens?

    • Yes, any condition.

  • do we need to give them the original box, charger & cable too?

    • +1

      And $500 for extended warranty😄
Of course not. Most would have thrown out the box ages ago & likely replaced charger & cable

  • +3

Lol at all the reports when it was posted by a mod.

  • +5

Went to Fyshwick. I seemed to be the first in for the day but they only have 2 Nokias left after me. As at 12pm.

    • Thanks. Took a punt and a 15 minute drive and got one of the remaining two.

    • +1

Just got the last one apparently. Tlasked if they were getting more and they said thats it

  • I have working Samsung 3g tablet. wondering if they would consider it.

  • +2

I have swapped my very old phone with the Nokia 110.

  • +5

The deal is legit. Just walked in the store, gave my mobile number, name and old moto phone and that's it!

    • +1

Did they check if your old phone turned on?

      • +4

No. Though, they made me sign something which I didn't read.

        • +3

          Humancentipad agreement

      • Yes they checked mine.

        • Someone care to tell me please what did I just signed?
I forgot to read in excitement.

          • @Freeza: I didn’t need to sign anything.

  • +4

just went to HN, got a new Nokia in 5 minutes

  • -2

Where is the actual link , i cannot see anywhere official. Does anyone actual exchanged?

  • +4

Just went to HN Nunawading. They are aware of the promotion and exchanged it within 5 mins. Only needed name, email and phone number. They said 5th one since this morning. Just needed to turn on.

  • I have some old phones, no idea if they are 3G only. Looking up on GSM Arena, they are typically listed as GSM, HSPA, HSDPA, or LTE. Turning on some of the phones they show GSM or WCDMA.

Does it has to be a 3G only old phone? how do they know? Or do they check against a long list of 3G phones?

    • +3

just bring the phone to shop and if they ask if it's 3G just say yes.

    • +1

      Google model number + 4G

  • +2

HV Penrith 11:19am I was the 1st one.
They know this deal, but no one knows how to do it.
So there were 3 staff come together to sort out how to do it.
5-10 minutes, they sorted it out and took my old Nokia 6210 3G phone.
My phone number needed to match my account already with them.
And they also asked if the old phone works, but seems not very important
There's also a staff came with me to the cashier and told the cashier how to do this transaction

  • +2

got last one from my local store

Old HTC phone that was not turning on
They didn't check phone, just name addy provided.

Was offered a $255 Gold Platinum Sapphire coated HDMI cable which I refused kindly

    • Which store did you go to?

  • The phone is unavailable at my nearest store. Has anyone tried to purchase it from a store that was also out of stock, and if so, what was the outcome?

    • Which HN store did you visit?

      • +2

        Taylors Lakes, VIc

  • +1

Took about 10 minutes of waiting for staff to sort it out as they weren't aware of this deal but got the free phone in the end

    • +2

Also the phones traded in had cracked screens they didn't check that they turned on.

  • +2

Took much longer, as I had to apply for trade-in on site but managed to get the phone without any issues.

    • +1

      Same

  • Need to include charger? If not do they have the cable for the old 3g phone?

    • not necessary so if you can't find the charger it's still ok.

    • +2

No, but you do need to show it powers on. So you need to charge it first.

      • +1

        Mine was dead
They didnt turn it on. I just said battery was flat

  • i have a 3g tablet. i wonder if they will accept it?

  • Thanks OP! Just handed over my old phone. They didn't even check if it powered on. I should have given a bogus name and number cuz they didn't validate it with my ID. Might try swapping out an old phone if the deal is still up next week.

  • +1

Just back from Harvey Norman Marion SA. In and out in 5 minutes. Salesman didn't check the phone I traded in and only asked for name and phone number.

  • +1

    No stock at Carindale QLD.

  • +1

If you wanna try to bring this Nokia to cashies think about cost of your petrol first, as they don't give more than $10 for it brand new.

  • +1

Got one from Nunawading. Hardly any left.

Brought 3 old phones to swap but they said limited to one per customer.

Was in and out within a few minutes.

They only checked that the phone powered on and nothing else.

  • +1

Got the last one from hoppers crossing. It took only about 5 mins.

  • +4

Thanks op, traded in a phone I got on AliExpress in about 2012 which never really worked properly. The coating had started to deteriorate and it was all sticky and gross.

Battery was completely dead but after putting it in the freezer for half an hour that trick seemed to work and it started charging enough to start it.

  • +2

HN Caringbah - the manager didn't know anything about it and claims it is a scam

  • +3

First HN had been Ozbargained this morning. They checked - stock at next store. But ring first!

