  • nice…

  • Good deal

    • The problem is that Telstra's recharges are a complete rip off! You will end up paying so much more in the long run even though this wifi modem is a good deal.

I have an Optus wifi modem (HSPA+ not 4G) that always downloads between 500kbps and 1.5mBps in my area (much higher in some areas). I only pay $24.95 a month for a 10GB 'month-to-month' plan. That is, I can cancel the plan whenever I want without fees.

I just don't know how Telstra can justify thinking 12GB is worth $180, even if it's valid for 365 days.

      • +3

They can justify it because, like you said, you only get 0.5 to 1.5MB/s.
On Telstra you can get 2MB/s to 6MB/s in almost every city and you have better coverage out of the city. In areas with slower download speeds, Optus may not even work.

I have an Optus SIM with 5GB/month and can't even use up 1GB in a month if I try. It's so slow I don't feel like doing anything serious.
12GB on Telstra actually gets used.

$180 may be too expensive but this deal gives you 17GB over 400 days (more than a year) and a free 4G modem (which is worth over $100 on ebay) for about $170.

        • +1

          +1.

In addition, we're also talking about 4G that is available in most areas close to the CBD. That would be 20-30Mbps which is a bit higher than what Gozzhogger is getting ;)

      • +3

For some people, time is money and when you're doing remote support it doesn't matter how much the data costs because you'll be making 1000000x that amount, what you want is a stable and reliable connection, something that I am YET to see on optus, but DO occassionally see in some areas for vodafone, and is almost always available on Telstra

when you're comparing all the providers, you need to compare all the quantitative and qualitative aspects. For this reason no single person is the same, and noone can give you a definitive answer as to which provider is best.

  • +1

and i believe this 4G wifi modem comes with 5GB for the first 30 days too
    good pick up

    • +1

      i think you are correct…

      https://www.telstra.com.au/online-shop/mobile-broadband-prod…

so you get 395 days in total !!!

      • -1

the original 5GB expires after 30 days and you can't extend that unfortunately!

      • -1

only if you use the recharge after 30 days. The 3GB/30 days does not get extended by adding credit.

        • -1

          5GB/30 days ;)

        • -1

          xD yeah that

  • -1

So does the recharge voucher come seperately so it can be used to recharge another device?

    • from the way it adds to cart and the fact that the modem says 1-2 days shipping and the voucher says 2-3 days shipping i think it is separate

    • Comes up as a second item in the cart

  • -2

2GB is about $10 usually on a vodafone recharge, this will get lots of negs because of "vodafone"

    12GB roughly $60
    Is this modem worth $100?

    • +1

very easily, even if you can't get 4G you can get DC 3G

you can also very easily unlock this with DC unlocker for $9 or free if you know where to look :)

then you can use it on ANY network, quadband + 4G = win!

    • +11

      12GB roughly $60

      lol… what good is 12GB if you can't get a connection…

    • Well that's subjective. My experience with Vodafone in the past has been anything but pleasant, therefore I don't mind paying more for use of the Telstra network.

I used to recharge my Telstra next G dongle with $150 credit, which gave me 10GB data, valid for 365 days.

Taking all that in to account, it seems like you buy the recharge voucher and get the modem for free. Which isn't bad at all.

      • Yep, vodafone at my local tower I can achieve around 500kB/s, but on telstra i was doing 1.5MB/s, ping times were around the same if not swinging slightly in vodafone's favour, mainly because my local tower uses microwave dish links whereas vodafone uses cable backhaul

        • What benefit is there to have super fast downloads speeds if you are capped and using it out portably though?, For me main fast download speeds if are only useful for unlimited data packs like home. Anyway Vodafone network is pretty good in SA, can keep up with HD youtube videos + quick browsing.

    • +1

this will get lots of negs because of "vodafone"

or on the other hand, it probably won't, because it's not vodafone

      Is this modem worth $100?

      Selling for $169 on ebay

      • Actually the only one that sold recently sold for $107.50. All the others are only listings - but not selling.

  • +1
    • $4.95 delivery

    aren't orders over $100 free delivery ?????????

    • +1

if you read the posting apparently it only applies to items after the first one, and i thought so too and had to read again, sucks but that's how it is unfortunately

      • +3

that's dodgy… so if shipping isn't free, they shouldn't be putting up a huge FREE DELIVERY banner on the site…

      • +1

When I tried this, It came out total of $169 after the checkout page and shows discounted postage at the enter details page.

        http://s12.postimage.org/w5oaeru0d/postage.png

There's nothing there to state pickup and both got discounted..

        • Same here, shipping goes on, then off just before total.

