What to do differently…. please explain

Edit: I haven't had a fine in 8 years btw…

    Get in lane earlier

    /thread

    • +10
      • Yeah okay, ill take that one on the chin, touche - But you can actually travel in a bike lane for > 50 meters.

        Bicycle lane rules for drivers
If you’re driving a car, you’re not allowed to drive in a bike lane unless:
you’re driving for 50 metres or less to:
        enter or leave the road
        to turn at an intersection

        • +10

Learn the difference between > and <
          Just a minor thing ;-)

      • +7

Be patient, drive with the traffic regardless of how slow and learn from your mistakes!

  • +16

you should have followed the cabbie. they know where all the speed cameras are

  • +69

Don't speed? It's not rocket science.

Have some patience and stay in the left lane. You know you have to turn but you'd rather save two seconds gassing it around some slow pokes. Obviously the risk ie the fine is not worth the pittance of a reward of saving virtually nothing in the scheme of your entire journey.

      • +15

No you dont. You don't lose 3 minutes at every light because you miss one.

        • +2

Theres a right turn near me that only comes on every 2nd cycle so its pretty close to 3 minutes.

          • +4

@Pinchy: Thats one set of lights, not a whole run of them.

        • +4

Actually, I have noticed this on certain roads. You get one set of red lights and you basically wind up getting every single red light that follows. Catch a green and somehow you're good all the way through.

This is Gold Coast, Qld by the way.

          • +3

@shreav: There sets of lights that are sequenced to give you a 'run of green'. But if one direction is getting a good green run, the the opposite direction cannot get a good run. Its not possible to sequence two directions of travel to run freely.

its probably some sort of cognitive bias that makes you think if you miss the green you get all the reds. Its more likely that you just notice both extremes. That is, you notice when you get a brilliant run and you notice when you get a lot of reds. Mostly you notice reds when you're in a hurry and you likely dont really remember the smooth runs that dont give you any cause to get stressed.

            • @Euphemistic: I think you're right. I'm going to try and note this next time I'm driving around those roads and see how common it really is.

              • +1

@shreav: BTW inwasnt saying that a run of green lights isnt faster, not stopping is clearly more efficient. I was originally objecting to Raulio suggesting that speeding through 1 set of lights would save 3 mins each at the rest of the lights. 5 sets of lights would be 18 minutes but id guess that the trip time would only be a couple of minutes different with 'all the red lights'

      • +17

Factor that scenario into the time you leave and if it goes better, bonus!

      • +16

        Leave earlier?

          • +24

@Raulioli8810: I dont know if its funny or sad but most times people speeding or heavy braking or excellerating dont actually gain much time in heavy traffic. Most times i catch up to them somewhere down the road. You might think your gaining time but in reality by the end of the trip your gained maybe a minute or 2 and thats all.

            • +4

@2esc: Plus cost for fuel and tyres for lack of speed smoothing and heavy braking

            • -1

@2esc: 2 minutes every day for an entire driving lifetime is close to a month of time you're spending it in the car where your life is at risk. If you want to waste your time and risk the safety of you and your family unnecessarily prolonging your time on the road - be my guest. Just don't suggest other people should also do the same thing.

          • +3

@Raulioli8810: You could move closer to work.

            • +2

@Euphemistic: could afford to live closer to work without all the speeding fines.

          • +4

@Raulioli8810: your choice, sacrifice a few minutes or a few thousand dollars and your license.

      • +1

sitting behind someone who isn't going the speed limit

Why do you believe the word 'limit' means mandatory minimum?
It is literally a maximum allowable speed, no matter how much you would like your interpretation to be true.
Maximum speed means that any speed (with the exception listed in the Act of course) is absolutely okay for anyone driving on that road.
They do not need to drive at the speed limit just because you want it to be so.
You need to learn to plan your travel time better and drive to the conditions ie some other drivers not doing what you want.

