  • +3

I've always wondered how you bog in an underground mine.

  • +4

This has about as much credibility as my thai $45 padi certificate

    • +1

Sorry but the deal is real. Why are we doing this? Because the Hardrock underground mining industry needs people that know how a mine works, this free course leads into our full correspondence course that includes our Job ready placement program.

      • This could be a real deal… One question:

Do your certificates list Nationally Accredited (in AU) training modules?

Perhaps your can list the modules by their National Accreditation number for us, so we can see how they compare to ones requested by employers & contractors in Australia…?

        TIA

        • Because this is only a new course at this stage it is only industry reconised. The reason that we have done these courses is because there is no nationally accredited training for hardrock mines and the industry needs new people that know how a mine works and the entry level jobs that you are going to be required to do.

        • Well, whether or not an employer buys-into it, it can't hurt to take such a course, eg, before a first
          face-to-face MARCSTA-course (for WA), so, I'd say it's a deal.

Oh, is there any take-away study / review / summary guide (eg, downloadable PDF file)?

THAT would add value to an online course…

        • .

        • -2

Iron and coal exports have slowed due to decreased demand and over supply, in the hunter valley alone close to 1000 jobs have been axed, along with numerous projects out on the back burner. WA and QLD are in similar boats. The level of growth was never sustainable.

        • Hmm but aren't most of the jobs that have been axed from workers that actually work in the productive side of mining? like truck drivers and riggers and such…I'm not sure if geologists are related in that regard but I guess if jobs are getting axed, then it could be tertiary jobs as well…=(

More reason to stick to Ozbargain to live frugally I guess…sigh

        • +1

This statement you have made about WA is just not true.

        • +1

The MARCSTA has had its day. The only companies that I know of that still require it are the big iron ore companies like BHP and Rio for their construction and shut down workers.

        • Considering MARCSTA is a legal requirement in WA you are incorrect.

        • -2

The problem is that grad spots tend to be pretty fierce in regards to competition, plenty of sites are after geo's with exp not so much cleanskins. At the couple of sites I work for the positions axed were subbies and office, but most of them were redeployed. It varies too much to give you an accurate answer.

Don't expect the huge money to be there forever, sooner or later the bubble will burst.

        • -5

IVI ill ask a mate in HR tomorrow whether or not they recognize non accreditated courses, I'm banking it's a resounding no.

        • +1

I'm sorry but you really need to check your facts as you have just shown anyone involved with the industry how little you know. MARCSTA is NOT a legal requirement in WA it was started by the mining companies in 1996. It has gone from a 5 day course to a 4 hour course. If the employer wants you to have it they will pay for it but none of our students that have gotten jobs has needed it.

        • +2

You can ask your HR mate all you want and it won't make any difference, you are talking about coal and this is NOT a coal mining course so unless your mate has 80 years hardrock mining experience like the 3 ticketed shiftboss we have on staff then I reckon you going to get told that you have to do the coal board course in NSW to get a job in the hunter but what about out in Cobar because we have had several students get jobs their just because of the full course they did.

        • what the hell has that got to do with the deal?

        • +2

OP: just ignore Copie, he's the resident troll around here. Knows nothing but spouts rubbish on most topics.

        • +1

That's Chilled, your right about him being a troll. The information that he is giving out is not correct and I see his HR mate must of set him straight.

    • -2

Pretty much, any mine will laugh at you for doing something like this.

And with the mining sector slowing, non tert jobs are drying up. It's pretty simple on how to get into the mines eg:

A: Hold a HR or above license + experience for min 3 years
      B: know someone
      C: be a geo tech.

Source: I do a bit of work for Ricks Creek/Mt Arthur/Foley.

It's company's such as the OP is why it's such a clusterruck to even get into the industry.

Forgot to mention, every site is different for inductions, adding further evidence to your load of rubbish your trying to peddle.

      • +1

Another arm chair expert that does some work in the mines, what work do you do because we are ticketed WA shift bosses. This is not an induction it really does teach you how a hard rock mine works. Why don't you do the course before making a statement like this.

        • -1

Driving, loader and some rigging work. Why would I need to do a course for? You don't even offer the GSI, nor have you provided an accreditation number.

Truth be told you don't offer any of the work cover courses for skidsteer, crane, rigging or white card.

Your no different to any other website offering 'get work in mines for cash dollars'

        • +1

This is how clueless you are about the mining industry, your talking about coal. This is a course for Hardrock mining and for anyone reading this all those jobs you are talking about are suport roles, courses for skidsteer, crane, rigging or white card are for jobs building mines. Thats a nice truck in your picture so i am thinking that all you do is drive out to a coal mine to drop things off. You really shouldn't commont on what you have no idea about. This is a real course that teachs you about Hardrock mining not coal mining and for your information it is only coal that is going through a down turn at the momment just have a look at seek for all the hardrock mining jobs.

        • He's got one point there… online or face-to-face… these days a Australian trainer needs to be an "RTO" =

          • Registered Training Organisation

I think he's asking for your RTO number…

        • -1

An no, I split my time between sites, that photo is an old photo.

Once again I ask you to provide your accreditation number and work cover accreditation number.

