    good tablet, highly recommend..

  • See my forum thread here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/84637 for some possible tips on getting a lower price on the Nexus 7. Particularly if your an AMEX holder.

    • +4

AMEX offer is over. It finished Nov 18th

  • better than ipad mini?

    • Who would win a fight, a lion or a leopard.

      • +1

a lion would kick the sh1t out of a leopard

        • How about a lion and a tiger, that I'd like to see.

        • I'll have my mondey on a Siberian Tiger anyday

        • I think the terrain in which the fight occured may influence the outcome.

Pretty sure i have read that in an orchestrated pit fight situation lions usually beat siberian tigers but have no chance against Bengal tigers.

In 19th century California they did a lot of grizzly bear versus lion fights in which the bear made short work of the lion (who apparently has quite a thin skull). However, i reckon that is an unfair competition. Firstly, the lion had travelled way further (ie from Africa on a ship) and would not have been anywhere near the top of its game. Secondly, I reckon the lion would have a better chance to utilize its speed and agility in a wild setting.

        • Exactly, a lion could totally turn tail and run away in the wild. Lol.

        • What about a Liger against a Tion ?

    • yep :)

    • -1

Absolutely. See Mashable's take on it: http://mashable.com/2012/11/06/nexus-7-vs-ipad-mini/

      • Well, after reading that I wouldn't say "absolutely". Basically Mashable's opinion is:
*Easier to hold - Well ok, but that comes at the expense of less screen size. So neither is "better", just different for different personal preferences.
        * Cheaper - That may make it better value, but certainly doesn't make it "better". Personally I don't mind paying bit more for Apple products. Once again, personal preference.

        iPad Mini:
        Pros -
        Far more tablet optimised apps
        Great build quality
Great warranty process, replacement in minutes at any Apple Store.
        Long OS update support.

        Cons -
        Price
        Out dated hardware
        iCloud is beyond shit

        Nexus 7:
        Pros -
        Cheap
        More portable
        Google Apps are great

        Cons -
Lots of reports of hardware issues
No physical Google stores for warranty claims, could be without device for weeks
        Lacking tablet optimised apps
Android OS updates suck. Eg. Nexus S will not receive official update to 4.2, despite Google releasing it less than 2 years ago.

        • iPad Mini

          Pros-
Far more tablet optimised apps [Apps like PayPal which are iphone compatible are zoomed by iPad, they are not tablet optimised]
          Apple Physical presence [Agree}

          Cons-
          Cannot customize screen
Hard to sync with your computer
          Price
          Accessories are expensive
Support - 3G Version - Use maps for navigation

          Nexus 7

          Pros-
          Cheap - Value for money
Google Store - Good number of apps and games (Compare to iPad)
          NFC support

          Cons-
          No Physical presence
Android Update [4.2 is not a major change, 4.2 must be an update from 4.1 or 4.14 something which means small bug fix. Which you will find in iphone as well. Apple has only 8-9 devices and Android is used by lot more number of devices. It is ok if 1-3 devices receives updates a little bit late]

        • is there any reason to have NFC support on a tablet?

        • iPad:
          "Cannot customize screen"
Can if you jailbreak, atm my iPad 3's home screen looks near identical to Note 10.1.

"Hard to sync with your computer"
Once again personal opinion. I love iTunes, manually copying stuff over via Finder[Mac]/Explorer[Windows] is shit IMO.

          "Price"
          Agreed

          "Accessories are expensive"
At least a wide range of accessories are available.

          Nexus 7:
          "Cheap - Value for money"
          Sure

"Google Store - Good number of apps and games (Compare to iPad)"
Ok, you have got to be kidding. The Play Store is a joke. So many of the apps look like they were designed by a first year uni student. Also, a lot of the apps on Play Store aren't designed for Tablet. Yes I know Android is resolution independent, but because something scales automatically, doesn't mean it does it well. There are far more iPad apps compared to Android apps that the developer has actually put specific support for tablets in.

          "NFC support"
If you asked 10 people on the street what NFC was, I doubt you'd get 1 who would know. If you asked 10 people with NFC devices how often they've used the feature, I doubt you'd get a response other than never.

