Is there anyone else still using THE iPhone 12 mini

    • Been using mine from Amaysim since last deal. Battery health at 90%. Battery can last a full day because I only use it 1 hour per day.

      • +9

I only use it 1 hour per day.

You only check ozbargain 1 hr per day??

    • +2

Yes, just had the battery replaced. Great size. 3 years old now

      • Does it still perform well? Is it glitchy?

        • +1

Works fine. Fast enough. Use for Reddit, Whatsapp, Signal, Messages, Email and calls. Battery has always been average, but if you don't waste hours on the socials it is fine for the day. Most of my calls are VC on laptop.

      • +1

Where did you get the battery from? Did you replace it yourself? How much did it cost?

        • Can get it replaced for around 100-150 i think

        • Only get batteries replace by Apple. Don’t trust some random with some crappy knock off battery.

          Apple chargers a reasonable price.

          • +2

@PainToad: Apple charges $149. Third party shops can charge anywhere from $50 to $100. Depends what you consider reasonable.

            • +1

@ak47wong: Well, considering a shit cheap battery:
              1) Randomly not having charge could mean you can’t make calls in an emergency.
              2) Could be a fire hazard putting your house and family at risk.

              I think $149 is reasonable.

              • @PainToad: not to mention how dodgy the water sealing is on 3rd party replacements, moisture gets in after time and breaks everything

    • +3

Im still using 1st gen of SE battery was replaced yrs ago. I prefer small phone and have no prob charging it also have external battery that i carry. The best phone is what ticks all what one needs.

    • Been using the 256gb one I got from the Amaysim deal all day, everyday. Battery health down to 96%. Been perfect phone.

    • +1

My wife and I both use an 8. Performance is fine, as long as you go and close tabs and programs every now and then. Could do with battery replacement though. Before that I was on the two year flagship upgrade journey. I think I got old, cos these days I really dgaf about any of the flashier phone specs like I used to.

    • I've never met anyone irl using a mini, only on OzBargain and Reddit 😅

    • Haha I was but upgraded to the 16 Pro using the JB deal when it launched. Battery health on 87%, no idea how some other people are still on the high 90s. Then again I do use my phone a lot.

It never ceases to amaze me that I could sell it today and probably breakeven on what I paid for it.

  • Yes the kids are from the last deal from Amaysim

    • +3

You got kids from an Amaysim deal? I didn't know Amaysim had kids :O

  • Does the iPhone 12 mini still hold up today?

Im thinking of getting an iPhone for my elderly mother. She is currently using my old Galaxy S7 which wmt work once 3G is cut.

    • +1

Yep, still my daily driver. Wife has one too, but she wants a better camera now so guess it will be the 16

      • If camera is the priority, I'd recommend a Pro / Pro Max model.

    • Please check here (https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/check-imei) before you buy. If the phone was manufactured for a market other than Australia, it may not work!

  • +4

i think for both Apple and Android that the phones are not getting 'much' better but the prices seem to be going up if not saying the 'same'

i wonder how long until we see a large drop in price

    • +1

I think only way to get phone at a better price is to buy it at the time of deals. The best deals for Samsung phones are around the launch (Feb I think) or when JB Hi-Fi has deals clubbed with their phone plans but it is changing every year (eg. $69/month plan for 12 months is no longer available). Some people have been lucky to get phones at almost half the listed price by cancelling the plans, paying the fees (subject to CIS), sometimes JB Hi-Fi offers coupons deals (eg. S24U $1700 off on 24 month plan etc) and/or trade in bonuses. At other times, gift card deals with 10/15% off can bring price down a bit. Apple deals on other hand are very limited. Costco drops their price once in a while & Officeworks might price beat it. Harvey Norman had a deal where they offered gift card on purchase above $300.

    • Iphone 11 has 4g coverage and the iPhone 12 has 4g and 5g coverage so one would hope they would still work.

From what I have found out Apple IPhones from US and some other place which I cannot remember do not have band 28 in there modem which means they will NOT be compatible with the 3G shut down. So buyer beware. Do your research before you buy. Here in Australia Boost Mobile has been selling US grey import IPhones which will not work after the 3G shut down.

        • I asked

          Hello,
Can you please confirm that the 12 mini offered at https://refurbished.amaysim.com.au/sku/11901318870?VAR_Condi… is guaranteed to support the LTE frequency band B28 (700 MHz) used by telstra and optus in Australia?

They responded obliquely but I'll take it as a yes, these all provide b28.

          to me
          Hi,
Thank you for your email, all devices sold on the amaysim refurbished site are compliant with all Australian networks.
          Warm Regards

        • I agree with you. Please check here (https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/check-imei) before you buy. Phones made for the US market and sold in the US will not look any different to the ones sold as new in Australia but do not support all the bands.

According to Telstra, phones manufactured for the US market can not connect to the mobile network's main 4G frequency (B28/700MHz), so you might have limited/patchy coverage from 28 October 2024, including for Emergency 000 calls. For more reliable coverage after the closure, upgrade to a compatible device.

    • Optus website says the iPhone 11 supports VoLTE
      https://devicehelp.optus.com.au/apple/iphone-11-ios-14-1/

This suggests it may still have issues

      • Its not just Volte which is the issue with the 3G shut down. It is also E000 Emergency calling, some 4G & 5G phones will be blocked after the 3G shut down as they will not be able to do E000 Emergency calling on all the major networks i.e. Telstra, Optus, Vodafone. These phones will end up as bricks.

iPhones haven’t been 3G-dependent for 10 years (the last 3G-only model was the 5s released in 2013)

    • sort of, but not really, the US and China models do not have band 28 for Australia.

      • Correct see my comment above

This was almost 2 years ago, lol

      • +9

I was expecting the price to drop after 20 months, but it's actually going in the opposite direction, lol

  • I think the real deal is for the 11 or 12 and budgeting in a battery replacemnt from Apple.
For the price of 13 and battery replacement….i would wait for SE4 which i think would be $800

  • +2

Please be careful when you buy. If the phone you buy was manufactured for a market outside Australia, it will not work completely after 3G switch off. I bought a second hand iPhone 11 Pro from Reebelo and it was made for the US market (I did not know this till I became aware of the 3G issue).

This is the message I get when I last used 3G check. One way to check is at https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/check-imei.

This phone can not connect to the mobile network's main 4G frequency (B28/700MHz), so you might have limited/patchy coverage from 28 October 2024, including for Emergency 000 calls. For more reliable coverage after the closure, upgrade to a compatible device.

  • I think I can afford a battery replacement and phone cover. Not sure if I can afford the phone to go with it… ;-)
