360

I used to use this as a hardware technician and highly recommend it. It's free and can help you determine the health of your hard drive.

From BitsDuJour:

Hard Disk Sentinel monitors and analyzes your hard disk, giving you feedback on drive health, any performance degradations, and warning of impending failure.

Features:

  • Monitor and analyze the performance and health of hard disks, SSDs, RAID arrays, and USB drives.
  • Guard against catastrophic loss of data by knowing when your hard drive is failing.
  • In an instant, know the temperature of your hard drive, disk transfer speed, and other important data.
  • Detect and repair issues before they get worse.
  • Choose from a wide variety of alerts and reports.

Well, that's a little harsh.. Have you even used this before?

I managed to get the pro version of this in a BitsDuJour promo and some other software freebies too, and considering the UI and straightforward nature of HDS, most people who would use it can understand enough of what's going on with their computer's hard drive to keep alert or inform their handy IT guy.

I'm not getting any referral for this either, so negging this just out of your judgement for being an "educated consumer" is a just a bit shallow for a ozbargainer..

The Hard Disk Sentinel website lists this software at $24.64 AUD. Did you find it cheaper elsewhere? Is there an issue with the software or developers? Free software is already banned from being listed.

Maybe you could contribute some actual bargains to the community as opposed to "educated" comments?

I have to agree with EPICSALETIME. You shouldn't be voting based on the poster (and your opinion of them), but based on the thing that is being posted (Have you used it?).

In this case it is the HDD monitoring software. I personally use the Professional version. Not sure what is lost in this Standard version, but I guess it may be better than nothing. I like the Professional version. Has all the stats and tests easily displayed for me to use, and their interpretation of the data. Eg. I have a Seagate internal drive at 55% health. It tells me what is wrong with it, what I should be looking for etc. A few other software (I haven't tried them all) simply chuck out a number at me and say its "OK". That's very limited information and I don't want to be bothered learning about what each data type means, though perhaps I should. HDD Sentinel gives me a one sentence description of what that data means. It then graphs it for me based on past results/info the program gleaned the last times it was run.

So overall, handy program. At least worth trying to see if you like it, out of the dozens of HDD monitoring programs out there. But as I said previously, the Standard edition is limited in features, I'm unsure of which. The official site should make a comparison table, that would have been nice. But Standard edition might have all the things you need, the key being the SMART analysis and monitoring.

Cool, thx for the link. Going by that if this was the pro version up for grabs I'd get it to try out since it has the functions I'd want including being portable. But since it's just the standard I'll give it a miss. Hopefully they will put the pro version up for grabs again some time =)

What does this software do that the countless other FREE HDD Diagnostic tools don't already do. Isn't this deal kind of redundant? Correct me if I'm wrong. If this software brings something new and novel to the table then I'll gladly give it my positive vote, but as another "educated consumer" as well as a new ozbargainer, I think I'm well within my rights to follow on from the last guy by warning people to not get sucked into a deal for software when an alternative can legally be obtained for free anyway. Again, correct me if I'm wrong.

Why don't you do the research about the positives and negatives of this program and link to some reviews? That would be what we call a constructive comment.

yeah fair call, I just don't have that much free time. In my limited experience with these tools you don't really need anything more than a freeware solution but the guy above my first comment has found a good feature list so that should help people, and he's pointed out some useful features so good on him. I don't have anything else bad to say about this deal. I mean hey, free is free :) as long as it doesn't pester me with ads and junk mail to upgrade to their pro version.

Sorry if it's a noob question, but does this software only detects the HDD problems, or does it detect and prevent damage to the sectors?

    • +1

Its a diagnostic tool, not a preventative tool..

MOD should update this deal to reflect that a Facebook like is required.

You can do a questionnaire instead. Tried looking into the iframe code on the facebook page to see whether I can extract a direct link, no go.

  • One of the best HDD monitoring apps in my opinion