Rang store, explained relative was too sick to get to store. Took my name & number. 2 put aside. Just need to give different number for other phone.

Picked up 2 at once. Very quick😊
Seemed happy to get rid of stock!!

Swapped 2 free locked Vodafone mobiles from Woolies Deal years ago.

  • +5

Awesome! Went into HN Perth at 10 mins after opening, store was empty, the staff had heard of this but had to check how it worked.

Dual SIM, headphone jack, VoLTE (of course!), unlocked, Sybian S30
FM radio, MP3 player, bluetooth, Snake!!, , 120Hz display processor.

Came with 8GB SD card included - I double checked it was not 8MB.

    • Forgot to mention it has 32GB storage

      • +1

No, that is just the max SD allowed.
        Built in storage is tiny.

        • +2

Most likely thats not true. I used 64Gb microsd in a Nokia made around 2009. I am nearly confident that this 4G will work with at least 512Gb microsd.

    • +2

My 2005 3MP digital camera came with 32MB SD! Useless, even in a basic camera. Bought 1GB SD for $99😱
      Now 8GB with 'free' mobile😲

      • Give em another 20 years and swap this phone for another one with a 1Tb microsd :)

        • You don't think the microsd might be obsolete by then?

          • +1

@INFIDEL: If it hasn't in 25 years (including nonmicro SD), yes. They will develop new type-XC thingies, but keep them backward compatible.

          • +1

@INFIDEL: Some people still use Compact Flash!

  • +5

Called HN Fyshwick and was told that they ran out and they have no intention to get more in. However, I was told to try my luck with Belconnen.

Went to Belconnen and two of the staff minding the mobile phone counter claims to have never seen nor heard of said promo before. Went to a 3rd staff and, without taking a close look of the promo, immediately claims to be a "scam". 15 minutes later the same staff member changed his story and claims that he does not have any phones available.

    • +2

Both stores I went to in Brisbane, staff were VERY aware of offer.

First store this afternoon said "Ozbargain? They cleaned us out this morning! We have no intention to restock."

Rang next store showing stock on their system. Put 2 aside for me, took my detail, so was immediately ready to pick up. They were aware due to our demand.

      • Which 2 stores in Brisbane were they?

        • Carindale had none, think Mt Gravatt had none after me @14:30.

          • @INFIDEL: Right.. Thanks, mate!

            • @ako: Ring stores & ask to hold for you
But likely few left. May restock.

For me, after over a decade of using Android on larger touch screens - Nokia system is too frustrating & clunky to go back to😜

Giving my Nokias to older people I know who will appreciate them🎁

  • Finally decided which phone to trade in. A Nokia 3310 HMD from a previous deal lol.

    • +3

      Don't, it's the better phone.

      • +1

But given it doesn't support 4G… surely it's the more useless phone and has no real nostalgia value for me since I never ended up using it beyond initial set up.

I'm also planning to trade in an old Asus Zenfone Max phone from 2015…

Other than this will probably hold onto my nostalgic (real) Nokia phones and my Blackberry Bold!

        • Sorry, I forgot the early ones were 3g only (if they had a 4g one that supported all the old java games I'd lap it up).

Also holding onto my beloved crackberry, gonna need to give a much better phone than this for me to part with them!

  • +1

Already hating this old style keyboard mobile with keyboard navigation of tiny screen.😜

Now it's locked itself. Can't be bothered finding out how to unlock, except removing the battery🔓

    • +1

      In the drawer it goes.

      • +1

Drawer is full of mainly old, free but locked & useless mobiles.
Says not to throw in bin…
Guess ebay or marketplace will have a lot of these very soon!

        • Will likely pass on to older phone users with 3G key based phones.
Meet a few on the bus.

    • To Unlock: Press
Middle button, then immediately top left button

Not at all intuitive. Need to learn how to use it!
Brings back bad memories of Nokias from my past, starting with the early 90's 101 model😜

  • Haven't got a new nokia in a year or two, forgot they all come with 8gb cards in them, as did this one when I picked it up

Dumped an old 2g slider phone, guy ran the IMEI but otherwise was a breeze, no ID or anything needed as some have said, so may be store by store hey.

Cheers OP, the one year old is loving hitting the buttons

    • Staff member looked at old locked Vodafone & thought better of checking further. Handed over the replacement. Just asked for name & number - when I rang to put aside.

one year old is loving hitting the buttons

Think only the very young or old will like this keyboard mobile.
