This makes the new MG3 look even more overpriced.

  • +2

Whoever posted the car ads, i hope you guys get the commission from the company 👿

  • How TF is it pronounced? Sherry? Or Cherie? Cherry?

    • Sherrie

    • +4

      Qíruì

        Hey Siri !

    • "Chur-Li" I think….

      • That's how my Chinese parents would say it so it must be it lol

  • They need to fix the website first before trying to sell more cars. Taking too long to load.

  • +1

This car looks like a frog 🐸

  • +1

Is there at least a supply chain for these things now? I remember reading about a bloke who had a minor crash and it took months just to get the basic parts to repair it.

    • I had someone back into my car's and the parts were available. Delays were on the body shop side for me at least.

  • +2

    more planned obsolescence…..

  • -1

A distinctive face that can’t be missed
The avant-garde face of the Omoda 5 combines a gradient grid and
diamond pattern to create a 3D effect, embodying the technology and
future-oriented principles of its design. You'll agree it's horrendous.

  • +2

I own the Chery Omoda Ex as a second rarely used car but can vouch for its quality and value for money. Not familiar with the FX but the price is killer!

Edit: The FX is a grade below the BX.

  • +3

What happened the last time Chery was in Australia, they seemed to of disappeared for a few years, I don't see may older cars on the road either, admittedly the old ones you do see look like they are falling apart

    • +7

They left because they made unsafe cars and the Australian market stopped buying them

Surprised they didn't at least try to change the name when they came back.

      • +1

This time they added a red line to their car so..

    • So Chery became a big player in China. They ended up building land rover and Jaguar cars for the Chinese market. Basically assembling kits sent from abroad.

So I believe this has helped them make relatively better products

    • 10 years ago China exported 0.8 million cars per year, now China export 5 million cars per year and still growing. Things have changed for Chinese cars both domestically and internationally.

  • Do you need to run 95 fuel with these?

    • +1

Had one of these for 2 weeks. 91 was fine.

That wasn't this model though so caveat emptor

    • For 1.5t models recommend fuel is 91, for the 1.6t Omoda GT and GT AWD 95 is recommended.

  • +2

goodluck with CVT transmission, thats all i can say. bye

  • +5

1.5L gutless piece of shit for Aus Conditions

    • +1

108kW with a 1500kg car will do that. Can't imagine this has any over taking power at all.

    • Gutless power for any part of the world. But the NPC's wont care about that and will just see a cheap suv.

    • -1

We don't have an autobahn mate

      • +2

        It's not about top speed

It's about being actually able to overtake someone without blowing the engine up

        • +2

i mean you guys dont even do the least bit of research

the car has 108kW and 210Nm on a ~1,400kg chassis

its already been tested… it pulls 9.5 for 0-100 which is about what you'd expect for small suv

80-120 for overtake is 6.5 secs which is also fair

          • +1

            @tonyjzx:

the car has 108kW and 210Nm on a ~1,400kg chassis

And FWIW, the first V8 Commodore was only 87kw for the 4.2l and 114kw for the 5.0l.

  • +3

I love how one of the main features they are proud of for the top spec model is "red brake callipers"

    • +1

      Probably their best feature!

      • +2

If they're anything like the MG red callipers, they're very poorly spray painted with overspray everywhere.

  • -2

How long are we allowed to drive petrol cars for in Australia? Aren't "Big EV" trying to get them phased out?

    • -1

Toyota is one of the largest manufacturers in the world and are still focusing on v6's and v8's. Good luck trying to 'phase' them out.

    • facepalm.

Yeah, and where's all the electricity going to come from to charge all these vehicles? What about old apartments that can't have that much power routed to them?

The days of ICE cars are numbered, but it's not in single or even low double digit years.

      • Yeah, and where's all the electricity going to come from to charge all these vehicles?

This question was asked years ago and the people that asked were shouted down and labelled coal eaters. It's 2024 and this question still hasn't been answered.

What about old apartments that can't have that much power routed to them?

