King Living Sofa - Extra Discounts?

Hi OzB fam, wife and I are pretty set on the Jasper (like most people) from King Living, but was just wondering if anyone has actual experience in successfully negotiating extra discounts particularly on top of their seemingly regular "50% off" sales?

Obviously not here to scrape every cent I can get (although this is the OzB way), but if we know for a fact that extra discounts can be had then that's a no brainer to go for, rather than paying the sticker price.

I've got a second hand King sofa, I think it's the old Jasper. It looks nice and all but TBH it's kinda uncomfortable, the way the cushions are it sort of forces you to curve your lower back, so you end up messing your back if you sit in it too long. You end up sitting in a C shape instead of a leaning Lshape if you get me.

    • When I was couch shopping I was interested in King sofas too for the storage but found them to be super uncomfortable too and a bit awkward. Ended up getting one from Castlery.

      • Hmm that's interesting. We visited a King showroom over the weekend and tested the Jasper (again) which we didn't think was uncomfortable. But to your point maybe it's different if you're sitting in it for a long time.

To be honest we were drawn to the aesthetics more than anything since it really suited what we want for our living room. I wouldn't mind giving Castlery another look though.

        • My partner and I only sat on the King sofas for a short time and didn't like it. Might be worth trying for longer.

Castlery only have a Sydney showroom and a small range (like 2-3 sofas) but you can get free fabric swatches from them. https://www.castlery.com/au/swatches Some of the newer Castlery sofas are very nice if you are after mid-century.

        • I'm not talking crazy long, 2 hours a night. I have a bulging disc and so I'm pretty good elsewhere in life (have a herman miller office chair, get up often, etc) but I still have the odd flare up and I swear it's sitting in this sofa that's the culprit. Mine came with a little hot dog shaped cushion which helps a little but I usually forget to use it.

        • I have the Neo which is pretty comfortable and has lasted really well. I guess its only around 8 years old but is still in great condition - we have had it cleaned once, but kids and pets and eating in front of the TV now and then will do that

We’ve had a Jasper for 12 plus years and agree with this sentiment. Our next sofa will have a tall back. It won’t look as nice but will be way more comfortable for long movie sessions.

Not so random question, how tall are you? some sofas aren't designed for short people, and some do or you get a bad back or uncomfortable when sitting for a long time.

    • It looks nice and all but TBH it's kinda uncomfortable

This is a problem with down cushions. They are sold as premium but they don't hold their shape so are a terrible long term option. A friend has another King model with down cushions and it's so bad that they are getting rid of it. I've had my cheapo couch for about 10 years with good old fashioned high density foam and it's still as comfy as the day I got it.

      • I have a jasper, now probably 15 years old, bought it just before I realized the horrors of "down production" and wasn't something I thought about. Apart from that it did start losing shape and got physically uncomfortable too. I replaced the down infills with foam from cheap mattresses and it has been holding its shape well for years of constant use and is very comfortable.

They never do additional discounts over and above their permanent "sale" prices (that I know of).

The only decent further discount they had was a free leather upgrade a few years ago. I only know because I pounced on it.

    • Yes, the early covid panic got us some amazing deals too :D

Recently got another room furnished and got another 3 sets and the information that I got was that we were nowhere closed to the $ values where they'd negotiate

    • Ah ok thanks, that's good to know! At least now we know we don't have to waste time haggling.

Deal with a cooked back because it looks good…righto.

  • Not sure if they still do it but we got one of our King couches at 70% off because they were selling the floor stock. It might be worth asking if they still do it. I don’t have a Jasper but the three King Couches we have are very comfortable. They are all high back ones.

A few times a year they sell display or damaged items for a very good discount, but usually these are offered to employees only. The big warehouse stock sales with similar discounts that is available to the public are rare, maybe once every 2-3 years.

One thing to know is that due to their pricing model, unless you have a friend or family there, you won't get more discounts by playing one store against another, you'll be wasting your time.

      • I bought mine a few years ago. They advertised they would be selling the floor stock at 70% off so I scoped out the stores to find the leather couch I wanted and got to the store before opening and then waited for it to open. They threw in the leather cushions that were on it for free.

If you're in Melbourne like your profile suggests and want to risk travelling to Sunshine, there is an outlet there.

    • Not sure if risking my life is worth shaving a few extra bucks off a couch!

      (jk…?)

That thing looks super uncomfortable! Those sort of deep couches are so stupid. They always force you to slouch, so your lower back ends up hurting in small amount of time you test sit at the shop lol

    • The Mrs didn't find it too bad when we tested, and she isn't the tallest. There was another model that we tested at the showroom that was considerably deeper than the Jasper, and that was way too deep for our liking.

  • Their "sale" price is RRP, most of the furniture stores just cycle through sales, NY sale, AU day sale, easter sale, EOFY sale etc. Im pretty sure its because they dont want to negotiate

Go to any of the lounge/furniture stores and talk to someone in sales, then go to a used/new car dealer and its a copy/paste

My parents have a delta which uses the same cushion that raises in the middle, not comfortable to sit or lay on, ours I fall asleep on the lounge at least 5 nights a week

  • Hi we bought 2.5 Seater & a 2 seater cloud couche in leather. They look great but are the hardest seats we have ever had We’ve been using for just on 3 years & hasn’t softened up at all, so we don’t use much. Funny the ones in numerous king living showrooms are so comfortable But definitely not our two couches. Wouldn’t buy againn

    • That's disappointing to hear 😕. Have you found something that could be a potential replacement for your couches?