          Item Subtotal $169.00
          Delivery $ 4.95
          Shipping Discount -$4.95

          Total $169.00
          Total Includes $15.36 GST

        • hrm, that sucks, when i went through it charged me $4.95 shipping, damnit!

        • +1

That's rough. OP posts this brilliant deal then gets ripped off by Dick.

        • Oh wow, The item left my card as I was going to enter my details and I put it back into my cart and now it charges $4.95. Either someone here is a rep and changed it or it was a bug.

EDIT: Successfully checked out and it took $169 from me when it said $169 + 4.95

        • +1

yeah there's definitely a weird bug in the system…
I went through the first time, wanted to charge me 4.95 shipping, but then I went back and changed my postcode / delivery address and then it decided to give me a shipping discount for no reason! lol

So if anyone can be bothered, when you've reached the final checkout page, go right back and try and change the postcode or your delivery address and see if that works for you!
          http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/3765/screenshot20121122at…

        • Just contact DS by phone and they should refund you the $4.95

        • That's rough. OP posts this brilliant deal then gets ripped off by Dick.

          He got dicked. :)

  • Looks like it's available for click and collect too if you don't want to pay shipping

    • -2

      .

    • Ok my bad - when I went to do Click and Collect it said the $180 recharge isn't in stock in any stores, so looks like this is a delivery-only deal.

      • Just do 1 of each and you can cancel 1 or the other.

    Review here:

    http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/broadband/telstra/wi-fi…

    biggest downfall IMO:

"…biggest disappointment of the Telstra pre-paid Wi-Fi 4G modem is its battery life. In our tests, it lasted just over three hours before needing to be recharged. This is nearly an hour short of the four hours ZTE quotes on its specifications sheet…"

    3 hours….

    • +2

I personally have never drained the battery and it knows how to go into low power state when your devices aren't using the internet. However I've never come close to draining it but that's because I carry a USB battery pack anyway.

If you're using it with a laptop you can charge from there, chances are you'll be somewhere where there's USB power available :), when there isn't you can make do with a 60000000mah capacity battery from ebay

    • i assume you can still use it whilst it's charging though?

can't you just get one of those cheap battery packs to keep it topped up ?

      edit : thanks peter05….

      • yeah you can use it while it's charging, i don't even run it off the battery unless its just for a quick email check etc

yeah just buy the battery packs from ebay or whatever, works well and i can run my switch/router etc off of it :D

    • +1

Many people use a USB 4G device. They don't have any battery life.

It's not as good as the postpaid 4G wireless devices from Telstra but for the money I think this is an incredibly good offer.

    • Also chunky and heavy compard with 3G devices but it does the job.

      • Dimension info
        Packaged Weight (kg) 0.238
        Product Dimension Information 100 (H) x 58 (L) x 16 (W) mm

Only big as a phone and heavy as 2X packet of chips.

  • +1

    Good deal

  • It doesn't say anything about the voucher when you do click and collect

  • +1

Is it compatible with Optus? I think Telstra and Optus use LTE 1800.

    • +1

Yes it should be using the same band but the device would be locked to Telstra so you have to unlock it first.

  • Why doesn't this deal get the "HOT" logo like this Vodafone deal gets http://dicksmith.com.au/product/EB5018/vodafone-pocket-wifi-…

This is much better value in my opinion

  • +2

I wonder if this is a mistake; in their latest catalogue this is listed at $299, being a saving of $50 off the combined price.

    • +3

      That's correct http://i49.tinypic.com/25kod2u.jpg

We will be very lucky if this gets honoured. No wonder the voucher does not show up when you do click and collect. Then again, maybe the new owners are not as tight as Woolies and the deal will get honoured, just like when they had the computer glitch during their one day sale not so long ago.

    • Agreed :( Hopefully they will honour it anyway.

  • +1

Good Deal! Bought the modem and recharge seperately when it first came out.. How long do the recharge vouchers last if you don't use the code? As in would the voucher itself expire if I don't use it until next year?

    • it should say on the voucher

  • +2

Just bought one thx, btw my shipping got waived. FREE shipping for me
    so AUD 169 in total
Was thinking of this deal intially
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/EB5018/vodafone-pocket-wifi-…
glad i saw this !!! haha

  • +8

    GAHHHHH
Another one of those "Maybe I should buy it because it's cheap and I MIGHT use it in the future"…

  • +1

The only con for this deal is, if you are a LTE coverage area and have poor self control. You will using your data like no tomorrow. 17GB of data so easy to blow.

  • Bought one as I just couldn't resist. :) My iphone is on vodafone so its piss-poor speeds and connectivity, my ipads on telstra 3g which is pretty damn good. However, I have to pay $20 for data (1GB) monthly. This is bloody sweet… nominal cost for 12GB (would cost me $240 during my normal course of usage), connects 5 devices and is 4G.