Let them eat cake! We can't let poor people stand in the way of our new religion…

The days of ICE cars are numbered, but it's not in single or even low double digit years.

Not practicality no, but try getting any policy-maker on the Left to admit that.

    • -3

I wish big EV would phase out petrol that would be amazing.

  • Was interested in this but seems like a gas guzzler. Maybe when they make more efficient hybrid

Thought the interior and exterior looks aight for an entry level car tbh. The back looks like range rover and the inside looks quite polished if you dont spend more than 2s looking at it.

  • +2

Great! We need more competition in our market!

    Bring on more cheap cars!!!!

    • +1

We don't need cheap cars. We need quality and safe cars

      • Agreed. It's a blessing they're not making any right hand drive Cybertrucks

      • -1

So, is this car not safe?

        • Considering why Chery left the Australian market last time, and the stories coming out of China from Chinese made cars where safety features just aren't deploying in major incidents, I wouldn't be driving one.

But I look forward to being downvoted by the shills.

          • -1

            @coffeeinmyveins: I'm not interested in a non-hybrid car.

But the MG3 2024 looks interesting.

            And the GMW Haval H6.

Is there a source for their safety issues?

      • We don't need cheap cars. We need quality and safe cars

according to Ancap it has 5-stars? that is literally the highest saftey standard

        https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/chery/omoda-5/b8a56a

As for quality of the Chery cars themselves i guess i cant comment as they haven't been in the market long enough but and SUV with a good warrenty and all those features if probably 'worth' the gamble for struggling Australians esp families struggling with the insane cost of living crisis we are going though

  • -1

Looks like a gutless turd to me but hey I could be wrong.

  • +2

    Like $6000 cheaper!

In 2023 their FX model was selling at ~22k, now jumped to almost 28k. I certainly slept through all of my math classes but just can't with this math.

  • +2

In February 2024, Chery Australia issued a safety recall of 5,901 units of the Omoda 5 due to a manufacturing defect. The bolt securing the brake pipe union may not have been tightened sufficiently which could cause the brake fluid to leak and result in reduced braking performance.

LOL, I’m laughing at all those who will buy this car…

    • +1

Or you could be gullible enough to buy a crap german mobile and die in a more expensive crash when your car stops steering
      https://www.news.com.au/technology/motoring/car-advice/merce…

    • Every car brand has had safety recalls. I think the Chery are absolute rubbish quality and won't last the test of time (there's no chance that these cars are making it past 7 years) but yeah, look at Hyandai, Kia, Toyota. All had recalls.

      • My Mazda had been recalled.

  • Someones not making their eofy targets methinks

  • how long is the warranty?

    • 7 years surprisingly

      • how long will they actually honour it?

        • +1

Longer than any of the euros

      • +2

The company has to stay in Australia that long. They didn't last time they came here, so I would take this with a grain of salt.

Also warranties aren't a catch all for everything in a car.

  • -4

What an awful looking car, more junk from China.. just what we need on our roads

  • I drive a Toyota camry cuz its cheap and reliable. But this is one good looking car. For 7 year warranty, I am tempted at that price i am tempted

  • +1

Fuel consumption is pretty poor for a modern car

  • +3

I had the joy of driving one of these as a rental not long ago…

The touch screen stopped working and had to re-boot the infotainment system to get it working again, the control layout is very confusing.
all the safety features were stupidly intrusive and annoying, the lane monitoring was stricter than the CCP! I had to shut it all down to keep sane.

The ride was pretty woeful too, was both rough and floaty at the same time. My last car which was a slammed sports car had better compliance than this! But, it was hard to hear the sounds of the suspension crashing over the sound of the tyres…

Boot was not huge, two carry on suit cases and two laptop bags is all it really held without taking the parcel shelf off.

Nearly 1900kg with a 1.5L turbo… For that price you could get an i30, which would be better built, better resale, cheaper to run (both fuel and tyres) and nicer to drive.

    • +2

"But not an SUV so not safe" is honestly the mindset people would get comparing this to an i30…

    • +2

The ride was pretty woeful too, was both rough and floaty at the same time

This is what people look past when they see the price tag. They see the fancy looking exterior and the gadgets. but that's where it ends.