        • +5

While true, you can be fined for driving too low below the limit. There is a reasonable expectation to drive close to the limit, provided conditions are safe to do so.

We've all been stuck behind someone going 20kmh below the limit before and it doesn't feel great.

          • +1

            @Charmoffensive:

you can be fined for driving too low below the limit

            That's what i meant by…

(with the exception listed in the Act of course)

Not disagreeing with you ……was hoping people may actually go and read the rules rather than wait to be spoon fed the info here.

  • pretty sure at 20 seconds in a car going in the other direction flash his lights…..

    • +4

Nah, just a car with its lights on and showing through gaps in the fencing.

    • -2

      Nah, no-one does that anymore.
I do it all the time and no-one acknowledges, I don't think anyone cares anymore?

      • +2

        I appreciate you

      • +1

Because if someone was driving in a way that was going to get them a fine, just let them do their thing. It's not like you flashing your lights is going to improve their driving, whereas a fine might (for a while at least).

        • Also flashing your lights risks you getting a fine yourself.

      • A friend of mine used to do this but since becoming a parent understood the importance of not flashing.

  • +30

    Use Waze

    • -2

Bump, you just need to know when to slow down. Or so a freind told me….

  • +21

I know I got to turn left

    Then move on

Traffic take off at a snail rate

    Welcome to traffic

Guy sitting in my blind spot with a row of cars behind him since the lights

    Welcome to traffic

As I lane change get nabbed…

Well you missed the bit that you speed up to change lanes.

What to do differently…. please explain

    Don't speed, move over earlier.

  • +3

Get in left lane before lights.

Dont speed after changing because slow traffic gave you the pip.

    Win.

  • +10

    Buy a Camry.

  • +6

    what
why did you speed up when changing lanes.

    there was literally no need

    • +2

This exactly. I couldn't comprehend that at all. It scares me that ppl act like that and then ask a question as to what they're doing wrong.

EDIT: nm, the car and row behind in blind spot we couldn't see. Still though, if they're that close, you wait for an opening

  • +3

Logical question - do you actually have a drivers license and know the road rules?

    • -8

I do actually! Theres this one which I was abiding by: 148 - Giving way when moving from one lane or line of traffic to another marked lane or line of traffic

      • +5

Giving way means letting another road user have the space they need, not speeding up to get out of their way.

  • +7

It's better to slow down a bit and block traffic than to speed. And better still to avoid needing to slow down by changing lanes sooner. Your lane change seemed really quick too, like jerked the wheel, over in a second. You'd lose points for that on a driver's test, probably.

    • -5

Yes it was a shitty lane change. But as I said guy in blind spot and guys behind him…… I was nicely boxed in….

      • +10

As theres no audio, how long did you sit there with your blinker on indicating to others you wanted to change lanes? Can't have been long based on that video before you accelerated to get into the lane.

Reduce speed, await gap in traffic, if no gap appears, potentially 'suck it up' and go straight to next round about/turn whatever and come back and realise you should have got in the left lane earlier and learn for next time.

        • I had to cut it due to copy right infringement. You'll have a laugh a few weeks earlier same road, very similar situation and had to come to a compete stop in the right hand land cuz someone wanted to change lanes…. and indicator was on from when I saw the cabbie taking the left. Guy sped up…. let me upload

          • +1

@Mintee: So you know they put a camera there and still sped there… With the car speeding up they could have just maintained their speed and moved over. It does seem like the best course of action would be to move over earlier. You know you need to change lanes. You know you're going to have problems changing lanes. That's probably why all of those vehicles are in the left lane.

If it's a new situation and you find yourself in the wrong lane with no good way to get across, it's safer/cheaper to just keep going and figure it out after. Some pretty nasty accidents can happen when you start panicking about not making your turn and do silly things. Just stay calm, indicate and often someone will let you in, if not things will work out in the end anyway. Leave earlier if you need to.