    • I have to pay $20 for data (1GB) monthly.

Are you on an Ipad plan? I thought they had 3GB a month instead of one - it might be worth checking with Telstra that they have you on the correct plan.

      • I'm on pre-paid. :) I cannot go into any plans with Telstra due to "visa restrictions".

    • Why not just do $180 for 12GB/365 days on the iPad?

      • I would like to use other devices on the wifi as well. For instance, as I'm using my iPhone with Vodafone (its a contract with another year to go ) on occasion I'd like to be able to use that instead of my ipad. Also, to use while traveling with my laptops. Plenty of use-cases. :)

I believe you can also unlock these devices so at a later stage when there are more competitive 4g services, I could always switch over.

        • I'm with Hintswen. The 12GB over 12 months for $180 is the same prepaid plan for the iPad. However you're stuck if you have the original iPad or iPad 2. Since the iPad 3, you could share your internet connection. In effect, use your iPad (3 or later, including mini) instead of this device. You will need the 3 or mini to get LTE however.

  • thanks OP, bought 1 for my mum but $4.95 delivery was not waived :P

  • +4

i gotta stop going onto OzBargains.. my wallet is getting ever so light… =S

  • does the recharge work for an ipad prepaid sim?

edit: it does i checked with telstra

  • Bought one… delivery fee not waived. Lucky I spotted this as I was about to reload my prepaid with another years worth of credit, thanks to the OP.

  • can i use this sim in a ipad or nexus 3G? (have one coming any day now from shipito)

Will probably sell off the MF91 4G

    • generally the sims are locked to the telstra device. however i have verified with telstra that u can use the recharge toward a prepaid dataplan so maybe buy a $30 sim that comes with 3gb for 30 days and then use the recharge toward it. still cheaper than buying both seperately and you can still sell off the device. however id be careful if sell it they usually take your personal details incase the sim is misused, the government usually requires a record. not sure if dse follow procedure tho.

  • Click and collect worked.for me most Stores around brisbane show stock

  • Hmm.. with so many people buying these, I suspect it will be cancelled this morning as a mistake…

  • In the process of buying. Just before 'paypal' got the -4.95 discount, so looks like I am getting the lot for 169!

    • yup, 169 it is

      • Got the modem first and then the 180 voucher followed. 4G rocks! Thanks again OP, now I can experience the legend on my piss poor optus device which I still have 12 mths to go in contract.

  • Thanks OP. click and collect didnt work but delivey fee was waived at the end

  • Ok mine doesn't show the recharge voucher as a separate item (just the Telstra MF91 4G modem)

    anyone else ?

Don't want to bother if voucher not included of course…

    • under the cart summary it shows the modem and voucher on separate lines.

      • @ anthman -Ok was doing as a store pick up…but just tried again as a delivery and seems to be ok. THANKS

  • +1

Thanks OP. I can claim against my tax as it is work related so it brings this price down for me further.

  • Get in quick. Looks like it is a Price Error. In the new Catalogue it says this deal is $299 (Save $50)

  • Can anyone point me to where it says $180 recharge = XXGb with 365 days expiry? Can't seem to find this anywhere. Thanks.

  • +1

In store now. Waiting to see if they will honour the deal. Phone calls being made to HO I imagine.

I thought it would be a simple case of yes or no.

    • Any update?

  • Noice …. Thanks OP! ;)

  • +1

It's being honoured for now but it will be changing soon. Get in quick. Changes have to be made in NZ and can take upto 1 hour to change.

  • Cheers got 1 thanks.

For those that haven't experienced 4G yet - the speeds often exceed my home ADSL2+ connection lol. 40mb down and 25mb up is crazy.

    • +2

      Just remember its ONLY 12GB

  • Thanks OP, just got one and let's hope they will honour it with the click and collect…

  • i called them and ask is it click and collect too and tthe guy say deal is ONLINE ONLY.. so i assume it should be real and not price error.

  • Can I use the $180 recharge for my mobile and use it for 5 x $30 encore offers?

  • I checked in North Sydney store and the person told me, it is a pricing error. the advertised price is much higher and was not interested to sell that in store. Ordered online and when on payment screen, it reduce the shipping charges.

Lets see, if they honour the deal.

  • great deal,

except i'm already on a 2gb plan with telstra every month, on my mobile :(

  • +1

I ordered mine last night, the modem is sitting at "Backordered", and the Telstra card is at "In Progress"

    • same

    • same aswell. Curious why the online store says 'stock available'.

  • For those charged with delivery fee $4.95, I can confirm it is a bug that DS replied my email would refund the delivery fee.
