It's been many years since I last 'read the newz'. Back then some isps ran mirrors and it was all quite simple. Based on googling, things seem to have become more complex since then. What is the best way to catch up and understand how to consume more current news? Guide recommendations?

    • It's now pretty much automated.
I use sabnzbd+ to retrieve binaries, sonarr automates searching 'indexers'- which index usenet and sends desired binaries to sabnzbd+

That should give you some search terms.

      • Xdcc send still a thing?

      • Do you need an indexer aswell? I normally torrent with sonarr but need something for hard to find/ old stuff

          Indexer and provider.

          NZBGeek or Drunkenslug are good.

          • @athk: usenet-crawler.com seems great free options too

not much human readable stuff these days, it's pretty much all moved to Reddit.

for extracting the binaries jump over to Reddit

Anthony Agius (whose newsletter is really good) has written a guide here. He's Australian-based, so it's written specific to Australia which helps a lot.

Blocks from Farm don't tend to make much sense to me, given their backbone does not have properly full retention for binaries, but do some sort of caching thing where more requested ones are prioritised for retention?

Which may seem (to some), counter to the point of a block account filling old or otherwise missing articles.

On the other hand, they're apparently the little guy fighting back against Omicron, who have been using the stereotype monopoly playbook where one purchases their competitors and then begins raising prices.

    • Plenty of services to fight back against the evil empire. Haven't been hearing awesome things about the Farm of recent times. Agency sub with a Thunder block gets all the fills i need. Demon is good too.

      Rule #1

    • Blocks from Farm don't tend to make much sense to me,

on paper I'd agree, but I'm just looking back thru my stats, I've got 7 other servers ahead of it in priority, yet it's easily #2 for downloads. although server 11 is Eweka and it's #3 for downloads.

      • What's #1 for you at the moment? I've been using Frugal this year to save some coin, and previously I was with Eweka. Been thinking about going with a provider with US West servers, but I'm not sure if it's going to be worth it.

        • Newsdemon but only because I got a cheap yearly sub last yr (iir $au40/yr) it's got EU & US servers there are some articles which were on one, not the other. I got 30mth Eweka for Dutch king's bday for $au121

Over the years I've picked up heaps of block accounts. quite a few from the same backbone so they're pointless, I'm trying to run them down, which is why Eweka is last.

          it's been pretty good.

          How much was/is your frugal?

For a US server I reckon try the NewsGroupDirect 1tb block when it's $us10 on their terabyte Tuesday. It's fairly reliable and it might last you years.

          • @M00Cow: I've had email offers for Eweka trying to get me back for €2.5 a month. I'll see what I can snag on black friday deals for newsdemon.

  • Fairly new to usenet and currently using Frugal. Does anyone recommend a second usenet subscription to compliment it?

here's the backbone map. find another on a different backbone.

I've used NewsgroupDirect for over a decade as my block account. Subscribe to their newsletter as every month they offer 1Tb blocks for $10 (which don't expire).

but also wait until Black Friday in 6 weeks as there's always great deals.

if not, pop over to Reddit to see current deals

  • Been using Newgroup Ninja for many years but I’ve noticed in the past 12 months their speeds have been very poor for me. I’m with ABB on their 1gig plan. FTTP, Ethernet wired downloading onto SSDs and last night I couldn’t top 10mb/s. Tried all sorts of permutations of connection numbers.

Can anyone on this provider provide their speeds?

  • I went with frugal 1yr for $50 with bonus Usenet farm 1.5TB/m access. I get good speeds with frugal.
