Omron HEM-7221 Blood Pressure Monitor - $154.75

11

Hi Folks,

I was told by the GP last week that I needed to measure my blood pressure more frequently, and keep a log book of readings, as I have some high blood pressure issues … He suggested a brand called Omron, which is stocked by Chemist Warehouse, and all the other large chain pharmacy stores.

the model I ended up going for is an HEM-7221, which has the best cuff size for my biceps, and will also fit my wife. Chemist Warehouse doesn't sell this model, but buying direct from Omron would have cost $199.95, and from MedShop, I paid $140.68 + GST.

another model, to use as a comparison is the HEM-7211, which has an RRP of $179.95, Chemist Warehouse sell for $155.99, and MedShop have for $116.14 + GST…

hope this saves someone else some money like it did me - last thing you need is high blood pressure from paying too much for a blood pressure monitor… LOL!

  • Put price in title thanks.

might be good to put some prices and other details in the heading.

A quick google check shows ozaroo charges $93.99 with free delivery for the 7221.

So does not seem like a bargain @ $140.68.

      eBay vs retailer…

Can always walk through the door of an established retailer.

      • There's many online retailers without a brick and mortar shopfront.

  • How is this better than one from aldi for $14.99

    • +3

I bought the Aldi one, and it consistently said that my blood pressure was 200 / 170, which it isn't!

      • +1

        Wot Aldi selling something dodge…NoWai

Whats your blood pressure right now? lol

        • +1

          right now? about 180 / 130 …

although given I was trying to share what was a bargain to me from an Australian based retailer, and getting slammed I'm sure it's going up…

  • Add GST so $154.75 + $8.50 for basic postage = $163.25 vs $93.99 yer sorry no deal.

One thing you may want to do is see if your healthfund is willing to pay part of it.
Some do - i know mine does :)

    • Just buy the most expensive/advanced model you can up to what your private health insurance covers.

Eg HCF pays up to $170, Medibank up to $200, depending on plan

Note most, if not all health insurers require tax invoice, so ie you can't Buy online from overseas sellers

  • Cheaper than amazon? Got 2 of these but it is 10 series for around $70 each delivered like 1 year ago, and that is not promotion just everyday price. Don't think there is any adv to buy local stock than amazon anyway.

I used to repair medical devices in a hospital and in my experience, if you care about the usefulness of the measurement, stay away from 'Drug Store' Blood Pressure Monitors like Omron or Aldi. We used to have patients that brought them in and when I measured them on against a simulator, they were off by between between 10% to 20%. Even the offset factor was so variable between measurements that you couldn't even relatively tell if your blood pressure was up or down as compared to your last reading.

    My recommendations:

    1) If you can afford it, go for a Welch Allyn Vital Signs Monitor, even if second or third hand - They are reliable as anything and can take a few knocks, even in a hospital environment. Parts are also easy to come by. BME List usually sells second hand medical equipment for cheap. See http://www.mail-archive.com/bmelist%40bme.asn.au/index.html

    2) If you can't afford a Welch Allyn, get an old fashioned sphygmomanometer and stethoscope for about $50 and learn to do a manual measurement. Its actually not that hard and is more accurate as your technique improves.

    • we had this compared against a Welch Allyn the day we bought it, and the Omron was within 2-3 mmHg of the Welch Allyn… that's close enough for me…

omron is not a "drug store" brand.

      • Maybe not, but I don't think that's the main point of the icekin's comment. I've always stuck with a stethoscope and recommend it as the cheapest possible accurate alternative.

    • Omron blood pressure monitors Pressure: +/- 3 mmHg or 2% of reading, Pulse: +/- 5% of reading. This meets or exceeds the AAMI (Assoc. for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) standards. They are also TGA approved and monitored.

As with all Automated blood pressure devices it is still recommended to take them with you when you visit your doctor. use the automated device first then have the doctor use a sphygmomanometer and stethoscope to confirm (not the other way round).

No bargain to be seen here…

    Newer model on Amazon, BP-760 $65.05 delivered;

    http://www.amazon.com/Omron-BP760-Series-Pressure-Monitor/dp…

This is only a midrange model, btw. 10 Series are the way to go with extra functionality, BP-785 $75.77 delivered.

    • I'm watching the BP-785 on camel3x. Pretty good features. Have complains about the cuff, but generally good reviews.
Waiting for it to dip below USD55 ex delivery. Lowest was 49.99 in March 2012.