        • I got copy righted again but maybe @Austraia is suggesting I do this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxGpZGyOHQQ

Same road :) - Should get a fine for a complete stop? camera was there too!

          • @Mintee: If there was a cop around that guy would have absolutely been pulled over. Though this person being sh*t at driving doesn't excuse you for also being sh*t at driving.

      • +1

To answer your actual question, how to drive better, you could take a defensive driving course. Depending on your state, it could earn you back some points on your license if you have any missing, and could save you some money on insurance.

        • -2

What do you mean "Depending on your state, it could earn you back some points on your license if you have any missing" How can you have points "missing"?

          • @Rako: Well I don't think it gives you extra points if you haven't lost any, but maybe it does. Could be worth checking.

I mean yes you don't lose demerit points, you gain them. But it's the same difference. Some people think of it as having 12 points to lose before disqualification, rather than 12 points to gain. Probably depends on your point of view.

There won't be negative points so if you don't already have demerit points then you won't go into negative to have some extra buffer.

            • @AustriaBargain: "Some people think of it as having 12 points to lose before disqualification" Some people are incorrect!

              • @Rako: What's the difference though. 12 points to lose before disqualification, 12 months to gain, it's the same thing. If you're confident you'll lose some points at some point, might be helpful to think of it as 12 to lose, each point being a chance to get away with bad driving until they are all gone.

                • +2

                  @AustriaBargain:

                  What's the difference though.

It's called a demerit point, so as the name suggests you start with zero and get points if you break the law.

                  • -1

@ValueInvesting: Yeah, demerit points. You start with 12 and if you get to zero, and lose a points through breaking the law, then you lose your license. What's the difference? If one person understood it the right way and someone else understood it the other way, then what difference does it make.

                    • +3

@AustriaBargain: "What's the difference?" Motorists gain points for traffic offences. Motorists do not lose points for traffic offences.
This is incorrect "You start with 12 and if you get to zero, and lose a points through breaking the law, then you lose your license"
I don't understand why people promote this myth.

                      • @Rako: I'm asking what is the practical difference. If one were to believe the myth and be ignorant of how it actually works, what would the consequences be?

                        • +1

@AustriaBargain: The consequences could be that because of their confusion about how the demerit system works their licence might be cancelled due to traffic offences but they continue driving because they find they have gained points! They might have accumulated as much as say 20 points & think they are well & truly safe & the authorities have made an error cancelling their licence.

                          • @Rako: If the first time they check their points it showed 20, their license would already be cancelled. I guess they could check it and see 6 points and assume it means they have 6 left rather than 6 accrued. Well that would be no difference, if they see 5 points they might assume they have already spent 7 of their 12. And if they see 10 they might assume they have 10 left, instead of just 2 more to go until disqualification. Okay then I guess you're right, if they check their demerit point status on their myState app then it could lead to confusion that makes them think they have more chances left than they really do.

                            • @AustriaBargain: Looks like I'm in trouble my CTP renewal came in this morning under driving history it shows demerit points 0. Does this mean I've lost my licence & I shouldn't be driving?

                              • @Rako: Yup, you'd better hand yourself into the police station. Bring some cash with you so when they give you back your possessions 30 years from now you'll be able to pay for the robo taxi to the men's shelter.

                          • @Rako: The consequences would be they don't understand English or the way the law works. For your average Joe it doesn't matter because they're just counting up to 12, however that doesn't make it correct.

                            See here https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/demerit

                            and here https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/demerit…

                    • @AustriaBargain: You do realise that your license gets suspended when you accumulate 13 points not 12.

  • +7

Do not speed past speed cameras

    • +15

Fines Victoria hates this one simple trick…

      • -1

They are trying to ban it.

        • banning speed cameras or speeding?

