  • Isn't the new google device much better than this?

    • which one? would love a google android version of this.

I think Tile is the best Android based tracker out there https://www.tile.com/en-au

        • +3

Tried using Tile pre-covid. I hope they have improved since then because it was absolutely useless.

        • +1

Used tile and smarttag previously and especially withing Australia and NZ the SmartTag was miles better. Even in Europe the tile was improved but SmartTag was better. I still have a couple of tiles I use, mostly in some valuables that I want to find when I misplace them, but for travelling I only use SmartTag+ and SmartTag 2.

        • As long as you pay for subscription then yeah tile is good…. otherwise it's pretty much useless if you lose your tag out on the road and trying to find it.

        • I have both Tile and Smarttag2.
The smarttag consistently outperforms the Tile.

      • Theres a list here https://www.androidauthority.com/find-my-device-compatible-b…
The Google Find My Device feature is new so support currently limited and early adopter problems, so may want to sit out a bit longer yet.

Currently issues since Google are limiting where phones will report them and requiring two phones to see them. This helps reduce things like stalking someone, but also makes them not really work for tracking a bag to a house or remote warehouse corner.

But the huge advantage over the Tile and Samsung networks is that they are baking this into Android Play Services, so a billion Androids have enabled it by default unless users turn the setting off.
This is huge vs the Tile network only working if people install the app, and Samsung only working via Samsung phones

Tile is dead, until they become a minor player in the Google Find My Device maket.
Samsung tags, maybe will get an update to work with the Google network? Otherwise dead.

As far as I'm aware, the only Smart Tag that supports Google's Find My Device are:

      • chipolo says free shipping for order usd150 but then 4 packs is usd147 :(

        • Reminds me of mobile apps that want you to buy an item for 1600 gems but wouldn't you know it, the packs are only available in bundles of 250, 700, 1500 and 2000

And of course you can't afford anything with the leftovers.

      • There's also the MotoTag:
        https://www.motorola.com/us/moto-tag/p?skuId=1167
Not sure about Australian availability just yet though.

    • I think you mean the new Google Find My Device network. The tags are all 3rd party (Pebblebee, Chipolo, Moto) and the reviews for them have all been very poor. It seems like the hardware itself is probably fine, but choices Google has made with the design of the network have basically made it useless, or at least not as useful as the competing Samsung and Apple networks.
      https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1ehlr3n/find_my_de…

      • I think I read it's because Google added some dumb privacy setting by default where it doesn't update a tag's location until it gets pinged by multiple devices. You can change this setting on phones, not sure if it's configurable for these tags.

Also available directly from Amazon AU:

There's also cheaper options if you purchase from third party sellers.

Went to Europe, Turkey, Korea, Japan, Mongolia and Fiji with this Samsung tag.
Very useful when they sent our luggage to another terminal at Turkey.

    • Thank you

cheaper at officeworks as mentioned above
    also $35 at scorptec

  • 500-700 Days of battery life before needing to change batteries.

Already getting low battery warning on the ones i grabbed with my fold 6. 2 months…

    • Much better than the Smarttag+ that I was replacing seemingly every 1-3 months. But I highly doubt the chance of 500-700 days if you're actually going anywhere.
That said I just checked my Smarttag 2 and it has lasted since October and still says sufficient after lots of travel, pretty surprised about that.

Do these only work with samsung phones or all android?

  • Do you and others need to have Bluetooth enabled for it to ping the location?

    • At least one person with a Samsung phone must have Bluetooth on. It doesn't have to be your phone, but more features are available (direction, distance, AR) if you have your own Bluetooth on.

You need to be within 120m of the SmartTag, minus obstacles, for Bluetooth to connect. Outside of that range the location will be relayed to you from another phone that's within range.

    • They have to be Samsung phones with Bluetooth and Location enabled and the Smart Things app installed and enabled.
So they work much worse than the Apple which enables it on all Apple by default.

Google now have one enabling on most modern Android by default. However Google privacy and anti-stalking considerations have nerfed it to the point that they arent actually much use at tracking where your lost/stolen bag/bike/toolbox has gone, which is kind of the entire point of having a tag on it.

      • Yeah that sounds even worse than I thought. A lot of bs has to allign if you're trying to track the device remotely. I don't know about other people but I have Bluetooth disabled when I'm not using it and many people don't even know what Smart Things is.

        • Smartthings is a default install a lot of the time. And most people wouldnt turn Bluetooth off.
But still Samsung are only 25% of phones here vs iPhone at 60%.

          • @joelmuzz: Yet the Samsung beat the iPhone in real world tests.

  • Probably dumb question, but what do people attach this to, car keys and what else?

    • keys, luggage, tote bag, car itself, pets..

    • Keys are useful if mapping the button to something - I hear ppl map it to opening their garage, or finding their phone.

Can also attach to kids in their pocket zip or school bag. If they're young kids, you can also set your phone to alert you as soon as your kid wonders past the 120m Bluetooth range at a playground, tho that range drops if there are ppl or other obstacles between you and your child like at a busy shopping centre.
