  • Do any other times than Feb to March get sales often? Feels like every sale is during that time

    • The dates go around the peak travel dates so they can charge more like I leave on 26th March & paying double this price because I need to catch a cruise from Japan on the 29th they manipulate all the dates for maximum profit .

      • yeah its so sucky when they inflate the price over peak periods :(

now i got a small family, i have to travel during school holidays which is more exy than outside of it. in saying that im going to lean to take the kids out of primary school if i find a bargain lol not like its the end of the world

        • +3

i usually take the kid out of school a week before term ends to take advantage of the cheaper fares. they don't do much anyway final week of term.

          • @Heybargain: of any of the terms?

i actually would like to go to japan in feb for the snows with the family as its a great time to go because (1) cheaper flights and (2) snow is generally great.

although i dont know how the school will react with me taking kids out after 2 weeks when they've just started school lol
thoughts? i have my 5 year old starting next year kindy

            • @prankster: yeah, any term. though we've usually headed out and planned flights out just before easter long weekend to take advantage of public holidays too.

not sure which state you're in but considering yours is starting kindy next year I would probably wait until the following year if you really want to go at that time.

we've got a trip booked for Japan coming up, flying out the last week of term 4 this year. we'll be flying up to Hokkaido, will be plenty of snow at that time.

keep in mind with those peak times book in advance to give you best chance of flights. flight availability is generally available up to a year in advance. not the cheapest but unfortunately being a parent those are usually the only times you can travel without taking much time out of school.

      • That's also right before holidays there, the main part of cherry blossom season, and the F1. Couldn't pick a worse time to front run on something unrelated.

  • Thanks OP, perfect dates for when I was planning my next trip over.

Could be worth noting that (of the dates I've looked at ex-Melb) the MEL direct flights are into Narita which will be less desirable.

    • +2

Do people not like Narita just because it's further from Tokyo? I've flown into both airports and aside from Narita Terminal 3 being kind of basic (it's the main terminal for budget carriers like Jetstar), I've found Narita pretty good.

The skyliner also gets you to Ueno in about 40 minutes which is acceptable to me, but maybe people don't like the longer travel time into central Tokyo?

      • +1

just have to account for additional time for the train from narita into tokyo city which i think is a 40 min train ride?

      • +1

Yeah, pretty much. Getting from there to actual Tokyo is pretty expensive and time-consuming because Narita is in the middle of paddocks and rice fields.
I've been to both, too, and I much prefer Haneda. However, I tend to rent cars when I go, so taking local trains and/or taxis from Narita isn't a concern.

        • +1

Cost is about $30 and for memory 3 stops, took about 40 minutes and was very enjoyable.

          • @BatmanAU: There are train options starting at 1170 JPY (= ~12 AUD), but apparently not if you arrive late at night, last one today was at 7:06pm.

Tap the public transport options to see them, takes about 90 minutes (versus about 60 minutes for the $30 option). If you're looking late at night, select 7pm leaving time:
            https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Terminal+1,+Narita,+Chiba,+J…

For comparison, the train from Haneda airport takes about 45 minutes to Tokyo station, and prices start at 510 JPY.

      • +1

Yeah Narita was pretty good tbh, train was enjoyable. I haven't been to Haneda so can't comment on that.

      • +1

This - Skyliner to Ueno. Plenty of hotels in that area, cool cheap eats, close to the centre of Tokyo on the subway, Shinkansen station.

  • +1

any relatively cheap flights to Japan during the xmas and new year period (return in mid Jan) recommended?

    • Also looking!

    • +1

Very few/none. Your best bet might be via one of the Chinese airlines or perhaps via the Philippines. You wont get a cheap direct flight; will be $2k+

    • We are going in Dec school holidays and even that was hard to obtain!!

      • whats your experience of trying to get a good deal for dec school holidays?

my understanding is just book in advance because there will never be a sale for peak periods

      • i found the cheapest one is with China Eastern, but have to stop over at Nanjing or Shanghai. Nanjing is a city with a long history, while Shanghai is one of the most developed megacities in the world! The flight costs less than $1400 pp return, but the issue is we dont know how to extend the stay in either city, because the cheap price is not available on China Eastern website but through third party online brokers…

  • I'm looking for sale prices anywhere around Asia in November and looks like I've missed all the sales.

  • +6

BE WARY - For the Melbourne to Tokyo flights, they're all June-August period, its summer in Japan, so it is hot and humid, most people think its the worst period to visit…unless you like that kind of weather :S

    • +2

      100 percent

    • Actually if you go to the site with one of the Sydney flight links earlier in the year, then change to MEL, you'll see cheap flights from MEL too.

  • -1

Premium prices to fly into Narita is a joke, I don't care if it's JAL or not

  • -1

No April sales. Not happy. I want to see cherry blossoms.

  • +2

I wish Japan Airlines did direct from Brisbane. We only get Jetstar or Qantas :(

    • +2

qantas is such a rip for their Japan flights - even jetstar is, given their track record

    • +1

Also, the flights listed from Brisbane seem to have an overnight stopover in Singapore, so you'll be paying for a hotel in addition to the airfare. Better to use that accommodation money to buy a ticket to Sydney and fly direct from there, BNE-SYD one-way is showing $74 (Jetstar) or $108 (Virgin) for the period concerned.

    • +1

      Or even ANA

  • +1

Looks like we're on the list for free domestic transfer, which makes this an incredible deal if you plan to spend time in Hokkaido during their summer:

  • Perfect, was waiting for a deal to go around Feb/Mar during low season when accommodation will be a bit cheaper. Booked the 24 Feb to 13 Mar at these bargain prices. Ended up going with ANA for $1038 because I couldn't really find this elusive $933 flight from Syd to Tokyo.

    • It was about 988 via the Japan Airlines website… unless its gone now?

  • damn was looking for something during the easter break and it seems all the airlines have jacked the prices up around that period

    • Normal. It’s Easter, public and school holidays.