And is shows you that you are a sham, rigging and skidsteer are both qualifications are used in every single operating site in Australia.

        • Good to hear about Coal dying…

Folks in the know looking -far- beyond the present) are expecting THORIUM to take the place of Uranium in the future.

Safer nuclear power plants (than, eg, fast breeder ones, like Fukushima, in Japan) -will- be "LFTRs" =

          • Liquid Fluoride THORIUM Reactors

For a quick intro to Thorium & LFTR's, see:

There's a reason BHP Billiton decided -not- to expand its Roxby Downs -uranium- mine, & I'd say it's the -quick- pace of -growth- in interest in Thorium & LFTRs.

          For details, -search- YouTube.com for:

          • "Thorium Remix"

Hey, we need -some- nukes to power our (coming) 100% Electric Vehicles… Coal is useless… IMO.

        • +1

You don't have to be an RTO if you are industry reconised. What does industry reconised mean? It means that the companies in this area have looked at the course and decided to hire people that have done our full course. There is nothing else like this in Australia and please don't let the RTO's rip you of with the S11 mining course as this is only for coal and only applies in QLD. Just call any mine in WA, NT or SA and see what they say when you tell them you have done your S11, this is when they will laugh at you.

        • -1

If you rang any site direct they will point you to either their head office or to recruitment companies.

        • +1

So what do you do on the mine because as said before I am a ticketed WA shift boss (you need to look it up) and I'm telling you here and now that you don't need either of those things to be a Hardrock miner, you may well need then for coal but like I said before the coal industry is going through a down turn and the only place they are taking on entry level people is in hardrock mines.

        • +1

Olympic dam is not on hold the underground is still going strong they only postponed the open cut. The state goverement has given them a time extenion on the surface side of the progect.

        • +1

As a second year Geologist, on track to graduating next year, I was wondering if the stories about the slowing industry true? if so, to what extent?
I understand that the mining industry goes through cycles where it slows down periodically before growing again but I was wondering how the job prospects are looking for geologists? is there a shortage or are they not as needed as before?
          cheers!
          (sorry I asked this above)

        • +1

Make sure you go into the hardrock side of things and you will be right, have a look at seek and type in Hardrock miner underground and lots of geo jobs come up

      • Pretty much, any mine will laugh at you for doing something like this.

Are you telling us that it's not worth the money they are asking?

        • If you are talking about the S11 Andy then yes it is a waste of your time and money unless you have a job lined up in a QLD coal mine.

        • no…. was asking Copie if he/she felt this was not worth the money you are asking for this course….

        • -1

Not worth it at all no. If your dead serious about working in mining your best off starting by jumping one of the couple of mining forums and having a good read of what others are saying about working in the industry. Next is work out what tickets you require (front loader, skid and excavator are a good start) then start by talking to recruiters for anything on site that you can get your hands on, once you have 12 months on site you can pretty much write your own ticket then.

        • +1

Not worth it at all no

          So it's not worth free??
          wow…

        • -1

Well, like all other of these 'courses' they will offer must have courses to which they then rail you from your hard earned. They are offering g 9-12 hours for 99 bucks, if the course was an actual relevant training course your looking at significantly more cost wise.

        • +1

So it's free and not worth the money? Andy if you follow Copie advice you will still be looking for a job in 2 years time. This is the problem everyone is an arm chair expert with no real mining experience. All I can say is do the course and make up your own mind.

        • What do you do on your mines Copie because it sounds like you are a want to be not a miner.

        • -1

Well if your a cleanskin with no relevant trade or experience its always going to be difficult to break into the industry, even with this so called course. And with all of the resource sector slowing down this is even more evident.

End of the day you won't have it handed to you via a silver platter, not without connections or experience at least.

And so called companies such as yourself give people the impression that everything is all laid out nice and neat and they can just waltz in with no trades and earn huge money, which simply is not the case.

        • Again the down turn is only in coal, we have just posted entry level truck drivers roles on our facebook page for barrick. What do you do at the mines you work at? Are you a worker or a squeezer?

        • -3

Ah no, iron is down as well due to over supply, gold, gas, uranium are still pretty strong.

        • So what do you do on site Copie?

  • +5

Damn, I thought this was going to be a Minecraft tut

      • +1

wow for a sec I thought you said your shaft.

  • I have a masters in civil engineering and 5 years post grad experience in design and construction of hard rock and soft ground shaft sinking and tunneling on civil projects. Is it worth doing this course?

    • It's up to you it doesn't cost anything only your time.

  • There's a 14 min YouTube video on a larger minging "village" in WA:

(Search YouTube for: "The life on a mining village in Western Australia"
I think it's made by a Swiss or Austrian guy, working there & travelling)

    The food looks terrific! :-)

(Which one? Anyone recognise it, from the video?)

    • Is the village full of mingas?

  • So how do i apply the code? I only see paypal..
And BTW seriously stop fighting the lot of you.
If you make good money, or help people make good money then stop talking rubbish and get me and the thousands of Ozbargainers jobs so I can afford to buy New Deals that are posted every 5mins on this site.
Ps this Course seems like it'll go nowhere fast but hey i'm unemployed, bord and need a freebie that will last 12hrs longer than my free undies I got today from Ozsale.