  • +1

    Another mintee moment ®️™️

  • You got a fine? Dont push the long pedal so hard

    • -1

he did do 87 tho, past a mobile scum, 2 over and you're done in vic

  • +4

When a car in front of you hit a break it means for you to be cautious to proceed rather than quickly go to left lane and speed to 87km/hour.
Sound in video does appear half way - I believe you didn't even turn on your blinker when you change lane, let alone to leave it on for few more seconds - let's pray you did check your blind spot when you change lane.
Your gap with the front of the car is about 2 seconds - do 3 seconds instead.

  • +2

Identify as a motorcycle and remove the front plate.

  • I never get speeding tickets in my GOGGO Mobil 👍🏻

  • +16

Just to help you with the mental side of speeding/ getting in the car to get somewhere, you are literally going to absolute fastest you can from point A to B, by doing the speed limit. The only way to get to where you want to get to faster, is to leave earlier. For a 20-30km drive, going 10km+ over the limit, factoring in the lights and traffic etc, will only save you 2 minutes (!!!). Add in the fact you are burning more fuel revving the car out, you are losing even more time and money at the petrol station recovering the effort of the time spent speeding.

If you want to enjoy the thrill of speeding and overtaking cars, get into go-kart racing and build from there.

Driving on public roads is a privilege that should never be taken lightly. Respect others on the roads and respect yourself to not cause an accident.

  • -1

Its actually pretty rare for most of the cars to be doing 15kph under the posted speed most people are in a rush and are pretty close to the speed limit or a bit over.

Maybe in your rush your not actually looking at the speedo as much as you think.

    • -2

Strongly strongly disagree. That road in particular its common for people do be doing 60 in an 80 zone. Generally with no hazards ahead

  • +3

Just don't speed, it's honestly not worth it from a financial point of view or safety point of view.

      • +9

If everyone around you is following the road rules and you have to speed to get out of a sticky situation it means you did something stupid leading up to it. Take the defensive driving course mentioned before because the mentality you have when driving is dangerous.

      • +9

Comments like that make it sound like you arent gping to learn anything here.

      • +2

This could very rarely be true. If it is, the police will likely let you off with a warning, for example you accelerated to avoid getting t-boned by a semi. Most likely you've never been in a situation that justifies it in your life.

        • If the semi is following the road rules and OP is going to get t-boned, it probably means he failed to give way.

  • Just pay the fines - its better than having to deal with the dressing downs you get from online road rule nazis who believe that 1 km/h over the speed limit should be punished via public hanging.

      • +1

honestly dont plan to change my driving behaviour too much

Then why ask "what to do differently"?

Interesting to see people's POV that in relation to speeding though

Yea.. its not specialist knowledge that speeding = fine and speeding is entirely optional.

  • +1

That was the most obvious speed camera car on the side the road I’ve ever seen! They usually hide much better than that. You should have seen that OP.

    • -1

I mean, from my driving position i could only see them post lane change.

  • +1

Impatience got you there. Why are you cruising along in the RH lane when you need to turn left just up the road?

    • -7

Because earlier in the road, there is significant people that turn left and it banks up. So its just part of the route to jump right to avoid that.its not a rush thing, its more so just knowing the roads in your area.

      • +4

So impatience got you there. Just queue up like everyone else who knows the road and speed cameras and don't cut the queue.

  • Use Waze and Radarbot (at the same time) all the time. You can make Radarbot scream at you when you go over the speed limit.

  • +1

Sucked in LMAO, there was no car beside you and you wanted to be a F1 driver to switch lanes? Literally the guy beside you turned into the side street.

  • -1

Forget these righteous ozbargainers that think they know everything and have never made a mistake their whole life. They're the ones holding up the traffic everywhere and accelerating annoyingly slow in their camrys. Sometimes speeding temporarily is the safe thing to do. Unfortunately fixed/mobile speed cameras have no discretion on that though. You didn't really do anything wrong, just got unlucky. Downvote me OZB, I don't care.

  • +2

    I haven't had a fine in 8 years btw…