"Apple has only 8-9 devices and Android is used by lot more number of devices."
The point and promise of the Nexus program from Google was they would be supporting the devices directly. Google only has to 'look after' Nexus One, Nexus S, Nexus Galaxy, Nexus 4 and Nexus 10, everything else is the manufacturers responsibility. So FIVE devices. Yet they can't even mange to do that.

"It is ok if 1-3 devices receives updates a little bit late"
Nexus S, less than 2 years old, will NEVER receive an official update beyond 4.1.

You forgot about the Nexus 7. Android was pretty crappy at the start, but it's advanced much more than iOS. Also iphone 4, 4s, 5 are pretty much the same thing, no wonder it's so easy to update.

        • "Android was pretty crappy at the start, but it's advanced much more than iOS"
I've used ICS for about 6 months on a tablet, and yes it's come along way since I last used it (Gingerbread & Froyo). I will say the interface is light years ahead of iOS but for every other aspect of the OSs, I'd give the crown to iOS. With that said, once jailbroken, I can spruce up the interface almost as much as an Android user.

"Also iphone 4, 4s, 5 are pretty much the same thing, no wonder it's so easy to update."
I always hear excuses like this when it comes to how shit updates are in Android world. Whilst it is a valid reason, it's not a justification. Hard or not, Google has a responsibility to support their devices.

        • +1

Yes, Nexus S won't receive an update beyond 4.1. Google devices receive 18 months to 2 years of updates. In this case, it's 18 months because the 512MB RAM can't handle 4.2 features, mainly the updated Google Now. Apple on the hand released iOS6 for the iPhone 4 but will never offer Siri or turn-by-turn directions. So even though the Nexus S won't receive updates it has Google Now (in many ways a Siri equivalent) and turn-by-turn which the iPhone 4 never will.

Anyway, it's pointless talking about updates without referring to the OS itself. Some people love Jelly Bean, others love iOS 6. Some people - like me - think Jelly bean 4.1 is way ahead of IOS 6. This is far more important. If my computer runs Ubuntu, I can update the OS more often than if I ran windows. So obviously Ubuntu > Windows?

        • Yes, Apple cut down features on updates on older devices, but at least they continue to receive important security whole fixes. What if a vulnerability is found in 4.1, are all Nexus S user meant to either accept all their personal data may be compromised or forced to dump a perfect working phone?

Btw, Siri and turn-by-turn can be installed on iPhone 4 easily once Jailbroken.

        • Agree, It is personal preference. I recently switched from Samsung to Apple 5 and to be frank, I like dlna connectivity in Samsung which is not in nexus and iphone and now I am thinking to switch back to Samsung.

About NFC, Pay Pass is a good example of NFC, and sooner or later, this technology will be found everywhere, ticketing service, advertisements on phone via poster, Storing Woolworth or Coles reward card in phone etc. This technology wasn't successful years back due to limitation of applications and devices.

And if you jailbreak your iphone, then you are putting your data on risk. I forgot the virus name but that virus use to instal on jailbroken iphone and that virus use to send phone data without knowing the phone owner.

        • NFC is important because it will be used widely in the future

        • -2

Hahaha jailbreaking putting phone at risk….oh dear, thought you Andriod people were technical minded. Guess you just like to think you are.

Once you change the root password on the iPhone the security of a jailbroken iPhone is no different to that of an Andriod device, ie. anything can be installed. Is that a security risk, sure, but it's no different to Android's "openness" people love to sprout about

Btw, the only iPhone "virus" was actually a worm that simply changed the wallpaper and only effect people who hadn't change the defaul root password.

Edit: NFC widely used…sure, we'll see.

    • better, in that you can afford to buy two and place them next to each other… or one iPad mini :P

  • well for those who are after 32gb wifi only

    http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/maribyrnong/Asus_Google_Nexus_…

    plus $30 store credit

makes it cheaper than this OzB post (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/83285) - which seemed quite well received

    or buy the 32gb 3g

http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/Asus_Google_Nexus_7i… and something else worth a couple of dollars, to get the total over $400 (if i read the T&C's correctly), to get $50 store credit

  • before this deal you could price match OW with CPL @ $249 OR MSY @ $249

EDIT: Only problem is the stock levels at OW are usually quite low

  • Not good because we cannot price match at OW for 5% more discount :p
