How does this work- you solder each of the hexangonal PCBs to each other permanently, is that right? i.e. you can't change the configuration of PCBs around without desoldering the boards from each other?

And is there any control over lighting or is there a preset on/off pattern?

This is kind of interesting- I have never tried SMDs before.

  About how does this work question, yes, you are right. There is no control over lighting, when the usb cable pluged in, those pcbs which have been soldered together will be all light up.