    • +1

      Nearly 1900kg with a 1.5L turbo

      1393kg Tare weight:

      https://cherymotor.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/OMODA-5…

1856kg is its Gross Vehicle Mass which is the weight of the car plus it's maximum payload.

I believe everything else you said.

      • +1

Whoops! I thought the 1900kg seemed a bit excessive!

        • +1

          All good!

Your review was pretty much exactly as I expected - the fundamentals such as handling, space efficiency and NVH suppression are just not there despite the blingy features and looks.

  • -2

    Is it electrified or gasoline?

  • +3

    "Nearly 1900kg with a 1.5L turbo"

Where are you folk getting that 1900kg from? Seen it a few times in this conversation. You must be confusing gross vehicle weight and tare weight.

  • -5

Made in China means bad quality. Buy it at your own risk

    • -2

Cheap thing not good, Good thing not cheap

  • The Internet's "996" overtime work trend has already spread to the automotive industry. First, CATL implemented the "896 work system", and then Chery Automobile was complained by employees for illegal overtime.

Recently, some netizens broke the news that Chery Automobile's employees in Shanghai accused Chery Automobile of illegal overtime. Not only were they not paid overtime, but they were only given a 10 yuan meal allowance for overtime work of more than 3 hours a day. In order to cover up the fact of overtime, the overtime time of employees was even uniformly changed to 5 pm on the system.

On July 1, several Chery Automobile employees revealed to Phoenix.com's "Eye of the Storm" that the above description is true. "Not only do we work overtime for free, but we also have to make overtime rankings every Monday, and some departments require a 99% attendance rate on Saturdays. Departments compare overtime hours, and those who fail to reach the overtime coefficient (load rate) will be notified." A Chery Automobile employee said.

Li Ming is currently an employee at Chery Automobile's headquarters in Wuhu. He told Phoenix.com's "Eye of the Storm" that the normal working day is 8.5 hours. Taking July as an example, there are 23 working days in 31 days, and the normal working hours are 8.523=195.5 hours. The load factor is 1, and the load factor of 1.4 is required to pass, which is 195.51.4=273.7 hours. At least 273.7 hours were clocked in in July.

I got the BX brand new for $28,999 and am extremely happy with it after a year of driving it.

No issues, very comfy, looks nice, fuel economy is relatively good compared to other cars releasing nowadays.

For the price, i definitely can't complain.

    • -1

wait until 3 more years, good luck.

      • Alright, thank you for wishing me good luck.

I hope you have a good time replying to everyones comments!

    • +1

Nice one mate. I have the EX. It's funny how I see one or two of these on the roads everyday.

  • This is a great deal.

Chery is known for quality, better than Japanese cars and cheaper.

    Many Chinese have this car.

    Good for Australian buyers.

    • -2

      For you, not for me.

    • +1

      Either sarcasm or astro-turfing

better than Japanese cars and cheaper.

Your social credit score just went up

    • Cheaper? Maybe for some models, but I see that Suzuki Swift looks cheaper.

      Better? 🤡

  • +2

Well Chery is now outselling brands like Honda, Renault and Skoda etc in our market and these have been here for decades. Expect no let up from the Chinese car makers.

  • +1

Well let's hope all the people waiting 2.5 years to get their car go here, so I don't have to wait so long!..What the F^&k is up with toyota…

    • It's surprising to me that a company like Toyota is not able to scale up to real demand and produce their cars in a reasonable timeframe. Having people waiting that long for a new vehicle is a systemic failure.

      • planned scarcity is a thing

if you make people wait for their cars you have no issues with selling a $160k Landcruiser 70… or a $55k mid spec RAV4… or a $70k Hilux…

the idea is to make people pay the most for each car

    • Nah we Malaysians only want cheap cheap la! Quality doesn't matter to us! LOL

  • Is there such a thing as Chinese car market reliability rankings, like Consumer Reports?
