What is a good cheap CPU cooler to pair with this?

    • Interested in this too! Especially if it can fit into an NR200 case.

      • Cooler I have seems good , wasn’t exy:
        ID-COOLING SE-207-XT Slim

Fan is 1x 120mm, fits nr200p just fine.

        Rig:
        NR200P / 5700X3D / 4070ti super.
GPU mounted in MB direct , 2x 120mm top of case
PBO is -20 or -22 or so on all cores (in bios)

Cinebench MC (from a cold boot on a cold day)
Ramps up to 60C as it starts
Next 2-3min slow rise to 70
        At 5 min mark, 72C
Max temp on any cpu sensor was 75.8

        (Score was 13478)

Used HW info for it’s better discovery of sensors, and Open hardware monitor for its graph plot.

        Some notes for Beam NG
Beamng is known to be a cpu hog. The fact it needs to do a physics calc for each frame means cpu can affect it a lot. (Anecdotally , I think you also need a lot of cpu headroom for transient spikes)

The cpu runs WCUSA map with 8-10 cars, ultra settings, dynamic reflections and mirrors on, no gfx mods active, holds 60fps pretty well even with cops after me. (More traffic+Replay record can pull it to the 50s, hence the conservative 8ish cars)

Temps in game generally stabilise at 70 but sometimes 75 if I’m pushing it in game. and I think white fair considering the GPU is dumping a fair bit of heat :)

        • I'm using a cheap ID-COOLING SE-224-XT in a high airflow case and it works well enough for me, with all settings stock it peaked at around 75C running CinebenchR23 MC after 10mins.

I can get the CPU drop that temperature by around 10% by messing with PBO and power limits, at the expense of approx. 2.5% in MC score.

I haven't tested BeamNG.drive yet, but I'm sure it would push the CPU in a way unlike most other games.. probably my favourite driving game, for the sandbox driving mode :D

    My will has been broken.

  • Have a 4080 Super with a 3700X, would upgrading to the 5700X3D be worthwhile?

    • -1

Assuming you are gaming on a resolution that can benefit from the fps increase (and has a gaming monitor supporting it), then yes. However, with 4080S, it might be best to wait for 5800X3D to be discounted and get that instead. With Ryzen 9xxx series coming, it is hard to imagine 5xxx series CPU prices not dropping further.

Another thing is that personally, I would recommend you wait for Ryzen 9xxx series CPUs. As I have a Ryzen 7xxx series system, it doesn't feel right for me to recommend someone with a quality GPU to go Ryzen 5xxx series X3D upgrade (kinda feel like telling someone to get a CPU that's inferior than my system purchased last year, especially when that person has a more powerful GPU than what I have with my system). If you don't have an X570 or B550 based setup (i.e. you have X470 or B450), then I really think you should consider a system upgrade (PCIe gen 5 support on CPU + chipset supporting PCIe gen 4, 2.5Gbps LAN standard, and the upcoming chipset is likely to include USB4 and WiFi7 support).

      • Running a 1440P wide monitor that does up to 144Hz. Sure an AM5 upgrade would be nice, but that's gonna cost me 4x as much as the CPU upgrade, best case scenario.

Definately a huge upgrade with 1440p or below, if you aren't ready for full platform upgrade soon. 4k, may not as huge but still decent.
The chart tested with 4090, but 4080s shouldn't too much difference (compare 3700x to 5800x3d as 5700x3d just slighly slower)

  • Thinking of upgrading my son's 3600/2060 Super combo with a 5700x3D/4070 Super and this came up.

Seems like a great price and 4070 Supers can be had for under $900 at the moment. Should be a decent upgrade

  • Seems to be $153 USD now damn it

Ordered anyway, ended up being $232 AUD, which is still a great price compared to buying locally

  • Just had a quick look, and looks like it's about US$132 delivered right now.

Edit. This is the same store, right?

    • That's the 5700X. Not X3D.

Well, this is embarrassing. I promise I can read.

  • Mine turned up this morning, less than a week after ordering. I haven't installed it yet, but it looks legit. The sticker it came with is a for a Ryzen 4000 series though :D

Mine arrived today. Whacked it straight in. No issues at all.

    • Yeah, installed mine earlier, all good. I just had to update the BIOS on the motherboard as it was from 2020 :D

  • Anyone else got the rng lemon? Cause after a whole week of trouble shooting I found the cpu to the be culprit of my crashes (yes BIOS is up to date). I didn't want to believe it because it was working fine for 3 weeks, and manage to pull off multiple stability stress tests earlier on.

Hopefully the return process works out…

    • I found the same thing today, been BSOD'ing the last few weeks and couldn't figure it out. Switched back my 5600X and no issues.

How'd you go in the end?

      • Mine has been fine. No crashes to date.

        Good luck in resolution process

        • Mine too, bit of a worry though. Only had mine for a month so far
